To Be, Carnally or Spiritually Minded (Romans 8:5-11), parts 4/4

We take the text seriously: without faith it’s impossible to please God, and without the Holy Spirit it’s impossible to please God. That forces a better question than “How strong is my will?” What does God actually promise to do for the people he saves, and how do we know we belong to Christ? We walk through Romans 8:9–11 and camp out on the phrase “Spirit of Christ.” If the Spirit is present, we’re Christ’s. If the Spirit is absent, we’re not. From there, we deal head-on with oneness theology by tracking how Scripture speaks of the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, and Christ himself. We also use John 14 to show why Jesus says he must go so the Holy Spirit can come and testify to him, and why the Bible’s theme of true witnesses makes far more sense in Trinitarian Christianity than in a one-person model of God. Then we bring it home to the hope every believer needs: the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us as a deposit and guarantee. That means the fight against sin isn’t pointless, shame doesn’t get the last word, and even death has an expiration date.
