Geelhoed, a professor of surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and founder of Mission to Heal, says the trips have two main goals: providing treatment in the short-term, and building local capacity to provide treatment going forward. But they also achieve something else: all of the 2,300 students who have done Mission to Heal trips have gone back to the communities they visited to continue contributing to improved care.
