Travis Co woman bit by fox with rabies

A fox that attacked a woman after entering her home in northwest Travis County on Aug. 3 tested positive for rabies, Austin Public Health officials said Tuesday. Animal protection officers received reports of the incident around 9:30 p.m. on Pace Bend Road. Officials said a family member killed the fox to stop the attack. Austin Animal Services officials are asking area residents to be alert and careful around raccoons, skunks, coyotes and foxes as authorities canvas the area to determine whether any other people or animals came into contact with the rabid fox. Some signs of rabies include strange behavior, like turning in circles, twitching and foaming at the mouth. Anyone bitten by a wild animal is asked to call animal protection officers immediately at 311 or 512-974-5000, and contact a doctor. Pet owners are also asked to protect their animals by getting them vaccinated, keeping them indoors or restrained and avoiding wild or unknown animals. Learn more about your ad choices.
