The squire, Mr. Trelawney, has purchased a lovely schooner, the Hispaniola, to take Jim and Dr. Livesey to the island on the treasure map. He’s also hired a captain, a cook, and enough men to crew the ship. Jim is so excited to go to sea that he can hardly think of anything else! Already he feels very comfortable and friendly with Long John Silver, the one-legged sailor who is to be the ship’s cook. But he doesn’t feel so kindly toward Captain Smollett, who Jim feels scolds him needlessly and is rather unkind.
