Trump Renames Lake Ontario | US News

President Trump shocks the world by renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” via executive order, sparking a diplomatic firestorm with Canada. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford slaps up a giant billboard declaring “Lake Ontario. Now and Always,” mocking the fleeting nature of Trump’s decree. While Canadian leaders like Manitoba’s Wab Kinew joke it’s like an aging rocker playing old hits, historians note the lake’s Indigenous roots — named “oniatarí:io” by the Huron, meaning “lake of shining waters” — which predates both nations. Though Trump’s order only applies to U.S. federal agencies, Canada remains unmoved, underscoring deeper tensions in the U.S.-Canada relationship.
