Em tempos diferentes daqueles de um passado longínquo, em que a abertura do Cerrado era barata e incentivada para colonizar o interior brasileiro, agricultores capitalizados por uma safra recorde e bons preços estão terminando suas colheitas e já se preparam para um salto de plantio no futuro. A história da abertura de fronteira agrícola, no entanto, acontece com um novo enredo: o avanço em novas áreas é possível, mas os personagens já precisam de recursos relevantes para dar conta do investimento. Produtores de grãos continuam chegando ao Tocantins de várias partes do país, numa aposta nas grandes áreas de pastagens disponíveis, elemento fundamental para a conversão de terras praticamente ociosas em agricultura lucrativa. Com chuvas volumosas, permissão para explorar 65 por cento da terra (o restante é reserva ambiental) e um terminal ferroviário à disposição perto da capital Palmas, os produtores estão rindo à toa em ano de produção abundante e preços altos. Ainda que tenha havido valorização da terra, o Tocantins conta com propriedades ainda relativamente baratas perto de outras regiões do Brasil, até pelo fato de deter grandes áreas de pastagens, fruto de desmatamento no passado, que estão sendo utilizadas para agricultura.
