Try Not To Worry About Worrying - Roundtable

from Psychology to Live By · host Dr. Chris Stevens

The main theme of the podcast is that our genetic code predisposes us to be pretty hypervigilant. But our modern environment is so much safer than our ancestral home for which we were designed! So, we often worry that our worries are in fact disproportionate. The first thing we can do is accept this disproportionality with equanimity, and then we can cultivate more useful mentalities. Questions explored in the Roundtable include: learning to relax a little around worrying about children by understanding that we are even more hardwired to worry about them; the spectrum of worry – that some people worry less, some more, and that this is probably related to individual personality traits such as ‘emotional stability’ and’ openness to experience’; and how amplifying a worry in the mind can mean that we ‘become what we do’ – we create negative self-fulfilling prophecies.
