Another interesting development is coming out of Washington involving cannabis and plant-based medicine, and once again, the timing surrounding President Trump and federal marijuana rescheduling is difficult to ignore. In this episode of TDR Cannabis in 5, host Shadd Dales breaks down reporting from Marijuana Moment on the Advancing Botanical Drug Development Act of 2026, introduced by Republican Representatives Lauren Boebert and Derrick Van Orden, which would give newly approved botanical drugs 12 years of market exclusivity, potentially unlocking real investment into cannabis and psychedelic-derived medicine.Joel Stanley, former CEO and co-founder of Charlotte's Web and now CEO of AJNA Biosciences, is developing both a cannabinoid-based treatment and a full-spectrum psilocybin compound entering Phase I trials, and told Psychedelic State(s) of America this kind of exclusivity could bring the same wave of investment to natural medicine that biologics saw years ago. There's a direct connection drawn to what's simultaneously unfolding under the Trump administration, Attorney General Todd Blanche's move placing medical cannabis into Schedule III earlier this year, a federal appeals court rejecting an attempt to block rescheduling just last week, and DEA's own argument that marijuana no longer meets Schedule I criteria.Worth noting, there's no evidence tying this bill directly to another Trump cannabis announcement, but the pattern is hard to ignore, an administration actively moving cannabis toward Schedule III, federal regulators increasingly acknowledging accepted medical use, and now Republican lawmakers building financial incentives for FDA-approved plant medicine, all happening at once.
