Trusting God: God's Clock and Cloud
from Houston's First Baptist Church · host Pastor Gregg Matte
God led the Israelites through the wilderness using a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. When the cloud moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped. This was not a system built around human schedules or preferences. It was a daily, visible reminder that God provides direction, not a timetable, and that His people are called to trust Him with both. The cloud rose upward when it was time to move, not sideways or away, so that even the last person at the back of the camp could see it clearly. That detail matters. God does not lead only the people at the front. He leads everyone, including those who feel the furthest from Him. One of the most practical questions this raises is whether you are a natural stayer or a natural mover. Stayers can confuse comfort with God's will, settling into what is familiar and calling it faithfulness. Movers can confuse restlessness with calling, constantly chasing the next thing without ever putting down roots or finishing what they started. Both tendencies can pull us away from genuine obedience. The ancient Greeks understood this tension through two words for time: chronos, the measurable tick of the clock, and kairos, the appointed moment filled with divine purpose. We have become so obsessed with chronos that we miss the kairos moments happening right in front of us. Following God's leading today looks like four practical steps: getting still before Him without distraction, reading Scripture and letting His Word speak, listening for the peace that the Holy Spirit provides as a guide, and seeking wise counsel alongside prayer. When we do these things consistently, we put ourselves in a position to hear what Isaiah described as a voice behind us saying, this is the way, walk in it. And when we follow that voice, God provides. Not always everything we want, but always everything we need. The wilderness journey was not just about reaching a promised land. It was about being led to a promised Person, Jesus Christ, who meets us in every season and sustains us every step of the way.
