We sit with Paul’s words in Romans 8:5-6 and follow his insistence that there are two kinds of people: those “after the flesh” and those “after the Spirit.” Not two moods. Not a believer toggling between settings. Two realms, two masters, two orientations of the mind that show up in what we love, what we pursue, and what we call normal. We trace how this “two classes” theme runs across the whole Bible, from Genesis onward, and why Scripture keeps using paired contrasts like life and death, light and darkness, sheep and goats, wheat and tares. That isn’t meant to feed pride; it’s meant to clarify what regeneration actually means. If the Spirit gives new birth, the change isn’t cosmetic. It’s internal, deep-seated, and revealed in the governing direction of the mind. Then we slow down over Romans 8:6: “to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” We ask the blunt question the text forces: can someone be dead and alive at the same time?
