Torn About Today's Protest and a Personal Family Tragedy
from The Renegade Writer's Mouthy Musings · host The Mouthy Renegade Writer
I’m having a hard morning. I’m really struggling right now. This blows. On the day of the biggest protest in American history, I’m having a hell of a time. More people will take to the streets today to protest a wannabe fascist dictator than another other in our nation’s history. I had my plans all set to be there to participate in it.Then my father fell this morning. He’s in the hospital. And I’m torn between rushing there immediately, or attending the protest and swinging by after. He didn’t break any bones. He’s just weak from having cancer. And my mother is struggling to care for him in their home. She has her own health issues that make things difficult to handle his needs. Something has to change.Mai has graciously offered to pick her up and take her to the hospital once there is news to report. And speaking of reporting news, I really want to be a part of this No Kings Protest. My journalism is one of the very most important things to me.But is it more important than family? Even on a historic day like today? I’m not so sure.I pride myself on doing the right things in life. I want to set an example for my own children. Someday, I could be in the same position and hope that they would drop what they’re doing in my time of need. But is sitting in a hospital for hours, waiting for answers my highest and best use, as a human being?Do I show up to fight for our country’s freedom, or comfort my father? I talk about this in today’s podcast episode. Whatever I end up deciding, something won’t feel right.I hope I make the right choice. Being a few hours late to the hospital shouldn’t make me feel like the worst person on the planet. But right now, it sure feels that way.If you enjoy my daily podcast episodes, please consider a monthly tip.
