To Disney or not to Disney, I know is a question many people have struggled over. Here's what I think. The perspective from which you enter into any event or experience makes a difference in what you come away with. Not going to Disneyland in and of itself is not critical literacy. The critical piece comes through being able to unpack the hidden ideologies that stem from the world of Disney and therefore not buying into those ideologies. The critical also comes through understanding the position from which you enter into readings of Disney and so forth. It comes from the recognition that the language you encounter is not natural or neutral and that it does particular life work. Disney background noise: Andy : ldquo; Did you hear that? Vivian :ldquo; What ? Andy :ldquo; That woman over there with her daughter dressed as Cinderella just said "Will you hurry up! you're not being very princess-like" Now see what is problematic about what Andy overheard while we were in Disneyland, is the way the woman, caregiver, mother, positioned Disney as an authority on life or the way things should be. Specifically the way girls should be. Disney of course cuts up the world in a particular way. I doubt, however, if staying away from Disneyland would have disrupted that mother's problematic representation of what it means to be a girl. So the issue at hand goes beyond to Disney or not to Disney. What do you think? What are some things we can do in schools and at home to disrupt dominant sexist ideologies and discursive practices?
