I've seen things you people wouldn't believe Blade Runner and now total recall welcome to dick me our retrospective on the filmic adaptations of the work of sci-fi author of some repute Philip K dick Dan here Am I Dan or am I a different guy who looks exactly like me or the same guy, but not What's it? What's his other name is a Huberman? How's her not? He was not dr.
Huberman dr. The horny doctor. Who's the horny? Who's that?
Yeah, you know, you know, he was born. We talked about he's like a he's like a pop pop scientist who has like a I know like a guy we've done about this fucking yeah type of guy who talks about like neuro elasticity But he got in trouble for having too many girlfriends at once. How many did he have a lot? He was going to like insane lengths to have as many girlfriends as possible.
I mean, you know the the the Mormons They get up to you know having a lot of girlfriends I know sure some real cats also who have their their stable of girlfriends But I've never heard of the law having to get involved because too many girlfriends Oh, well, he didn't get it wasn't a legal issue It was it was more just like someone wrote about an article and his and his many girlfriends All of this obviously like it's very cultish these these snake oil salesmen your what's his name Andrew Andrew Huberman I don't know I just call him. Yeah, he's like I mean, but that is like in every single cult every like documentary every like Article that you read anything it usually just boils down to this guy want to fuck everyone He just wanted yeah, you want more girlfriends what how can I get it's how it's a root goldberg scheme? Yeah, I mean cultivate match. It's it's a bit of a like a ponzi scheme of sorts You're you're casting out a wide net you're you're trying to scoop up as many girlfriends as you can and then those girls bring in more girls Well, here's the thing with human that sets him apart.
Yeah, none of his girlfriends knew about each other I mean they were all secret. I mean this guy seems like he also has probably has a guy or an assistant with him that with a backpack full of Cell phones that he just has you know, like just doesn't even doesn't even fuck with like I don't want to mistakenly text somebody just like Everybody gets a different cell phone That's there's a there's a funny anecdote in this article where he he talks about like there's like some guy right some guy He was like briefly friends with being like yeah Go over there be on his phone the whole time and one time he was like I have to leave can you watch my dog? And it's like sure man, I guess any left for like a week Like a day or two because you have to go be someone's boyfriend in a different state Now how's that easy? It's obviously not and that it's not but it's you know, it's like we don't choose our our passions What drives us a humor man more like a hubris man?
Right get out of here with this guy. Yes. Yes, it's a little harsh, but yes That but we're talking about a different guy with a really big man today Arguably a bigger neck we're talking about total recall sure of girlfriend 1990. Sure Would you be my girlfriend?
Can you make this official At the top of affairs wheel while there like a bunch of guys were like I like the first wheel from fall I like like you. Will you be my girlfriend? Yeah, who was his shorts and yours wife is it's a Marie Shriver? Yeah, that's correct.
That's my It's my girlfriend We're gonna keep it. We're gonna keep that behavior to a minimum. I think as much that we should I mean We should we should really try there's plenty to talk about without resulting very resorting to a crass You know sort of retelling of his life Caricatures of awesome. Oh sure that's fine.
Yeah, I got it fine fine fine We're gonna be respectful of other Cultures Martian culture chief of knowledge total recall 1990 based on the Philip K. Dick short story we can remember it for you wholesale Rob would you believe I read this I would believe that it's not very long. It's a short stories, right? It's one of those short stories.
Oh, it's crazy how much they managed to fit into such a short story It's very true to the film, you know just sort of in like the you know the plot points for the bigger part points, right? Um, yeah Yeah, it's sort of like the whole Martian adventure doesn't come to pass but like the setup and like the point of the story is exactly the same Where it's like yeah? It's it's very like whoa, it's all real or is it you know the only difference is they I mean not really difference But this story ends with them trying to implant a second set of memories in him to cover up his secret agent memories Those also turn out to be so they can't win with it. I got two memories He's seen things you people wouldn't believe frankly so That's all we'll say about that.
It's fine book. Yeah, yeah I am noticing a trend over these two Philip K. Dick things that I've read This man really is not keen on women. He's like the anti-huberman He wants his he seemingly wants as few girlfriends as possible because he think all like both this story and the The other one do Android stream of electric sheet the wives are just like I want stuff.
I want you to bend the knee I want this I'm a shrew So that's interesting. Yeah, would you believe that Philip K. Dick had five wives in his time? He was a bit of a collector of girlfriends as well.
Yeah, I'll say let's see I mean imagine imagine it's you know comes home. He's like hey, I got a short story published You want to read it and like it's about a man in his life They say right what you know dear his first it looks like his first marriage didn't even last the year married and divorced in No, look at this guy just put it around this man Well Yeah, I wouldn't that's not surprising to me that this like He seems like one of those guys from that like I don't know a lot about him Right from what I understand like a scanner darkly minus a sci-fi aspects or whatever but like the sort of druggy Hippie den beat Nick den that was sort of like his vibe and you know, he's a sci-fi writer and like the whatever 50s It just seems like a guy who's you know, he's on his own He's in his own head a lot and that doesn't make for a great spouse as you know the five wives could probably attest to Yeah, yeah Yeah, I think I think being a sci-fi tour in this era on top of everything like there's a man with clear He has a high opinion of his own intellect that can be already I mean it's tough enough hosting a podcast with someone like that. I got it Or would you just know anything about that Dan? Right, I live to fight another day.
Yeah, um, so I mean, you know, he also like he's famous right for his Mental health. Oh, yeah Fucking a royal flush of yes of red flags, but in I don't know if he was like diagnosed schizophrenic But that is definitely like a theme in a lot of his writing and he sort of seems like I Get the impression He wanted to be like a Thomas Pinchin esque sort of guy and just wasn't smart enough really I mean I've from the Few books and stories that I've read of his I like them, but they yeah the short stories I mean they are short stories of course, but they seem like sort of jam-packed with Ideas and whatnot. It almost kind it's kind of the Stephen King thing like how they you know Studios and whatever they take like a short story And it's like awesome kids in corn and they worship a corn god and they're like can we make nine movies out of that? Like let's fucking do it man.
That's sort of like You know once we get into some more of the say like more obscure movies or whatever and those are based on short stories It's kind of like oh it's kind of weird that like they took like such big swings like the thinking of screamers Like right off the top of my head which is like mm-hmm less than ten pages if I remember it right and you know It's a movie with a sequel So they're just like I don't know he seems like one of those guys that jam jam packs a lot of ideas in there Maybe doesn't like follow through on some of them, but I'm like no Throwing shade here. I enjoy the work. I just you know Yeah, I think like so using we can remember that for you wholesale as like a specific example here I I mean it is incredibly brief and I think like in the sort of kind of in the way that like in a horror movie You don't show them on there. You don't want to over explain some of this stuff Right you just like kind of take it for granted that story like kind of zips And the point is like it's sort of just like a longer version of being like what if someone could like implant memories?
But then you wouldn't even know if they were real or right which right? I mean we have like that's we're talking about this again Because it's the same sort of thing we were talking about in Blade Runner last week when you know talking about the replicants Yeah, their memories are all fake right memories are fake their fake right, but they don't know it fucking Rachel She's talking about you know, she's decorative is throwing her memories back at her and she's like, you know She she doesn't even realize like she was just created fairly recently Yeah, and this goes like I mean both the short story and the film I think go like a step further in that regard right? Sort of like the Hall of Mirrors is under construction I think this is gonna be a time keeps popping up I know that like there's certain ideas that he keeps hammering at one of them is like the minority report thing of like being able to see Into the future, but only like a short period of time So what can we do with that information like if you if you know what was gonna happen in five minutes? What could you do with that?
You know? There are so there are these three ball triplets and they all crap out these wooden balls, right? And if you read the ball, it's got a bad guys name on it. Yeah, they all they're all floating in like a Saling yeah, it's like a mix of a sensory ky jelly sort of mixture.
It's a sensory privation rank Yeah, we're not talking about we're not there. My favorite movie minority. Is that your favorite movie? I do have like such a small I mean, it's a great one I've surely I talked about the time I did a set as a pre-cog and nobody knew what I'm doing And I was soaking wet in my underwear in like a heavily air condition.
How have I not heard about this? I don't know what you're talking about. Well, I surely okay That's a teaser for when we get to minority report. Let's let's table me in my underwear for a few more weeks Total recall 1990 directed by I hope I'm saying this right up how they're hoven And that is me part of our home Fear hoven Paul Verhoeven Dutch Paul crazy done bastard We know when we love him.
He's a friend of the show we've discussed Do we do this movie we've done this very movie years ago on the patreon we did this movie that's really funny We were we did a quick verhoeven thing where we did what we do we did this we did Starship troopers and RoboCop and there was a there was a fourth one. Maybe not was there. I don't know wrong Maybe not and for some reason I did look at this and the series was called verhoeven. Huh?
I Don't know why I don't either. I don't either. That's actually really sharing to me Paul Verhoeven we love him. You know, he's got these like two Careers right his his European career where he makes Fucking art house kind of yeah, we're movies for for Europeans died right where he cast like Rucker Howard as a guy who like fucks You know yeah, and then he comes over to Hollywood and he's like you are all pigs and let me show Why I mean that's why I love the American stuff so much or at least like the stuff You know from that point on is because he has nothing what content I love an artist with content for humankind and for like Hollywood in particular and like Americans and like you fat fucking American pigs and all the shit Yeah, it's it's so funny like watching, you know, you read like critical reviews of some of this stuff now like oh, it's so Cress.
Oh, but I can't oh Yeah, you basically just like don't like being told about the pool that you right exactly yeah so Robocop of course a satire of cops the cops fucking robo or otherwise yeah about policing in general but especially in America about the privatization of You know sort of social institutions right? It just it had I mean obviously has like a contempt for like capitalism and like the systems that we like put in place to support it And that's all here too, baby. Oh, it doesn't matter that it's on Mars. We're we're still paying for air over here All right, hey to breathe so the last time I watched this I think would have been Long enough ago that I wouldn't have been I wouldn't have so readily identified this character as like a the average conservative Okay, or like a there's there's something Q and a knee to me about the the the Quaid trajectory where it's like you hate your meaningless Meanial life and so you you give yourself over completely to a fantasy of yourself is like you just so happen to be the one guy who's Cued into the interplanetary conspiracy Yeah, you know That all that all really works.
Yeah, that is like that's sort of the thing with all like 80s movies a good deal of 90s movies as I like there's one good cop that has to take down the bad guys and he has to and these fucking guys in Internal affairs won't let him do his goddamn job. All right, he just won't and then like yeah, you get a little bit older and you're like Oh, God all of propaganda and this definitely you're right It does feel like this guy who was a construction worker has a fantasy of being like an Hero and like fucking not one but two beautiful women and you know killing the bad guy saving the world and everybody you know has to thank him essentially Right. Yeah, but I you know I still love it You know what? Yeah, oh look absolutely.
I feel like it is mocking that idea like I mean it is a lot It is a movie about going to the movies also I feel Right where it's like you need to and you need to identify with the main character in order You know in order like kind of invest is sort of the Hollywood model filmmaker and that is like a ridiculous idea I mean it's like a stupid sort of like very narrow idea of how you can get people to engage with you know films, but it this really highlights the sort of absurdity of that idea by making it Arnold Schwarzenegger as a As a secret agent and yeah, but also in every man. Yeah him as an every man is pretty funny That's pretty good Yeah, well, I'll mention also written by Ronald Schusset Dan O'Bannon John Povol Dan mother fucking O'Bannon All right, love this guy bit of a heavy hitter bit of a heavy hitter course he wrote alien I think of course he wrote dark star. Well. Yeah, I think he wrote and directed return of the living dead if I'm not mistaken I could be mistaken though He did direct okay.
I'm sure he also wrote it. I'm sure I've never seen that one never saw return of living dead down No, I'm not like a I'm not really familiar with like anything of the living dead. Oh, you're not a dead head. I see no I'm not no, I'm not no, I'm not well the first I mean night dawn and day are all masterpieces Return to living dead has nothing to do necessarily with those movies besides And now I have to figure this out because whoever wrote night of a return of the living dead was a contributor or a part of the night of the living dead thing Writers are Rudy Ritchie John A.
Russo and Russell Steiner knows her ring and bell, but oh She yeah, I don't know some there was some sort of falling out between like one of the creators of Return to Living Dead and George Romero because Something with those zombie movies and they just return to living dead is very similar And then it also just like takes that idea and whatever and manipulates it into something else That's more kind of fun and bleak than those other dead movies, which is fun, but we're not talking about dead movies We're talking about Paul Roven's total recall from 1990. Yeah, and do want to also call out We will see we will hear from Dan O'Bannon again when we get to screamers. Oh nice That's like is that maybe the last thing he writes? It could be he you know, he wrote a book on Screenwriting that I'm very interested to read I would he was like Can't Dan O'Bannon hold it The whole premise like the idea of his him writing the book like why he wanted to write it was that he wanted to make up a blueprint of like how to Just like sort of easily write scripts and just like break things down Which I guess is like how every screenwriting book goes but he was just like I have this system in my head that I this is how I write and I want to write that in a book and give it to people It's interesting.
I don't know. Have you had it? It's uh, it's on my Amazon wishlist Total I was so listener if you want to buy a rob please the Dan O'Bannon screenwriting go to it You're gonna have to find his wish list. I'm not telling you where it is.
Don't don't do it And then I'd have to dox myself Who else is in this movie Dan well, how about who's in this movie? Oh, well Arnold Schwarzenegger. We did mention him by voice if not name How do you say Rachel's last name? I know I'm asking the absolute Then I was really hoping you were gonna take that one Yeah, yeah, Rachel T to coat to coten feels good.
I don't know which where the emphasis goes But that's that's how I think it should be pronounced But here's what I'll say though if we go with that so I really enjoyed her performance in this Melina So you could say I was to coat and fanning when she was on screen to coat and fanning Yeah, she's great in this. She's a total badass The other woman in this let me see if she's done anything else. Oh, it's Sharon Sharon a Sharon Stone heard of her She's another one who's just like this is like this obviously this is before basic basic instinct This is the role that gets her basic. It's right if you believe the internet And yeah, she's pretty she's pretty fucking I think she's really good in this There there is some like yeah, I think uh The sort of like early scene stuff where she's sort of riding the line between M.
I. S. E. Grit agent or M.
I not Really good. Yes Really? Yeah, she's kind of a good actor. I think she honestly we should at some point Maybe when we do an erotic thriller series we can do basic instinct but that I I think she's like that movie is you know It's for home.
So it's fucking batshit. Yeah, but she is Outstanding in that movie. Yeah, that's the one where you see her clam, right? That's the one damn And buddy, you know I got it in 4k come on Get in 4c Yeah, my understanding is like People stopped taking her seriously because she showed clam which is like the dumbest thing Imagine yeah, apparently yeah if true that's the dumbest shit imagine what she also like she definitely had a career, you know After that whenever mmm.
Honestly, I but point being like people I People don't really take her like in the I shouldn't even say people I feel like the general the general audience does not take her Super seriously as an actor and that's probably I mean, you know We could talk about it when we eventually do basic instinct But the the shot the infamous shot of clam is so it's so brief and so sort of like did I see it? Did I not see it kind of a thing that? It's like all of the hub up around it is yeah, it's sort of crazy It's like a skinner. It's like a skinner ring.
You're looking you're like did I see something? Did it move? How about that is a instead of calling it a clam a skin ring call it call a skinner? Now a liminal space between shine stones legs Yeah I'm if I keep going if I keep talking about this I'm gonna say something that I'm gonna have to cut out later That well so be it.
Yeah, let's uh so Sharon Stone contrary as as What's the word child ish as we're being we give her two thumbs up? Yeah again? She's great I think she's a great actress. I especially I like her later stuff to and I really like her Like in her interviews in the more recent stuff in the past like ten years or whatever She has just gone off on like Hollywood and like she's like I don't give a fuck about my career anymore I don't care what happened and she's just like fuck them fuck all of these people nobody took me seriously Everybody just wanted to fuck me and you know It wasn't until later on when I got like a little older You know she's like she doesn't have a bunch of work done to her face So she looks older and she's like now I walk into a room and you know everybody doesn't want to fuck me and it's great basically Like that's not good for her Who else is in this we got Michael iron side.
Oh that iron side this fucking guy Love it what just like the face to end all faces on this guy to like this guy rules everything He's in just he's his face is just automatic bad guy of course, but he just I don't know There's something about him like his like his presence He's going up against Schwarzenegger and you're like iron side is like you know in this movie at least They're like I don't know Michael iron side feels like he could take down Schwarzenegger here. Yeah, you know There is a like sort of relentlessness. There's this aggression. It's like yeah animal sort of instinct or whatever coming from him That he's just like yeah, I don't know he's a machine yep We have of course seen him before in starship troopers.
Yes anything else feels like I feels like there's gotta be I don't think so we haven't done Like scanners we haven't done that one. I'm done top gun. These are like the biggies. Yeah the guy is like yeah He's in almost 300 credits on this fucking TV.
Yeah, I was like I'll take a quick look See if we've a yeah watching anything with him in it before have we watched a c-quest 2032 any episodes of fat Uh-huh what about runny cocks runny cocks kind of a verhoeven guy is one of his guys is one of his guys I we all know him from robo cop of course and when you got thrown out the window with those big arms Yeah, no in it. I mean he plays like you know he's the big bad guy and he's the final boss essentially and he's you know He rules over Mars with an iron fist not an iron side, but a fist. That's another guy's job. Yeah What else we got Mel Johnson, Jr.
As Benny the wise-cracking mutant cab driver Yes, of course Michael champion as helm Michael iron sides like right-hand man He's a nerdy. Where's glasses all right give him the computer give him a gun and a computer to carry around with him Who else we got here? Who else we got Roy Brock Smith. It's great one scene.
Yep a little weirdo doctor. Love it He's giving a he's giving a Audrey Horn's husband. Whatever that guy's name was. Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah Got Dean Norris under just so much prosthetics just a big old flap of skin covering his side of his face Oh, I didn't realize I was him.
Oh, that's Dean, baby. No shit. Yep as Tony Wow, yeah, I and of course people will know Dean Norris from the law-nor-man Yes He works for a shop. Yeah, I played uncle Hank in the lon mornin and you know what Rob I got a shout out my boy Robert Piccardo as the voice Love Piccardo.
I love him What do you know him from what's your like what's your Piccardo touchstone? I know he was like a Star Trek guy That's what I was yeah. Yeah, I know mostly from Joe Dante movies He's in he's briefly in the burbs as one of the garbage men He's in inner space as the cowboy That's probably what I know and best from which is funny because it's so the opposite of like most of any like it doesn't look like He's where he has his like very tight curly hair that covers his whole head Yeah, just always always good to see this guy, you know, you know, you're actually good time Philadelphia guy Philly boy, huh? Philly boy Rob.
Yeah, I got it and I got to just say it's funny to be named Piccardo and be on Star Trek And you're bald. Yeah, but you're a different guy. You're a different guy, right? So am I getting this street?
Yeah Johnny Cab one of the one of the most iconic parts in this film. Yeah, honestly Scared me as a boy. Oh, don't get in one of those Johnny Cabs very frightening again Like not that this is the only thing that predicted self-driving cars, but the fact that it predicted that they will crash and blow up I gotta give it points for that. Yeah, that's I mean, I love I love failed technology and movies I hate when a sci-fi movie from the future takes place in this future, right?
Everything's so clean and then you press a button and it works everything works the way it's supposed to like technology has never done ever Yeah, even things like you have a transmitter in your head wrap a wet towel around it, right? Yeah, that's great. That's great stuff It is also like a I like you have to literally dampen the signal. Yes, literally.
Yeah So that's about it for our cast. I think yeah, those are the big players here. Oh and Priscilla Alan as two weeks Plays a Quato that guy. Oh, he's in a bunch of that's a guy.
Yeah, I thought it was a puppet. Well the guy that's attached to the puppet Oh What's that guy's name? I cannot for like that Harry Robert Costanzo. Yeah, yeah Harry Costanzo no that Harry is his work construction buddy's from from the construction site.
Yeah, it's fine Well, we don't have to dwell on that but David now last guess David now I don't know damn I just don't Never mind So movie opens cold open we're on Mars. We see two people walking around in spacesuits one shorts and eager one is a brunette We have not we don't know yet, but it is Rachel. What I say to cotton to cotton to cotton And then shorts and eager falls off of this ledge bus open the glass of his helmet and the vacuum of Mars starts sucking out his Eyes and his tongue and he wakes up in a cold spot. Oh Then yes, he's very scared when he wakes up next to you Sharon sewn and she's like oh She like starts like so funny like how small she is next to him Like I think I was really marbling at is like when they're face to face.
It's like oh my god Your head is twice as big as hers. Yeah, just the biggest fucking melon on this man I'm good and listen as a guy with a big head. I can relate, you know If I take a picture next to a normal size birth, I can It looks like it really yeah, I can relate to Arnold Schwarzenegger No And she's like what happened to have another one of those Mars dreams and he's like yeah, it was Whatever and What's a Laurie in Sharon's own same Laurie says Was that that woman there again? And he's like yeah, she was there again And then she like she gets on she's like first is playful and like who was that?
What's her name? And he's like I don't know and then she starts getting like really mad like fucking tell me her name He's like I don't know she's in my dreams They we see them like make breakfast we see Schwarzenegger make himself like a protein health shake Which I liked because we're like how do we justify that this man is enormous? It's protein shakes in the morning. It drinks a protein shake and us just runs a jackhammer for ten hours The guy next to him Harry doesn't look like that, but yeah He's not hitting those protein shakes though in the morning.
That's probably the difference. Not he's hanging on by a threat So as he's as he's having breakfast quade is watching the news stuff and we get some this is like I mean Premover hoven stuff just like talking about the you know It's like a news report about a rebel uprising on Mars like in the mines on Mars And it's sort of like thankfully the Martian police were able to quell the uprising and it's just like two minutes of Yeah, yeah, yeah, just just just me. There's a shot where like somebody dies and then a cop stands over him and then like keeps riddling the body with And then I love this then then the Schwarzenegger's name here is quade quade turns to Lori and says maybe we should take a trip to Mars Okay, and she's like why what are you talking about like I hate Mars like you don't want to go to Mars Why don't we go to like Saturn Saturn? Yeah, he's like I don't like it Sucks Saturn sounds like why don't we go on like a royal Caribbean cruise?
Yeah, totally. Yeah, like where's the adventure? Where's the gunplay? You know, yeah, Mars is I what they call like dark tourism or whatever?
Yeah, yeah, it's like our vice journalist, right? Yeah So shorts and a great goes to work right and on the way there he sees a commercial for recall Okay, should I play the recall commercial here down with the recall commercial? All right, I'm gonna play it now Right now right. Oh my god.
Very unprofessional Do you dream of a vacation at the bottom of the ocean? But you can't float the bill Have you always wanted to climb the mountains of Mars? But now you're over the hill Then come to recall in portmoor where you can buy the memory of your ideal vacation cheaper safer and better than the real thing So don't let life pass you by call recall for the memory of a life Love it. That's so good So quade immediately your well it first he goes to work right and he's Jack hammering takes a quick break He's like hey Harry have you had you I almost did it.
Oh, sorry. I almost did it and I didn't do it But yeah, he does. Hey, howdy Yeah, he's like what you know you recall. He's like I love Harry doing that.
Oh, yeah recall recall recall Yeah, it's a jingle. I love when someone knows about the commercial. Yeah, and he's like yeah, don't fuck with that I know someone who you know they had to lobotomize him like fried his brain until lobotomize him totally So it quade immediately makes a point. Yeah, so in this moment though Harry tells him that you know I know for a guy who got lobotomized right and then quade is like oh no shit Huh, and then he goes back to Jack hammering and then Harry we sort of hang on him for a beat What and like he's just sort of staring at quade for a minute before he goes back to work?
I mean the whole point of like one of the points of this is that we don't know By the end of this we don't know if it's a dream or reality, right? This is sort of the this this is a check in the reality column if you ask me I agree because like in the last scene when he leaves his apartment Sharon Stone hits him with a similar like have a good day and it's sort of like hangs on her like looking at him And that's much more ambiguous like it makes sense for her to be that invested in her husband Yes, right and be like is he miserable with me Sharon Stone? Yeah, he's just like unhappy in our marriage or whatever. Yeah, it makes less sense for Harry to be like Exactly, it's not like geez.
I hope quade doesn't go you know liquid data his brain. He's the only Gigantic guy who can operate if we didn't have him we need to buy a new piece of equipment Yeah, we don't have the money right now to buy the the quade replacement machine So but yes quade does immediately make an appointment every call Love the scene between him and Bob McLean the sales right here. So good It must be there must be nothing more fun as an actor than playing like a sleazy salesman. Oh my god It's yeah, it's like a villain kind of role, you know where you get you have to like play it up and be a little like You know a little cheeky a little like whatever, but it's also small.
Yeah less consequence You know the whole movie isn't riding on your performance or anything totally and I do love this sort of like the tone Excuse me the tone they set for this business where it's like this is not a this is a kind of a fly-by-night operation It's just yeah, it for like for a company that's big. That's like fucking with your brain Yeah, it reminds me like a real fucking sort of flam operation. Yeah, it did make me think of like Osempic how you can just buy that from like any website now basically. I'm yeah, listen.
Am I gonna do am I gonna do Osempic? Yeah, eventually probably and I'm gonna subscribe to the page and yeah, I'll do some recall on care But yeah, no, I love the you know, there's like a moment where quade is like What about the guy who had to get lobotomized and you know that there's like a long nervous pause He's like old news, you know ancient news my friend. Yes things have come a long way since I and I love the chart Fatality is a time. Yeah, it's like actually doing something it doing recall Yeah, totally shuttles and how like the shot that's what it is like it the shuttle column or line is ascending and the recall one is saying straight Is a straight line very low very very small But he yeah, this guy Bob is trying to convince quade here to go on a recall trip It's a lot cheaper than going on one of those pain in the ass actual vacations where you know You lose your luggage you get bad weather some fucking cab driver rips you off or whatever now Dan All of these things are having you off all of these things kind of happen.
Yes. Yes Which is another check mark. I think in the reality section of this in the reality section really I think so I think I don't think I Mean it doesn't make any sense for him to say these things as a negative and then have them actually be part of his dream Well, if the point is to make it is as real as possible as real as possible And also you know if this if we are to accept that he is like deep in a delusion then when Roy Brock Smith shows up in the middle of all this and it's like you are now just like creating now Like you were gone off script right and that's Roy Brock Smith the police dr Edgmar Edgmar the guy who you heard in the recall commercial. Yes That I think right it's like if he's just using his own memories to generate this new material then like maybe that's what's happening By the end of Dan do you think it's a dream or do you think it's a real?
I think that's beside the point Rob. Yeah, so do I but also what do you think got to be a dream? It's like it feels like it should be a dream, right? But I want to be real guys that it's very I'm gonna say it lynchy in the way it ends on this like hyper hyper happy ending Yeah, and similarly it is very meta in that way.
Yeah, like I mean, yeah Yeah, you know, I did just say that so Bob He says you know real vacation you got all these problems here But with a recall vacation, you know, and then he runs down like he gives him the Mars vacation package Which is like 800 credits and he's like for a little bit more for 300 additional credits I could make you a secret agent spy, right? And and then he's like you you know, you by the end, you know, you get the girl you killed a bad guy and you save the entire Planet, right? Which is exactly what happens in the movie, right? So that's that's definitely a check market in the it's all a dream thing But that's why this is a movie about watching movies and not living in reality because like you know If we accept that like quaid it, you know Quaid has some like fantasy of being like this like great liberator or whatever.
Yeah, there is a real Civil war playing out on Mars. Yes. He could have gone, you know, he could have done that like he could have Focused on that instead. He was like I gotta feel like I did that like is you mean I actually go to Mars and fight in the rebellion or he could be the savior for everybody exactly right?
It's like it's the you know, they literally call it an ego trip. Yes, right? That's like what the recall package is called so it's like in the same way that like I think a lot of you know like action movies, especially in the 80s I think are kind of a response to the fact that like There there's no like just cause to fight for I think there's some like there is some listlessness around the idea that like all Wars are actually just like these imperialists sort of looting ventures and not not anything work There's no like higher cause to commit yourself to right doesn't feel like a world war two where you're like fighting for what seem Seems like a good cause exactly are clear good guys and bad guys kind of a thing. Yeah, so then like action movies in the you know Especially mostly 80s, but like your rambos and stuff.
It's about these like these rogue agents who like get it, man I mean like Rambo in particular is about like, you know Vietnam obviously, but like Vietnam We didn't we just sort of left right We didn't win we mostly lost and they're like Rambo has a line It's literally literally in the movie where he says are we allowed to win this time where he has to go back to Vietnam and single-handedly win Vietnam, you know all this is to say I think this really like you know I know Verhoeven didn't write this but it really gels his presentation of the story like yeah It really highlights his low low opinion of Hollywood movies as this sort of as the sort of like placating brain killing Exercises where yeah, it's like propaganda is what it is like yeah, yeah 100% It gives you that it's like the safe way to express some like violent fantasy some latent violent fantasy totally so They they it says one violent fantasy, please yeah They the Shraff Kuwait into this the giant recall machine And they're like, you know, they give him a sedative and then they're like all right We're gonna ask you some questions, you know be as honest as possible because you know we It's in your best interest to be honest here. So you know your recall could be perfect So the woman is like it starts asking about like women and stuff and first is like you know sexual orientation head row Yeah, throw And then she's like what kind of woman do you like? Then like given all these body types like slim athletic voluptuous athletic Like what about a hair color brunette blonde brunette? What about the next one?
I mean it's the funniest thing is it's like It's like aggressive to me or sleazy So you're I know that's having a moment it is have the word to me is having a moment right now It's like online. Yeah, yeah, very to me or everyone's saying that everybody And I everybody just learned a new word That one that one I don't quite I don't quite get the What happened there the memes are getting they're getting away from themselves. Oh Dan. See you've turned 33 now You're gonna stop understanding.
No cuz there are other people in their 30s who are like I get this either Yeah, they're hanging on tighter. Yeah, I am I guess yeah Yeah, yeah, it's such a thing right now. Yeah, it's very I mean the hawk to a girl got signed by like CAA. Of course you did I've lost the plot No, this is this is just the world now.
It was like a girl drunk on the street and asked what do you do free man and she's like hot to and a Month later, she's on every she's on club random. Yeah, she's Ilmar being like so would you ever date a guy in his 70s? What if he was like really cool and had his own TV show? Let me show you my iPod.
I've got every green days on But this is club deliberate, that's right So Kuwait is like Salise de Mu this is what he wants from his women And then we cut to Bob Trying to sell somebody else on the on on recall here and the person seems like a little tentative about the whole thing And then the video screen in the foreground is just a woman freaking out and try here say he had a skitsoid Embellism is that's right. Yeah skits on embellism. Yeah, and yes, we go the camera movements and everything I mean it's so fun to like we we follow Bob as he runs from his office into the lab area and short-sayinger is like fully like was it like when your veins are popping fast Fasculating vascular vascular. Yeah, but his like his all the muscles and veins and his neck are just popping and he's like You know, it's doing he's doing the full like you Thrashing he's thrashing about he's like you blew my cover there.
They'll be here any minute. They'll kill you all and yeah They're they're like they try and they try and calm him down. He's not going for it She the one of the scientists there She grabs like a trank gun essentially it's one of those like needle guns with like the the bottle that screws the pile. Yeah Yeah, she shoots him nine times with this fucking thing just loads his ass up like this guy's too big We need like horse tranquilizers, but the first people are special.
Yeah, he passes out and Bob is like what the fuck happened here and and she's like he you know, we're gonna do it and you know He started ranting and raving about you know being a secret agent and all this shit And he's like that's the fucking implant moron and she's like it can't be that's impossible We didn't do it yet and and then Bob's like oh shit and he's like alright Dump him in a cab erases file refund all this money if anybody asks we don't know who Douglas Quaid is right a funny detail in the short story Is that they only refund half his money? But yes when when he wakes up he's in the back of a Johnny cab and what's a Johnny cab? Oh, it's obviously it's a cab Driven by a robot man played voiced by Robert Ricardo. Hi.
I'm Johnny cab It's some of the most fucked up animatronics. Oh, yeah, this guy so hopefully all the all the visual effects first of all Stonin breath taken there. Yes. It's great, but it's also stylized.
You're like watching a bit of a comic book or something Yeah, honestly, you know, you know, there are no no real like like digital effects maybe a little bit in some like the exterior scenes, but The whole time I'm watching this I'm like motherfuckers today. Don't have the balls to make a movie like this, you know Honestly, it was a Rob button. Is that his name? Rob routine?
But he also did the effects for the thing ever heard of it movie known somewhat for its special effects. Yes, he he was a Stan Winston guy Stan they wanted Stan Winston for the thing he was working on American werewolf couldn't do it They gave him Rob routine like the protein routine whenever and you know the rest is history, but the guy knows what fuck is They went unbelievably good and like the the Mars like decompression heads Yeah, when like when the when the atmosphere fills with air. Yeah, and their eyes sink back in. Mm-hmm You're like, oh, these are just like elaborate stress balls, but it's so good.
Yes. Yeah so Quade gets out of the car he's heading home and he's he's Confronted by Harry and like three other guys and they grab him and they pull him inside and he's like what's going on and Harry's like You should have done that quade. You shouldn't went to recall and he's like I didn't go what like I didn't go to recall what are you talking about like he doesn't remember anything and And Harry's got a gun on him. He's like Harry were friends.
He's like no I was assigned to watch you and he's like what and there's a fight and Quade ends up fucking rakes everybody's neck. Yeah snaps absolutely everybody's neck. What also shoots at people. Yeah, the one guy who gets shot He like the guy like whips out a gun quade grabs the gun puts his arm behind his back and then like shoots through his back He'll just chest looks amazing It does and the god that wide shot at the end of the fight with all the fucking bodies Yeah, and the blood spatter on the walls of this just like concrete.
Yeah, whatever you call that like It's like a little outcome over whatever. Yeah, Alco that's the word. Um, yeah, so I think to break for it But this is like I mean and that later on we got some real like some great squib work But you know this is like for hovin in 1990 the dude is like give me more squibs, please I would like some more squibs I yeah, I mean that guy on the escalator. Yes later guy is like that is the funniest thing in the world.
It really is That's that's for hovin sets of humor right there Quade gets home Laurie is like practicing tennis with a hologram or whatever and he runs in he shuts off all the lights He's like I was just attacked and you know I went to recall but and then Harry and some guys they they jumped me they tried to kill me But I killed them and she's like you're having a mental breakdown right now like that didn't happen and he's like What about this and they were here with the David Byrne. Yeah, take a look at these hands Yeah, take a look at these hands So he's he goes in the bathroom. Yes clean up. Yep, and We see a shadowy figure in the darkness.
No pull a gun What he runs out and alter kitchen sous. He turns the lights on who's shooting at him. Glory. What?
I thought you were my wife Lori. Yeah, uh-uh Yeah, they fight there's they have a He throws her into the kitchen. She grabs a knife She cuts him a couple times and then eventually he does get the upper hand He gets the gun any sort of it holds her gunpoint and she's like Oh when he went into the bathroom She was like I'm gonna call a doctor and then she we see her call somebody and it's Michael iron side But we don't see any their interaction, but it doesn't matter because you take one Logan. I mean, yeah, like a doctor bad news It's not a good doctor.
Yeah, it's maybe like a doctor giggles or something this guy. Yeah, um, so I love this interaction. He's like what's going on and she's like I don't know I we hadn't met up until like six weeks ago I was supposed to like pretend to be your wife I'm just here like kind of watching and whatever and he's like what are you talking about like what's You know who am I then and she's like, I don't know man I just work here and then there's like she that she like kind of like starts to turn on the charm And she's like, you know, quaid I could favor to sign yeah And she's like you sure you don't want to do it one more time for old time's sake She's like you could tie me up and she does this thing where she like takes a straps off her shirt like ties up her hands And then he's like a de noioso pinky and then You know, this is all just a distraction because behind and we see like the surveillance from outside and we see guys running up with guns and And then we get a line that's probably most famous from this movie Good no noticing that too. Yeah clever girl.
She's as smart as a dino But yes Jurassic Park 94 93 ow the nerve of that movie. I know it was a hack Spielberg Well Spielberg has said right that you wanted the velociraptor to be Sharon Stone instead of a dinosaur. Yeah I mean I would watch the movie So quaid he he makes a break for it, right? He grabs like grips jacket takes the gun runs out we see the guys like it's like this really like What do you call it like a brutalist architecture just concrete everything it just sucks You know not a brutalism guy.
Yeah, you know not for me. Okay Quaid like duck he hides out these guys like run past him whatever and And we do find out that Michael iron sides character Richter and Laurie are actually together Don't know if maybe if they're boyfriend girlfriend or married, but they are together a little later on like the guy helm is like Yeah, man. I wouldn't want my my old lady like fucking that guy and iron side is just like what are you saying that she liked it? And I'm sure she hated it.
Yeah So well So while he is he goes back to the apartment right after he loses them and while he's there he gets the phone call So he first see for that. Yeah, he we got like we got a little bit We get the chase scene where he runs up the escalator, right? And then oh right there guys at the top of the escalator and you know everybody ducks except for this one guy who's standing in front of Quaid and the dude just gets absolutely lit up and then quaid uses him as a human shield Kills those guys at the top of the stairs turns around shoots at the guys at the bottom throws the man's dead body at them Really great stuff. Yep, and at this point quaid runs through he goes through the the X-ray machine to I forgot about this moment.
Yeah, it's like bravo boys. You did it. Yeah, he goes through the X-ray machine Which was set up earlier also? Yeah, so it's a long tunnel hallway kind of a X-ray machine where guards are standing on one side You see like a green skeleton and then in this you know, we can see his gun is in red And yeah, their guards at the end where he's coming out and the guards at where he walked in he's stuck So there's nothing else to do but break through it.
Yep. Oh great effect looks great Skellington getting bigger and bigger and then yeah, yeah, yeah, so what happens next row? What's going on he does make it to the subway right gets away from Richter talks to Cohegan, right and he gives him like a report and coagans like I didn't tell you to kill him don't kill him and and he's like He does that thing where he's like, oh, you're coming in real fuzzy here and like just turns them off But yeah after this he equated he goes to It's like a it's like a flop house whatever. I don't I don't remember how he found out about this or how he ended up here That's a good there is a thing right there is a thing, but I don't know what it like yeah That sends him here, but it's basically like it's a shitty hotel.
Yeah, isn't it called like the Ritz Carlton or something? It might it's got like a it's got a misleading name Yeah And then he gets called from some guy and he's like the guy says we used to work together at the agency You said if you ever disappeared to come find you and that's what I did I'm leaving this if you look out your window. I'm leaving this this You know suitcase or whatever here by the phone and quid's like wait Who are you and he's like I don't have time like I gotta go and you fucking just hangs up on him and quid runs down and like First of an old lady old lady goes to grab the suitcase you any yeah? Yeah, oh wait He also this is where he puts on the damp town puts the wrap the towel around his head He goes to grab this suitcase and the lady goes for it too.
He's like no, that's mine and she's like really fighting for it Yeah, obviously yeah, obviously he overpowers her. Yeah, this is one for the dream column that there's any struggle at all And then as he's running away. Yeah fuck you asshole And this even I was like I thought of the Fuck nemesis the little lady shooting the android totally shanglu. I'm like yeah These are like a weird little trope like a sassy old lady.
Yeah like an old lady being like extreme like having a gun I swear you asshole. Yeah, I know they could do that. Yeah Also one for the dream column like that little bit. It's like very tropey sure But then I do like that he gives her like a respectful bow.
I thought that was a weird little choice So he goes off into a Johnny cab once more. Yeah, there's a quick little like sort of shoot out fight scene in this like Shopping circle or whatever But yeah, he jumps into a Johnny cab He's like he's telling the Johnny cab to just drive and he's like that's not a destination and then he quid gets it's angry And he rips it rips the Johnny cab robot out of its seat and then takes control and he's got this little like joystick that he's driving the car with gets away And then he ducks into like like an industrial area where he can you know like open up the case see what's going on here Dives out of the car car hits a wall explodes into a fireball. Yes, but yeah goes upstairs. I loved this like You know, he's like he finds like a surface to set the suitcase down There's a bunch of rats on it.
Yeah, I love that It's two real rats and then fake rats for him to swipe away. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah looks great.
It looks great So yeah, he opens the suitcase pulls out one by I love this too in any movie where someone takes inventory Yes, I love an inventory I love that like he's pulling all this stuff out and because he doesn't know what any of it does just yet He's just sort of like he pulls out the claw thing to get the the bug out of his head and he looks at me like Oh, yeah, what's it? It looks like a like a paint roller without the yeah brush on it. Yeah, definitely Yeah, also in this moment too when he pulls out that computer at first So that there's like the computer is in a bigger bag and when he pulls it out you see The the jacket or the long coat that when he disguises himself as the woman. Yeah, it's there Yes, just a little touch like that.
I'm like, oh look at you fucking You thought about this and I like that. I appreciate that. Yeah Last thing he does is open up a smaller briefcase that has a video screen. Mm-hmm.
It plays a video of quite what not? not quite I love his like yeah It's short-singer on the screen and he's like I got some news for you buddy you are not you you are me and And he gives him a background He's like just a quick sort of like listen I worked for the agency up until like recently and then I met a woman and she changed my mind about these things and I've switched sides and I worked for the rebellion now and all this stuff and realized I was fighting for the bad guys Yeah, so but first thing we got to do here is get that bug out of your head and He's like I want you to take that gun the one that looks like this and Take it take that end and jam it up your nose as far as you can when you hear the crunch, you know, you got it It does it does with a rubber face. Yes, big face. Yes.
We got a great rubber face agonizing short-sonegger rubber face Just this huge like it looks like a golf ball coming out of his nose looks so good and it's about that big into Yeah So he cracks it open finds a transmitter and also in this This like suitcase of you know supplies is some food which he was eating But he decides to push it into a piece of food and give it to the rats. Yes So it's it's right around this time that old iron sides and his his crew Yep, they finally catch up to him right the signal is like back to full strength because it's not in his dampened head. Yep So he runs off. Yeah, he's able to get away while they're like tracking a rat that has the that's eating the piece of food with the tracker in it And they shoot the screen which makes makes it glitch and we keep hearing Get you asked a loss just get your ass to Mars over and over We forgot to mention the very important Hologram bracelet.
Oh the hologram right. There's a bracelet that projects a hologram of you. It may come up later Yeah, it's a check-offs hologram bracelet Yes, so this is seen ends with iron side putting a rat down. Yeah shoots the rat gets a guy is bad dude And then we're on Mars.
We're at like the Red customs on Mars. I mean we see iron side and his crew. They're walking through they're talking like seems like some sort of military captain or whatever And he's like yeah, they're talking about like their graffiti It says like what it's like what is it with this fucking bullshit like fuck these guys and fuck the rebellion and all these guys We should just kill them all that kind of shit. I love the establishing shot where you it's a bunch of normal looking people The conspicuous woman you've ever seen a woman looks about six six Yeah, shoulders is wide as football pants.
Yeah built like a brick shit house And yes, we see this woman talking to customs and how long you staying two weeks And then are you bringing any fruits or vegetables with you? And then she says two weeks and then it just keeps saying it two weeks panicking and pulling her mouth open and shit like How do you direct this? I know I know it's pretty amazing. Yes, it's like yeah, it's like you're not you you're You're behind you right like obviously like you watch this and you're like well.
This is obviously Quaid somehow. I don't know how yet though Like I don't know what's going on and then Richter and his crew they're walking with the captain They're about to leave and he stops because he hears this woman just keeps saying two weeks and turns and he's like that woman there People don't usually do that. Yeah, that's unusual. It's him.
They're like arrest him and this woman that she keeps like She's like glitching out and like her ear sort of like opens up the wig falls off And it's just his bald head and then we got like a it's like a stop-motion shot of the head opening up and Shorts and Eggers like head being under it and then he throws the woman the female head at one of the guys And it says get ready for a surprise now Dan. That's a fun quip to say before you explode But it would have been even better if you had just answered that question about the fruit and vegetables earlier and didn't go into a full-on freakout you know Just saying But you know this technology. It's glitchy. It doesn't it's not perfect enough.
It's a little glitchy Look, I think he made the best of a bad situation. Sure It's just my two cents sucks to lose the head, but also you want to be carrying that around the rest of the movie? No, God, no And yeah, Richter sees this starts shooting and then breaks open one of the windows into the vacuum of Mars People get sucked out all everybody's like you know holding on for dear life and then It's this is a funny setup that they have that like if in the case of a window breaking and people being sucked out into Mars Somebody has to press this button. It's not automatic.
All right. It could just suck everybody out unless somebody presses this button here Hopefully when this happens is nearby the button exactly but somebody does press that button and You know the people that were holding on and floating fall and then quade sees an opportunity and he ducks out and he runs through like You know rolls under a gate right before it closes I also love then iron size being like open it. Why why can't you open it? It's like they're all connected I don't know yeah, cuz you're a fucking idiot man.
You shot the window. We're on Mars guy It's not bulletproof even I know I know it seems like single pane glass Yeah, it's just like shitty glass, but also that's a lamb shackle operation That's the thing like it feels like you know it does feel like some real shit where they're like yeah This stuff isn't like it's not good. We had to cut corners here. We were trying to say money Yeah, it's like an it's like a really it's like a yeah like a futuristic old mining town where it's just like a bunch of shanties Yes, except on if these shanties fall apart you get sucked into the vacuum of space right yeah, okay We go to the Hilton first yes Part of his go bag included a false identity to check into the Hilton also a safety deposit box Yes opens that up and it's an ad for a sexy strip club type joint.
It's a it's brothel It says sex sex on there and says the last resort yes Funny name, and he flips it over and sees the name Molina and yeah this I think is so funny when he writes it out again He's like yes, that is my handwriting Yeah It's so stupid um so yes he with this checks into the hotel room upstairs and yeah Checks in but then he's like he's pretty quick to get a cab to the last resort And this is when we meet Benny who's like the fast talking cab driver who knows everybody knows everything knows the way that she goes in Mars Mm-hmm, and he's constantly like they're getting in the cab and like you know gunfire starts going off And he's like welcome the Mars baby and he's like get in before they arrest us And you know it's like it seems like you're getting early start going to the last resort right away I'm all this kind of shit gives him the I got five kids, you know to feed all this shit Let me go to the last resort as he's walking up. We see like some mutants some people with like yeah Well, it's worth mentioning that there are a bunch of mutants on Mars. Yeah because of air pollution and solar radiation Right, this is just how it goes. Yeah, it's a little girl.
He's nice to her Yeah, she's like I could tell you when your birthday is and he's like okay It's just like your tourists and he's like how'd you know how did you know that? Let me kiss the normal side of your face Yeah, um Also, yeah, they mentioned that all of these mutants are Telepathic yes, right they have telepathy. That's another way. Yeah, if you don't know the word telepathic.
Let me explain it to you They have telepathy So at the last resort Quade goes up to the bar asked for Melina Bartenders like Melina's busy right now. Why don't you talk to I don't know the woman's name is it's not Mary. Isn't it could be Mary? I think it is Mary.
Yeah, and this is I mean one of the most like famous shots from this movie I think it is the three-titted woman where she turns around she's like hey wanna you know Want to have a good time and she opens her shirt three tits You know as a child I'm like whoa there could be three of them turns out not so much not really no the answer is no I'm talking about getting off easy Re-mutation. No everyone else has like crazy No, we head whoa, Jesus. Whoa Yeah, right everybody else has coral refed And meanwhile, she's like I got a third tit normal face. Yeah, I'm a sex worker and luckily my mutant my mutation is just another tip And then quades like Nana I'd rather wait for Melina and then she Bartender calls over Melina and she she comes over and she's like wait it's been a while and all this and Then she grabs him by the dick Bonds Which would be in this thing blondes disgusting it's so gross it's great line such a gross line And it might be my favorite in the whole movie So that's such a crazy interaction.
I love it so much. Yep. Yep. Sleezy and Demir one might say yes.
Yes Then they go upstairs Tony D Norris. He stops him and he's like you got a lot of nerve showing your face around here and quades like Oh, he's talking right when I said coral refaced. This is really the guy. Yeah They go up to her room.
There's another thing right I noticed this with So like in in Robocop and Starship Troopers, right? There's this They have like it's their unisex like lockers and bathrooms and stuff They've taken away like any sort of like privacy based on that right in this also though when they get up to Melina's room The door and the wall are have holes in them. It looks like it's graded. So like yeah, so she's just like like presumably Everybody here has the same doors and everybody's just fucking in these rooms and like there's no privacy Like anybody can just like peep in and shit, you know just sort of a weird little touch that I feel like Verhoeven gets like He hits on that like the privacy thing and how there is none in the future Just like in small subtle ways.
Yeah, like in other movies and whatever It's interesting it is interesting because you want to hear about Dutch architecture. Do you know about that? I know one thing I was watching so I wish I could remember who this was I was like watching a YouTube Sort of video essay thing. I was watching who told me I was watching a Dutch YouTube Yeah, and they were talking about like it was about Verhoeven And I can't remember what point they were trying to make it probably was something to do with this But the sort of like style of architecture and it ties into like a specific religious movement from like hundreds of years ago I love it huge windows unobstructed view into the home sort of like This doesn't really track with the movie But like I think the idea was like well if you've got nothing to hide then you've got nothing to worry about like that kind of thing Yeah, like a Christian way, but Sort of like that had staying power in terms of how like Dutch houses were designed for hundreds of years or whatever interesting I mean, I don't know how involved he is with like the set design, but it is consistent through several of his movies So you got to imagine I kind of feel like yeah, that's it and I also think he's just like very fascinated with the idea of like how you can make these sort of you know sort of like non-in-of-social strides and Especially in like Starship Troopers and RoboCop.
It's like oh, yeah, it's all it's all unisex like we're all all peers here Yes, but we're also committing on speakable evil on a moment to moment basis. Yeah Yeah, I think I mean that is interesting if that's like something that he's going for the idea that like oh If you got nothing to hide like we need to cover your windows Where which is such a thing now that like I feel like I've heard many people say that like I don't care about the fucking Patriot act I got nothing to hide right you're like oh well, okay Let's see what happens in like 10 years. I don't know. Let's see what happens privacy Yeah, and now nothing is private every you see that thing it was like a week ago where like everyone's social security number was was Taken yeah, somebody in the country someone had a very funny joke about this I saw on Twitter they were like they're like that's right I have them all and they posted a screenshot of like a list of numbers and it was one one one one one one one one And then you know that one one one two one one one two three very funny Yeah, so they go up to Malina's room with a hole in the door.
Yep, and as soon as they get up there She's like how dare you where have you been where have you been thought you were dead? I thought co-hagen tortured you to death is what she says and he's like wait I don't know and then she kisses on and she's like wait. He's like wait wait I don't know. I don't remember you.
I don't remember me and she's like what are you talking about? He's like they've they wipe my memories I don't it was on earth. They put me on earth with a wife and and then she's Yeah for the listener. Oh, I just watched 200 flies flying a Rob's mouth It's a green mile style a reverse green mile.
Yeah, John T Johnny you long Johnny you long She when he mentions the wife though. She's like you're married and then she can't she's like completely focused on the marriage portion of it Which again that feels like a checkmark in the dream column You know all this stuff like if she's like so deep into the rebellion and all this and he's like they wipe my memory And they dumped me on on earth and I don't remember anything That seems like important information and when he says and they gave me a wife That doesn't seem like the right thing to get hung up on in this moment. Mm-hmm, but these computer programs, you know You gotta the she to send him off to the next place. She can't go with him and all this stuff, right?
Whatever But she does send him off. She's like get the hell out of my face get away from me and he's like alright then he leaves Benny Benny's downstairs. He's groping the the woman with three tits and And then she's like so you want to go upstairs? Like I don't know maybe later.
I gotta go and They he brings it back to the hotel and this is in the hotel room is when we we get the dr. Edgemar scene Which basically it's a turning point in the movie where as dr. Walks in and he's like You're not here right now. I'm not here right now.
He's like Can't just start he like grabs him and he's like that's funny. Where are we then? It's like we're at recall and you're having an episode right now skits away to emblism You're having skits away to emblism all of this is made up and you know We're trying to get you out and he's like sure you are like, you know This obviously you're full shit and the doctors like what makes more sense here that you're you know having a Mental break in at recall or that you are a construction worker that was placed there There was a conspiracy against a construction worker that was placed on earth because he's actually a secret spy and Kind of like makes a little sense to equate right and then he's like I have somebody who wants to talk to you Laurie walks in and there are two shots here. There's a shot.
They're close up shots on her face and then quades face. Yeah, right? To me like she when she comes in again, I mean, I'm not to keep hammering on this, but she's very familiar right she walks in she's like You know Doug honey like you know, I'm like I'm I'm worried about you baby Yeah, I'm worried about you and he's like oh are like where you and she's like I'm at recall You know they put me in here They tried to you know, they want me to help you like come back or whatever And she's like and she's like the shot at the close-up shots of her and then like the reverse of Schwarzenegger. I don't know I can't I think in this moment.
I think she's lying Maybe it's just like her the face like the Sharon Stone like in this role kind of a thing like I don't believe you woman Well and it I think very pointedly that's like the one shot maybe in the whole movie That's like really from his point of view. Yes. So I mean, I don't know what to do with that. I don't know what to do with it either Yeah This movie does invent the red pill it does it tries the red pill quade is like take the red pill all right you'll wake up and You know, I'll we can we could fix this or whatever and quades like oh, so if this is just a dream I can kill you right now, right and Yeah, I want to I want to get this right because it is it is fun the way that it all kind of goes down comes to pass Yeah On Okay, he says I could pull the trigger and it won't matter He's like it won't it won't make the slightest difference to me Doug the consequences to you would be devastating In your mind I'll be dead and with no one to guide you out you'll be stuck here in permanent psychosis the walls of reality will come crashing down around you One minute you're the savior of the yeah the rebel cause the next thing you know, you'll be coagans bosom buddy You'll even have fantasies about alien civilizations as you requested But in the end back on earth you'll be lobotomized so get a grip on yourself Doug and put the gun down It's it plays out exactly as the doctor says almost immediately Yeah, Doug takes the pill and then He notices the doctor is sweating and he's like if it's a dream you don't sweat dreams And then fucking just ice is the doctor right there and spits the pill out and then ice is his wife Well soon after that soon after but as soon as he shoots that doctor Yeah, Laurie is like now you've done it and the wall behind Doug literally comes crashing down and guys with guns come out And they take him they rest him and they're dragging him away And this is when when Alina shows up she comes up the elevator machine gun in hand and just like stuck shooting dudes there's a back and forth between a fight scene between Laurie and Alina and At first Laurie gets the upper hand she has a knife And then quade gets a gun and he's like she's like come on honey Don't you remember we had some good times or whatever on your wife and then he shoots her in the head and he's like consider that our divorce Not as best work.
That's best work, but then I look Molina's like your wife. He's like yeah, she's like she real bitch Which again like in the version you know the version of this where it's a dream is like oh, yeah like oh, yeah You hate my wife to my bitch of a wife. Yeah, yeah She's always like she'll tell me not to go to Mars and not to kill a bunch of people and not to fucking leave a rebellion Yeah, so after this where we go from here Dan Some more is just getting we yeah, there's a chasing you know iron side They chase them to the last right they go back to the last resort Benny drives Benny's just driving him back and forth between these two places. Yeah, he's there Yeah, quade, you know after the first ride gives him like a huge fat water credits space credits.
Yeah, and Benny's like Shit, okay. I'm just going way outside for you. Just like wherever you go. Yeah, yeah So they they run through and it is revealed that there's a secret panel in the Love a secret panel.
I love the way that this plays out the way like the way everyone acts like yeah Tony like Russia's them through the door in a wall and then as soon as they shut the door they Put a table there with like drinks already set and throw the seats everybody starts sitting there and everybody just sort of acts casual And then yeah, Richter and and helm walk in with her guns with some soldier guys behind him And this Mary the three-tated woman she walks up and she's like hey you looking for a good time And he's like fuck off or whatever and he's like no he says where are they and she's like I don't know who you're talking about She turns around and he just shoots her in the back We didn't mention thumbelina the character of thumbelina the small person who works at this brothel but he Richter puts the gun on her and he's like where are they and Tony comes out of nowhere kicks the gun out of Richter's hand and Helms you to melee ensues the thumbelina ends up stabbing helm in the stomach killing him love Gets her hands on like a an assault rifle and it's just standing on the bar sort of blasting people I love the bartender. He like grabs grabs a gun He's like thumbelina she jumps up on the bar he hands her the gun He's got a gun and the two of them are just fucking like shooting people just like we practiced. Yeah I love it like yeah, so this is all happening reinforcements are showing up. Yes, and it is a blood bath Yeah, it's an absolute fucking massacre all these people are shot and killed they get called off though when What is his name?
Co-hog co-hagen co-hagen co-hagen makes the call to just shut all the air off in that center. Yeah, it's like I know we'll do Yeah, it's like I like it all right there right so they leave the fans that blow the oxygen in they stop us spin and everyone's like Again, I love this shot of it just like you know The fans are slowing down and everybody's just sort of like slowly walking towards them and watching it happen Yeah, it's like can't do anything about it. Yep. Fuck very stressful very stressful back in the tunnel system.
Yep Quaid Molina what's his name Harry Benny Benny? No, not Benny. Well Benny too, but who's the other guy? Oh?
Not Quato but Quato's like what was guy. Yeah his boy His who's the guy from Ninja Turtles? It's like that. Oh, yeah, crang.
Yeah. Yeah. He is sort of yeah If if Quato is like crang like the brain like this guy is just the big suit. Yes, so this big suit of a man He yeah George that guy's name is George.
Oh great. I think and what's it? What's the actor's name? Do we know that yet?
She's always know all right. It's not my business at this point. Yeah, I can't be concerned myself with such trifling manners He's not even a real guy Marshall Bell That's his name. Marvel Bell.
He's a king alum. He plays. Oh My yeah, he's I stand by me as Will Wheaton's father. Oh my god.
He's like the wrong boy died or whatever That's some bitch also in Starship troopers. Hell yeah So so they are you know started discussing Further it's like we're gonna take you to Quato. Quato can unlock your your memories your memories open your mind quaid That's my quato. That's pretty good quaid.
Uh, Quato Um, yeah, and in a very normal like nobody nobody's ever seen Quato before you know, we don't know who he is like and then George he like takes them into the back room and quades like your quato aren't you and he's like kind of and he pops open his shirt And he's got this guy growing out of his tummy. That's right And he's like actually I'm just kind of a suit to his crang Um, and then Quato is yeah, just this little puppet guy So Quato is very uh, he's like he looks like yeah, he's a little puppet. He looks like a like a Like a he's kind of fetal. Yeah, yeah, uh, little arms weird little face and he says, you know He's sort of like locks eyes with quaid.
He's like open your mind. That's what you're doing Which like you know if we were to believe that this man is having a psychotic break That's not good. You should not open your mind to Quato No But he does and so quato unlocks or possibly implants depending on what you think he is He's uh, we just don't know these memories of alien tech and uh, uh, uh, Cohegan and and his guy's being like they must never find this it's too cool. Yes Yeah, they're these alien artifacts and they can they could change everything They're so fucking cool, man.
You got to check them out and we see this like control panel with an alien shaped hand. Yeah, it's got it's got four four fingers Yeah, one big fat one where the index is yep, um And it's the kind of thing where you put your hand in and something happens. We've all seen it We've seen it a million times. Yeah, so this is the mission now It's I got to find that and liberate the planet.
Yep, but of course, you know that she gets broken up because they they found them They have located quaid and millina and everybody. How did they do it? Uh, of course, Benny Benny Benny the trader. Yes son of a bitch Uh gave up their position They they capture millina and quaid and kill everybody else including quato.
Fuck Quatos dead. The water sense is dead. Maybe maybe we don't know yet. Um, so they bring quaid to cohegan We got we got the the villain sort of like backstory here Uh, he plays a video is like let me I think you should talk to somebody that you trust And again, it's a video of short sinhaker and he's like hey quaid If we're talking again, I guess quatos dead and the mission is complete and you did a great job buddy But i'm gonna want that body back.
Um, it turns out i'm actually a bad guy and i've been working with cohegan this whole time And you're just a fucking patcy and now i like that. Uh, as as cohegan is explaining all this. Yeah, uh quaid is kind of like this is stupid You're obviously making this up as yes. Yes Yeah, he's like He does like give it a uh He like recaves it or he recalls it recalls the entire plan.
He's like you just thought that you could what like give me a new identity Put me on on earth and then I would eventually just lead you to the rebellion It's perfect little plan and then cohegan's like it was perfect rich are almost fucked it up by killing you and then you know You're here and you're fucking things up. I don't know it. Yeah, i'm surprised it works at all But yeah, and then they're like we gotta put you both into the recall machines and give your brains a little scramby Yeah, we're gonna make you we're gonna turn you back into uh Give me some houser houser. We're gonna turn her we're gonna turn malina into your obedient wife Yeah, they're like we're gonna make her your wife and then malina's like i'm gonna break his balls I'm gonna bust his balls.
It's so funny. I love this like this scenario to where it's like the the bad outcome for him is that he's A rich and powerful man with a with a subservient wife totally who breaks his balls with a trad wife. Yeah the trad wife Right Yeah, he's he's created a win win for himself. Yeah, it's all um it's all green lights for me, baby But yes, he you know, they have them strapped into the machine it hurts very badly.
Yes, uh quade being a gigantic Arnold Schwarzenegger type man. However breaks out of his restraints raises a little hell Yeah, he the thing that it's like a arm. Yeah, yeah, the arm thing like he's strapped into this uh like his arms are strapped down and He like he's able to not wiggle out of the like the restraints at all but like break the restraint It's like bolted in right he's able to snap that the bolt And then he uses that bolt to jab somebody in the neck immediately Just killing that guy and then everybody's like they're coming at him with like axes and like crowbars and shit And he's just like he just fucks everybody up real quick. He grabs that one guy like straight through the head with a piece of metal I don't know what it was, but he's just like he kills everybody.
Yep And I love this moment to where he gets malina out of the chair. He's like are you still you and she just kisses him and says Let's you know, let's go do your mission. It's like it is. Yes.
What uh, yeah, there's no difference. There's never any difference Yeah, uh, uh, yeah, no, I'm still me probably and let's let's fucking do this um They go to the reactor and oh no, I'm sorry. They're on their way to the reactor and uh, there's a giant uh drill that's being driven by Benny And Benny is he's gonna drive through them and chop them up with the drill. That's his plan and You know, he's talking shit in there and then quade gets sand on like a little like portable drill.
Yeah And then he's like where the fuck are you? And then he hears it. He's like huh and then the drill is going through the cabin of this uh of this You know bigger drill whatever and and yeah, Schwartz and Eggers line is like Benny screw you Yeah, I mean can't kill someone without you can't send someone across the river sticks without a joke Oh my god. Yeah, what's going on over there dad?
I was shutting the door to the room. Oh, that's all you had I rolled up something rather I didn't know if you were yeah I was I was trying to subtly shut the door but instead I ground it to a I was ground the show to a halt. No screeching halt Uh, so the Benny is dead Quade and Melina they get to the uh the reactor. They're like, you know, we got to turn this fucking thing on Uh, cohegan is like we can't turn it on.
It's alien technology. I don't know what it does We don't know what it does like and Uh quade's just like that's bullshit. You know that it'll like uh if we turn this on, you know, you'll lose control over the planet and whatnot So they're there uh richter is there too with all of his guys now. We got like a big sort of shootout scene with like Quade and Melina versus like 20 or 30 guys.
They got that decoy thing They got that hologram bracelet. That's right and they they fucking use this shit out of it Wasn't it back and forth It's it's it's so fun like it's it's it's such a violent movie and for hovin obviously is like you fucking pigs You love the violence and i'm like I do i'm big and i love violence. Well, it's a stylish and the blood is so bright red That's part of it too is like now 2020 for him like I would fucking kill for a movie to come out like this, you know Uh the first time they use it though is great when they're like there he is and they fucking they shoot him and it doesn't work He doesn't kill him and they're like oh shit he's got hologram and then he just like pops up right behind them And he just mercs like 12 dudes right there. I like when uh He's walking when he comes across a couple guys and the only point there comes and he goes He thought I was the real quade.
Yeah, it's laughing. Yeah, it's very good Um, they kill all of the uh the red shirts essentially and richter all the red army hammerheads Yeah, the red army hammer richter Makes a break for it on an elevator. Yeah, him and quade they're having a fist fight on this elevator and Um, it's like open. It's not even closed at all and then richter like falls off the side He's hanging on he's holding on to quade and he's like there's a uh The elevator platform is about to go into a shoot basically.
Yeah, it's gonna cut off. Yeah fucking quades head And yeah, richter's like if i'm fucking if i'm going that i'm taking you with me, right and he uh The last second quade like pulls him up and then he gets his arms cut off and then he falls to his death Great stuff. Um, right before uh quade and malina. We're going into the machines Cohegan is like oh, uh, i'm having a party later on at my house.
Uh, why don't you guys come by? Um, yeah, bring bring your wife and whatnot and he tells a doctor to remind him when he's done with all of this right and uh As as richter is falling from the elevator quade throws his arms off the side. He's like Yeah, richter's see what the party Silly so from here We make a break for the that room with the handprint thing. Yes that the ignition switch Totally totally and they get there of course and who's there but cohegan.
Oh, this fucking guy Okay cohegan if you ask me i got the with this again. He's got a gun. It's just it's just the two of them now He's like if you do it, it'll actually destroy the planet. It's not actually gonna work You're gonna fuck everything up right dofis right you don't know what you're talking about and he goes You know he like makes a move for me.
He's like, uh, I also have a bomb Yeah, uh, and that's how does uh, I mean it must be cohegan that like shoots out a window or something because Something is broken and they uh or explodes. Oh, that's what is that what it is right like he detonates the bomb And this is like it's so funny how exaggerated the delay is between him pressing the ignition button on the Oh, yeah, bomb switch and she going off like quay does time to run across the room pick it up run back and throw it Yes, and him. I guess the explosion is what breaks the glass, right? Yes.
Yeah, so that breaks the glass again opening up to the vacuum of mars Um cohegan is quickly like sucked out into the open mars Landscape there and he's his head is fucking exploding as i pop it out It's there's like a there's a bit of like a garbage pail kids quality to all this is the best way i can put it Yeah, um, but yeah, his eyes are bulging his tongue is bulging And eventually like the stalks of his eyes are getting pulled out of his head Yeah, the eyes like the eyes themselves go about three inches He does like a like a like a you know, cartoon wolf when he sees a hot lady. Ah, whoo-ga He did he did he did quaid just barely pulls himself to the the handprint thing activates the the reactor And then he and malina gets sucked out into the martian desert as well. They get a bit of an Yeah, they do it too. Um, but luckily quaid was able to start the key on that uh that reactor which activates and Starts making an atmosphere here.
Mm-hmm. And uh just at the right time There's a there's a negative pressure that blows out all the windows in the yep All of the stations. Yeah, yeah, yeah All the sector so the sector where the the brothel was where everybody was slowly dying from uh lack of oxygen The windows are blown out and they're they've all been saved and then uh the air eventually gets to uh quaid and malina and then they they we see a blue sky on mars and They sort of stand there we get like a hero moment where they're standing on this like cliff and this like beautiful blue sky and like red Planet and you know, uh quaid says something like I just had a horrible thought What if this is a dream and then she's like you better kiss me then before you wake up And then it line. Yeah great line.
And then we get like a Solar flare. Yeah, it fades to white But like from the sun and sun like the light just sort of explode like it just sort of goes out and just goes to white And then credits bam told recall Positively lynching positive ending in oblivion like that. Yeah I mean it makes sense that it's all bullshit. It's all dream cooked up by recall Um But what about this?
Okay, I was thinking about it this time right so recalls whole thing is that they implant memories So when you go there, you know, like initially quaid was getting a two-week vacation on mars implanted in there, right? He's not at recall for two weeks. They just implant that memory, right? It takes I assume seconds, right?
Yeah, um So when dr. Edge mar like shows off there and he's like you're actually having a like skits on emblism and yada yada all this shit, right? um How like what's happening there? Because if this is just a if this is all from recall and supposed to be a memory, right?
Or is this Is this what you're saying where like he's spun off and he's doing his own thing now and it's no longer a memory? I don't know it could be it doesn't have to be right. Yeah, that's tricky. That's real tricky stuff Yeah, well the other thing I think about with this is like when you get to the end of it It's like so in the short story.
It's like yeah, I forget if they say in the movie too, but in the short story recall is like You won't remember having been here. You won't know who we are And we send you home with like we like plant Artifacts at your house to convince you that like this I think they I think they do say that in the movie. It's okay. Yeah, um Okay, never mind that because it's gonna be like are you satisfying if you know that it's a memory implant, but then it's like Yeah, this is just like very responsible.
It's like you're gone for two weeks and you go home to your wife Sharon Stone and You're just you're like damn. I wish I was back on Mars with my fake lady. Yeah. Yeah.
I know I mean there is the So when quade is at recall and he's like picking out his perfect woman. Melina's face does pop up on that screen, right? Yeah But also Before he even goes to recall that very first scene in the movie is him on Mars with Melina Yeah, and he says that he's been having dreams about her every you know, it's established that he dreams about her every night And he doesn't know who she is, right? I don't know It's tricky.
This is for hovin guys. He's a slippery guy. All right. It's very weird.
It is a little dream logic. He like uh, yeah, I don't know I mean, that's part of the whole thing is that like yeah, is it real is it not real? What do you want it to be? I like it does make more sense.
I think if it is a dream But also there are things like that right where it's like he was already dreaming of her and you do see her face But it's also like the technician or whatever the doctor as they're going through this process like she says like you're gonna be out Any second so it's like is he already dreaming at that point? That's true. You know, that's true and then oh where in the process this stuff when it's when they're loading up the program or whatever The one like the nerdy guy there. He's like, huh blue skies on Mars.
Huh never heard of that before and you know, and that is how it ends Yeah, so those guys on Mars I was in the trivia section. They're talking about there. There was talks of doing a sequel Uh to this and just doing minority report and so that the premise would be quaid Was not dreaming all that was real right and quaid joins like some sort of a Mars Army police force something or other and he essentially would be the tom crews in the sequel interesting. Yeah, kind of glad they didn't do that I mean, who's uh, was this like Dan O'Bannon wanted to do this?
No, I don't think I don't think it was just something that they were like talking about doing But like especially at this point like Schwarzenegger was like very much against uh sequels even though a year from From this movie you would go on to do one of the most famous sequels of all time Um, it's different but that's when a man with integrity calls upon you that that's a thing like Uh, I just saw some interview with Jesse Ventura, too And he was talking about predator and before predator even came out They were talking to Arnold about doing a sequel and he shot it down. He was like, I don't want to do a sequel to this and I mean it makes sense like you know at a certain point Arnold like just times change the world changes and like the Arnold Arnold like archetype is not what people want to watch anymore, right? Um, so you know, so we just have like whatever 10 or 15 or so years of like Arnold doing like Mostly, you know original one-off kind of movies like this Um, it doesn't really like later on he gets into like, you know terminator seven and all that shit too like just diminishing results every time uh But I think at minority report with Schwarzenegger in it at this time, uh, if it was directed by verhoeven I would definitely be interested in seeing that but if it's I want to know basically anybody else I'm out Oliver home in doing verhoeven doing pre-crime. Yeah, like I'm sure you can mail that The just pallets of squibs getting shipped onto set every day.
Yeah, just like just imagine like yeah Just people being like completely, you know shredded by machine guns before they're able to commit crimes, you know, all right. No, no Now I want to see that movie. Yeah Yeah, what else what else about total recall dan? I think it's great.
I like watching it Uh, I like when um, something action happens and of course there's sex appeal It is it is quite sexy. Um, I love I meant verhoeven just kicks ass. It doesn't he really does the way that there's like, yeah, again, it's it's all so Um condescending, but he's all he's so competent. Yeah, you do get swept up it like it that is what makes it effective is it is like it is true to the genre Yeah, I mean it feels like a perfect genre movie really because like You know a great genre movie or any great genre movie, right?
It's You're presented with like all of these things that you probably haven't seen in other movies before right all of these like weird ideas and stuff But there's an underlying message and the underlying message is usually, you know anti-authoritarian Uh, there's all these like different elements to it and verhoeven is so good and he has such strong opinions about things that he's just like You know, he's just putting this stuff in but it works on the level of like I was like, you know, I was 10 years old when I was watching total recall And I just liked short-senator kickin ass. Yeah, and wasn't picking up on all the you know subtext and whatnot totally Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry to keep harping on it, but like I really am I maybe there's a recency bias also, but like I am so hung up on the ways that this functions like a david lynch movie like it's about it's all about doubles It's basically like it ends basically with death, right? It ends like lost highway or moholland tribe. Yeah, it does Um, you're right.
I mean that that exploding in sun into white screen. Yeah, you know, I think it's in the commentary Where verhoeven is like, you know, it could be you know, just uh, you know, a fade to white or it could be you know, the middle rod going up his No, it's great, right? I mean like, you know, if you want to get real cute with it like he does shove something up his nose Is that like oh he does beginning of the lobotomy process? Maybe say who can say um, but yeah, I mean like yeah This idea of like this like the guy you are versus the idea of yourself.
Oh very lost highway very moholland drive. Yep Mm-hmm Some going on here and again obviously all the like the you know, who's the dreamer, right? Oh god, who is the dreamer? We the viewer are also the dreamer because again, these are movies about movies.
Yeah, it's great pretty cool It's it's you know, it's like a heady idea, right? It's like is he is he awake or is he asleep? But also just like I feel like the the verhoeven really Cranks up the sort of like meta read on this by making it about a movie about action movies and about hollywood movies Um, it makes it very rich very rich. Yeah, absolutely Um, all right anything else before we uh tell people we're doing this Friday No, but before we tell people we're doing this right do we want to go on letterbox.com and no, oh yes Yes, give this a where we try to come up with segments.
Are we not doing that? Are we abandoning our segments? I don't know. What do you want to do Dan?
I don't remember what we called them last. Okay letterbox no segments Zero segments. We'll just five stars. Can we agree?
This is a five star. It's a five star. It's a five star. Give it that heart Uh heart love it.
