Trusting God: To Heal
from Houston's First Baptist Church · host Pastor Gregg Matte
When sickness enters our lives, the instinct is to ask why. But Scripture redirects that question toward something more important: where do we turn? The Bible offers several reasons why sickness exists in the world, including the brokenness of a fallen creation, the consequences of unwise choices, divine correction, spiritual attack, and God's higher purposes that we may not fully understand this side of heaven. Rather than getting stuck in the why, we are invited to bring our suffering to God, trusting that He is both Comforter and Healer. Removing God from the equation does not remove the sickness. It only removes the One who can bring peace and healing in the middle of it. The story of Miriam in Numbers 12 brings this truth to life. Miriam and Aaron challenged Moses out of pride and jealousy, and God responded with swift correction. Miriam was struck with leprosy, and the entire camp was brought to a standstill. Yet in that moment, Moses, described as the most humble man on earth, did not gloat or walk away. He cried out to God on her behalf with one of the most urgent and tender prayers in all of Scripture. His example shows us what humble intercession looks like, even for those who have wronged us. God heals in at least three ways: instantly, through a process involving medicine and time, and ultimately through the eternal healing of salvation in Jesus Christ. There is no single formula, and God is sovereign in how and when He works. Even the Apostle Paul was told no when he asked for his thorn to be removed, and God's answer was that His grace was sufficient. The call for all of us is to surrender our will to His, to pray with faith and humility, and to intercede for the people around us who are hurting. That posture of trust, even in the face of unanswered questions, is at the heart of what it means to follow a God who heals.
