Trusting God: Quit Complaining

from Houston's First Baptist Church · host Pastor Gregg Matte

Life rarely goes the way we plan, and the wilderness seasons can feel confusing, uncomfortable, and even unfair. Numbers 11 pulls back the curtain on what happens in our hearts when the journey gets hard. The Israelites had been freed from slavery in Egypt and were being led clearly by God, with a cloud by day and fire by night. Yet they complained openly, weeping over the food they missed from Egypt. God revealed that their complaint was never really about food. It was about rejecting His leadership. This pattern is not unique to ancient Israel. It shows up in the Garden of Eden, throughout Scripture, and in our own lives today whenever we treat our circumstances as the source of our satisfaction rather than God Himself. Two important distinctions emerge from this passage. The first is the difference between gratitude and contentment. Gratitude reflects our perspective on what we already have, while contentment reflects our perspective on what we do not have. In a world that constantly manufactures dissatisfaction through social media, advertising, and comparison culture, contentment becomes a countercultural act of trust. The second distinction is the difference between complaining and praying. Moses was just as frustrated as the people around him, but he brought his frustration to God rather than airing it about God. Complaining rejects God's leadership, while prayer invites Him to meet us in the middle of our struggle. God answered Moses not by removing the burden but by providing 70 elders to help carry it, a reminder that we were never designed to carry our burdens alone. Where Moses could not carry the weight of the people, Jesus invites all who are weary and heavy laden to come to Him for rest. The wilderness was not a detour from God's plan. It was the path. The discomfort did not mean God had abandoned His people. It meant He was doing His deepest work in them. As Jesus declared in John 6:35, He is the bread of life, and no one who comes to Him will ever go hungry. The manna in the wilderness pointed to something greater, and He alone can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human heart.
