Do you desire for your life to count for something great? Do you want your life to have eternal significance? You should. This is God’s design and desire for his people. We have been created to have a singular, all-embracing, all-satisfying passion for our lives: Jesus Christ. The unifying theme of our living (in both the significant and mundane) and dying (however God chooses it to come) should be found in knowing Him and making Him known. As we read from Paul writing from prison, he is facing unjust suffering, relational opposition and the possibility of death. Yet we see that his concern is not on his comfort, critics or even the looming life-or-death decision of his judicial sentence. Instead, he only wants to be sure he remains faithful to Jesus, desiring to be a witness to His worth and an instrument for the greater progress of His gospel for the faith & joy of all people. Whatever happens, he wants to be a showcase for Jesus. Like a racehorse whose blinders keep them focused toward the prize, Paul’s passion was singular. If he lived, he would live for Jesus. If he died, he would be with Jesus. No matter his circumstance, he wants to honor the Lord & let the world know that Jesus is wonderful. For Paul, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” So should it be with us.
