Trump Admin Proposes Paying Stay-at-Home Parents | US News

The Trump administration is pushing a bold new rule that could revolutionize federal child care by paying married parents to stay home and care for their kids — the first time such support would be offered. Under the proposal, one spouse must work at least 35 hours a week while the other receives funds from the $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund, dubbed “parent-based child care.” Backed by VP JD Vance and echoing Senator Marco Rubio’s past efforts, the plan excludes unmarried couples and single parents — even if they’re working — and caps eligibility at 85% of state median income. Critics warn it risks stretching thin resources, harming single-parent families, and raising legal and fraud concerns due to direct payments to individuals. Though not needing congressional approval, the rule requires White House sign-off and public feedback — and could roll out as early as next year, with roots in Project 2025’s vision of equal treatment for stay-at-home parents.
