According to statistics by the Depression and Anxiety Support Group (DASG), 24.5% of attempted suicide cases amongst black South Africans have occurred in youths aged 17 and below. A total of 34% of black youths have considered suicide as an option in response to stressful life situations, such as divorce of their parents, conflict and love/relationship problems. The suicide rate for children aged 10-14 years old has more than doubled over the last fifteen years. We spoke to the young people of the Eastern Cape to find the possible causes for this and to Vuvu Somhlahlo from the Masithethe Counseling Services to find out how you can spot and assist someone who is suicidal.Listen to young people sharing their stories on suicide.
