True Ghost Stories: A Playful Ghost Yanked Greg Off His Feet at Soho House in London

from Tell Me A Ghost Story · host Michelle Newman - Tell Me A Ghost Story

Greg was being a grump on his vacation until he got a little push from the other side....This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.Hey it's Michelle, and this one made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it and then made me think about it for days afterward. Greg from Los Angeles called in with a true ghost story from his summer vacation in London that is unlike almost anything else in the Tell Me A Ghost Story archive. This is not a frightening ghost story. It is a playful one. Greg was visiting Soho House Dean Street in London with his husband, one of the most historic and atmospherically loaded buildings in a city that has more haunted real estate per square mile than almost anywhere else on earth. Greg had been feeling off all evening. Something about the energy of the building was registering in a way he could not quite name. Two strangers came and sat at his table uninvited. His vibe, as Greg puts it, was a little off. When it was time to leave, Greg and his husband decided to explore one of the empty floors on their way out. Empty is the key word. The rest of Soho House Dean Street was packed that night. This floor had no one on it at all. Every time Greg turned a corner expecting to find someone he felt the presence of, there was nothing there. The feeling in his stomach said he should not be on that floor. He kept exploring anyway. Then on the stairs he caught a glimpse of shoes behind him. He turned to finally see whoever had been just out of sight all evening. And at that exact moment something yanked his feet out from under him. Both legs flew into the air. His husband watched him go fully horizontal for a second before he dropped. It was, Greg says, like stepping on a cartoon banana peel. He had had one glass of wine. He knows how to walk. Something did that.Greg did not feel afraid. He felt like he had been played with by something that had been dead for a very long time and had decided that his vacation was a good opportunity to have some fun. He left London with a giant bruise on his backside that stayed with him for the rest of the trip and disappeared completely on the flight home to California. Greg took that as a message. Come back. Visit again. Your friend in the stairway will be waiting. One caller. One true ghost story from a historic members club in London where the ghost apparently has opinions about whether visitors are enjoying themselves enough. And a standing invitation to return. Before you go, Greg hosts his own podcast called Miss Thing which you can watch on YouTube at youtube.com/@MissThingPodcast and listen to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
