Hey, from CNN, I'm Josh and Shana, with the 5 things you need to know for Monday, August 11th. Last night, several Palestinian journalists were killed by Israeli strikes. That's according to the UN in a post on X, describing the killings as a, quote, grave breach of international law. One of the journalists was prominent war reporter Anas al-Sharif.
Here's CNN's Nader Bashir. Anas al-Sharif has become a household name for many in the Arabic-speaking world, for many closely following updates on the ground on the situation in Gaza on social media. Anas al-Sharif over the last 22 months has been a constant source of information on the ground across the Gaza ship. At the time of his death, he was, of course, in Gaza City.
He was outside of the previously destroyed Al-Sharif hospital with other journalists, according to the hospital's director, Dr. Mohamed Al-Sharif, in a tent clearly marked as a press tent. In a statement, the Foreign Press Association said it was, quote, outraged by the, quote, targeted killing of Palestinian journalists. Meanwhile, as Israel's plan to expand the war in Gaza receives fierce internal and international criticism, the Israeli Prime Minister's office confirmed that Netanyahu and President Donald Trump spoke yesterday about the plan.
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment. The U.S. is increasingly standing apart from Western allies in its support for Israel, with Australia becoming the latest country to announce it will recognize Palestinian statehood in September. President Donald Trump is set to announce plans to curb crime in Washington, D.C.
later this morning. The sea threatens a federal takeover of the city. The plans call for as many as 130 FBI agents to patrol with D.C. police as part of the increased federal presence, according to one person familiar with the plans.
In a post on Truth Social yesterday, Trump said he will, quote, make our capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before, adding, quote, the homeless have to move out immediately. Trump has claimed crime is rising in the city, something D.C.'s mayor Muriel Bowser denied on MSNBC yesterday. We are not experiencing a spiking crime. In fact, we're watching our crime numbers go down.
Despite not criticizing the president in the interview, the Democrat mayor pushed back on the idea of Trump taking over the police. There are very specific things in our law that would allow the president to have more control over our police department. None of those conditions exist in our city right now. So far, officials have not spoken out against Trump's federal takeover.
Chinese state media is warning against chips made by a U.S. tech company, as the tariff truce between the two countries is set to run out tomorrow. And as CNN's Christy Liu Stout explains, this comes as the White House paced the way for the NVIDIA H20 AI chips to be sold in China through a revenue-sharing agreement. China state media says, no, thank you.
It says that the NVIDIA H20 is not safe for China. A social media account link for the state broadcaster CCTV posted this, quote, when a type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe. As consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it. NVIDIA has countered that, saying its products have no back doors that would allow remote access or control.
A Colorado prison has been evacuated as one of the largest wildfires in state history continues to grow. Officials say more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the Lee fire, which has charred more than 167 square miles across Garfield and Rio Blanco counties, and the blaze is only minimally contained. The Colorado Corrections Department says all 179 prisoners were safely moved from the Rifle Correctional Center over the weekend, quote, out of an abundance of caution. A sports celebration gone wrong.
That's next. A NASCAR driver broke his collarbone celebrating a victory. 19-year-old Connor Zilich is the current NASCAR Xfinity Series points leader and won another race Saturday at Watkins Glen International in New York. He climbed up in a Chevrolet to celebrate, but his foot apparently got caught in the window netting and took a hard fall onto Victory Lane.
In a post on X, Zilich confirmed his collarbone was broken and said he was out of hospital and, quote, getting better already. That's all for now. Our next episode drops at noon Eastern.
