from GDN Archive · host GDN Archive

From September 16, 2020: On the second episode of “Great Dane Nation,” Morten is joined by his longtime friend and Kansas City Chiefs legend Trent Green. But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll) to talk about week 1 of the NFL season. The guys talk about Cam Newton’s big debut for the Patriots, and how different their offense looks without Tom Brady at the helm. Morten also weighs in on the complicated debut of Stephen Gostkowski with the Titans, as he misses four kicks – 3 FGs, 1 PAT – but still manages to hit the game-winner to give Tennessee a week 1 victory in Denver. We then move to our interview with Trent, where he discusses a wide array of topics: getting an NFL season going during a pandemic; working with his new broadcast partner for the 2020 season, Kevin Harlan; how he got started in broadcasting, and why quarterbacks seem to make great color commentators; a hilarious story about Morten calling games for NFL Europe in the early 2000s; being a journeyman quarterback in the early part of his career, as he was cut by the San Diego Chargers and British Columbia Lions (CFL), and sat on the bench in Washington; the unique experience of by a star quarterback at a “basketball school,” as he shared a campus with Bob Knight at Indiana; suffering a devastating knee injury in the final preseason game of the 1999 season, and having to watch his St. Louis Rams have an all-time great season en route to a Super Bowl victory; mentoring a young Kurt Warner during his years in St. Louis; a hilarious story about Morten joining the Chiefs, and Trent reacting to how old Morten was at the time; why the 8-8 Chiefs in 2002 were actually better than the 13-3 Chiefs in 2003; a story about Morten’s first game with the Chiefs, and why it was one of the wildest finishes in either one of their careers; how Dick Vermeil’s emphasis on building team chemistry helped make the Chiefs a force in the early 2000s; how Tony Gonzalez paved the way for the dominant pass-catching tight ends in today’s NFL; Trent’s thoughts on today’s Chiefs, and why we should all pump the breaks on the dynasty tag for now; talking about his sons playing college football – Derek Green at SMU and T.J. Green at Northwestern; and how calling games in empty stadiums is going to be a strange experience. Then, TommyFreezePops is joined by Kevin Rogers for his weekly check-in with the experts from VegasInsider.com. They talk about the dangerous new toy in the potent Kansas City offense is, and how difficult it’s going to be to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. They also talk about Sunday’s star-studded match-up between Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson, the Sunday Night Football game in Seattle between the Seahawks and Patriots, and the Dallas Cowboys’ home opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Finally, we close things out with Morten’s “Game Winner” – a weekly segment where Morten monologues his biggest takeaway of the week. This week, he talks about the incredible resiliency of Trent Green, and how this trait has shaped him both on and off the football field.
