Touch Grass | 1 John 1-2:2 | Unchanging Truth
from Bear Creek Community Church · host Bear Creek Community Church
Pastor David Watson opens a brand new eight-week series through 1 John — called Touch Grass — by pointing out something we all experience but rarely stop to examine: every single day, we are fed information. From the myth that 10,000 steps a day is medically proven, to the idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Pastor David shows that many of the "truths" we've absorbed over time were actually born out of Marketing campaigns. The deeper and more sobering point is this — a consistent lie, or even a consistent half-truth, can become a compromised truth. And in a world where 27% of Gen Z learns all of their theology from TikTok and 34% of Christian adults trust AI's spiritual advice more than their pastor's, the stakes of being unrooted in God's Word have never felt higher. Into that cultural moment, the Apostle John writes with the urgency of a man in his nineties who knows the truth is too important to soften. In 1 John 1, John addresses three lies that were eroding the early church — and that are just as alive today: Who is Jesus? Does morality matter? And are we really sinners? Pastor David walks through how John dismantles each one, grounding everything in the declaration of 1 John 1:5 — "God is light and there is absolutely no darkness in Him." That single statement, Pastor David explains, means that God has made Himself fully known to us so that He can be fully known by us. There is no hidden agenda, no secret characteristic, no new Revelation needed. The great application of the chapter, and the heart of the whole sermon, is found in 1 John 1:9 — "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Pastor David closes by challenging the congregation with two questions: Do you know that you know that you know God? And if not, what's holding you back? Because the reason so many of us feel distant from God isn't a lack of information — it's a lack of surrender to the information we already have. The light, Pastor David reminds us, is our friend. And God has made Himself fully known so we would stop hiding and step into it. Learn more about Bear Creek Community Church in Lavon, Texas www.bc3.church
