Trump’s Ireland Unity Remark Sparks Debate | Belfast News

Donald Trump stirs controversy in Ireland with bold remarks on Northern Irish unification, declaring it “a very cool thing” that “may as well happen now” during a high-profile visit. Despite past similar comments, his blunt tone and directness—especially amid meetings with Irish leaders—have ignited backlash from unionist figures who insist Northern Ireland’s future belongs to its people. While former ambassador Dan Mulhall notes Trump’s words may not reflect official U.S. policy, they’re expected to create major diplomatic ripples. His brief but charged trip, capped by poetic gifts, has already turned into a flashpoint for political debate across the Atlantic.
