本书讲述的是一对父子之间的冲突。父亲是清朝的康熙皇帝，他1661~1722年在位，儿子是他的太子——胤礽，这一冲突即为继承皇位而发生的凶残的权力斗争。在清朝统治的初期，个人的历史与更宏大的王朝历史以及康熙宫廷历史交织在一起。笔者把这一对父子间的悲剧视为满洲人占领中原之后相关事件的转折点；这一对父子之间权力斗争的政治运作和文化环境就是上演此悲剧的舞台。
