Tools Are Not Wisdom

from Be A Funky Teacher Podcast

Episode SummaryIn this episode, I talk about something that I think is really important right now—tools are not the same as wisdom. We are surrounded by tools that can generate answers quickly, but that speed can create the illusion that understanding is happening when it really isn’t.I’ve been thinking a lot about how access to information is not the same as learning. Students can produce work that looks polished, but without thinking, reflection, and struggle, the depth just isn’t there. That’s a shift we have to pay attention to.I also get into the idea that real learning takes time. It takes effort, mistakes, and working through confusion. Wisdom is built over time, not generated instantly, and that’s something we can’t lose in the middle of all this.At the end of the day, tools can support learning, but they should never replace thinking. Our role is to protect that thinking, to slow things down when needed, and to make sure students are actually learning—not just producing.Show NotesTools vs. wisdom in educationThe difference between answers and understandingWhy access does not equal learningThe importance of productive struggleThinking vs. producingProtecting depth in a fast-paced worldKey TakeawaysTools can generate answers but not wisdomAccess to information is not the same as learningSpeed can hide shallow thinkingStruggle is an important part of learningThinking matters more than producing
