The Old Testament is full of stories about God’s own people (the Jews) trying to be spiritual, not religious. They were constantly caught by the trap of what they saw happening in people around them; they just couldn’t see the value in following God on His terms. He desired them and had a plan for them that would culminate in the Messiah Jesus. Still, they were too worried about what everyone else had and their spiritual practices. In the end, it ruined them.
