Tuesdays with Terry: US Strikes, Iran Deal Stalls and A Demand to Unfreeze Funds

The BBC article reports that the U.S. military carried out new strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and boats that were allegedly trying to lay mines. The U.S. said the strikes were done in self‑defense to protect its troops, even though a ceasefire between the two countries is still in place. The strikes come at the same time as ongoing talks to reach a peace deal, and it’s unclear how the attacks will affect those negotiations.  Iran is demanding the immediate release of $12 billion in frozen assets held in Qatar as a precondition for continuing the talks with the United States. The next morning the U.S. carried out targeted strikes on Iranian missile sites and boats in southern Iran, saying actions were necessary to defend its forces during an already fragile ceasefire.
