After all, what's not to like about vast regions of sand, blazing heat and an abundance of wildlife both above and below the surface.  What she discovered shortly into the list is something a bit more intriguing, and says a LOT about how we see ourselves and how the rest of the world views us. The list included deserts in North, Central and South America, not just within in the borders of the US, and that was kind of troubling for both Elizabeth and Michael. As Americans, we tend to use the name "America" synonymously with the legal name of our own country, (The United States of America) and we DON'T view countries outside of the US borders (on either continent) as "America" even though BOTH continents were named for Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. And... people who live elsewhere on the American continents certainly are not "Americans."   It's just the way we view ourselves and others.  We are protective of the "America" and we've taken ownership of the name.
