To Fulfill All Righteousness
from Between Bread and Stone Hosted by Stephen R. Brewer, PsyD
This week’s moral question is simple and brutal: what does righteousness mean when a nation that baptizes itself as Christian trains armed agents to kill with impunity, then tells the public to trust their judgment? We hold Jesus’ baptism in one hand and the recent shootings in Minneapolis and Portland in the other, and we refuse to pretend they belong to different moral universes. This reflection invites you into the river. We trace the imperial inversion of baptism from a public act of repentance and solidarity into a badge of separation, then follow the Moses, Jesus, and Elian arcs as they name the false gods at work in our enforcement culture. If you are disillusioned with church and politics, or wondering how faith can be anything but hypocrisy in a season like this, you are welcome here.
