Well, this could be a controversial one. Let's see if it is. How do you turn your existing podcast into a video podcast? Huh, man.
A lot of opinions here, and you know what opinions are. They're like belly buttons. Everybody's got one. Some of them have lent in them, though.
Well, hello, everybody. Welcome to this edition of the Daily Grateful. We're on Thursdays, and today is Thursday. We talk about podcasting, and I've gotten an email or two asking, what about a video podcast?
Why don't you do a video podcast? You should do a video podcast. All right. I'm sitting here in the wonderful Daily Grateful studio that is in my home, located in my home, in what used to be, whose bedroom was this originally?
I don't remember. I think this was X bedroom originally. I think so. Yes, I think this was X bedroom originally.
And now it is my studio. But anyway, it's a nice studio. I've got all this wonderful audio equipment. I'm very happy, very happy with the way it's laid out.
But I set this studio up to be a video studio. So let's talk about what you're going to need. Now, I'll tell you what I have, and I'll give you other opinions, and there's a ton of other opinions. I have a zoom camera, and I don't know the name of it, but it was the first one that they came out.
And it's just like a little VCR video camera. And I'm looking at it. It's on it. It's right there on a tripod.
And what's good about it is the audio quality. It will plug right in to my audio interface, which is good, which is really, really good. I like that. It also has onboard microphones.
If you want to take it out in the world, and you can plug XLR microphones right into the camera itself. So all of that is good. I like all of that. But any who, there are so many other options.
If you're starting out, you can do a one camera shoot, which by the way, most people do a one camera shoot. Some people do a two camera shoot. If you're going to do a two camera shoot, you're going to need what's called a video switcher. And right here, I'm reaching for it, because I forgot the name of it.
It's on my desk. I just made a noise doing it. I have a RG blank video switcher that will handle up to four different cameras. I'll never use it.
But what a lot of people do is they run it with, you can hear me putting it down on the table. There goes, boom, making noises. We don't have it. We just keep going.
But many people will use one of those for the camera. And then maybe another two for the computer to where you can go to a different page on the computer and throw up graphics or something like that. You can just do automatically while you're doing your video podcast. Some people do that.
I don't know if I will do that or not, but some people will do that. I bought this piece of equipment. I have not used it yet. It is sitting there kind of collecting dust.
I think I'll put it back in the box. So as far as cameras are concerned, a good webcam and I'm talking about a good webcam will work just fine. A good high definition 4K webcam will work fine. Okay, we're not going to talk about audio equipment because I'm thinking you already have a studio set up for audio.
You're going to need proper lighting. Now, I got advice from my son who does, you know, you should do this for a living on lighting. I've got LED lights. I've got two on the side that come down.
One comes down and covers my face. The other one goes up and sends light down to the top of my head. And in front of me, I have a very good high quality ring camera light, which I can put my webcam in. I can actually stick my zoom camera in there and run it out of there without lighting.
So good lighting is important. How much did all this lighting cost me? Not that much. I'm going to guess.
The ring light was $90 and you can get them a lot less, you know, for a lot less money. And the two LED lights and they have stands. They come with stands. I think we're $65 or $70.
I've had them for years. But they're, you know, good high quality and you can do all kinds of things. Now, the next thing you're going to need is video editing software. And, you know, there's a Adobe Premiere Pro, you know, there's DaVinci Resolve.
The Final Cut Pro is, you know, you're going to pay for it a lot of money. DaVinci Resolve, you can get for free. I have friends who are doing this and putting out really professional looking video podcast using a free software. That you can get a paid version of called CapCut.
It's very easy to use. Very, very, very easy to use. So you can do that as well. The other thing you can do is if you're going to have a guest who's not in your studio and I can't have a guest in my studio.
I just don't have a room. Although there's a guy here in Clearwater who has a pretty good video podcast and has a room smaller than this one. And he's running a two camera operation and he has a guest sitting across from him. So it can be done.
I'm just not doing it in here. But the other thing that you could possibly use is something like if you're going to have a guest on video, which is how I would do it. Is you can use Zoom. I wouldn't suggest using Zoom.
There's a couple of commercial ones out there that are very, very good. And what's good about them is that they're leaving the file on your computer and on your guest computer. So those are, you know, that's something that you can look at and you can record it right there. It just comes to you.
It's going to take very little editing and it's going to be very, very good. Now distribution platform, that's the next thing. Where are you going to put this thing? Oh, guess where you're going to put it?
Do I have to like twist your arm and tell you you're going to put it on YouTube? Of course, you're going to put it on YouTube. Number one, it's free. Number one, it's the big one.
The second big one after that. Is going to be Spotify. Spotify is really going big on video and Venmo is out there, but you know, I don't absolutely love it. So those are the things that you're going to need.
And then that's the easy part. Everything that I just said, which was daunting, is easy part. Execution, planning. I come in here and I do a daily podcast and I record it every single day.
I don't record in advance unless I'm going out of town. I tried doing all these things on Saturday. No, they weren't good. So if a video podcast, let me just tell you, Scott Smith has a podcast called the Daily Boost.
It's a nine minute podcast that comes out five days a week, fabulous. I tell you, go watch it. Scott spent a lot of money and decided he was going to do a video podcast. Oh my God, that did not last long.
It did not last long at all because he was doing five days a week. That meant he had to do the podcast while he was being taped doing the podcast and then putting all that together. And gosh, it was just daunting for him. And so he just shut it off because he just said, no, I'm losing quality in that.
So then he grew a beard. I'm saying, Scott's going to hear this. He's not going to be happy with me. He grew a beard.
I think he wanted to show it off. So he went back and did some more of them with the beard. His son shaved the beard off, but he stopped doing the video. Not terribly long after he started doing it with the beard.
By the way, I think it looks better without the beard, but that's just me. But you know, if it's as big as the beard is concerned, it's pretty good. But it's a very difficult job. There are people who do it every week and they're very, very good.
But I'm going to tell you, you can't do it alone. You've got to have a team. You've got to have someone helping you. Scott was doing it alone.
And you could tell. It was very good. Don't get me wrong. It was excellent, as a matter of fact.
But it was, you know, I could just see it in his face, you know, probably by about the fifth or sixth one that I saw, you could tell, I could just tell. And sure enough, later he came out and said, I'm not liking this. I'm not doing it anymore. This is done.
And he does the best. I think Scott has one of the best podcasts in the world. And it's, you know, you can listen to it on Apple podcast or all the other places Monday through Friday. And I suggest that you do it because you will get inspired.
You will get motivated to move. I mean, you know, Scott can get you going. But he did not do well doing a video podcast because it's an enormous amount of work. Will he come back and do it again?
Who knows? He might figure it out. He might put a team together. I don't know.
But he's got the equipment. I've got the equipment, but he's got the equipment. His equipment is better than mine because Scott is like the most wonderful studio. He just, you know, but you can do it.
But I wouldn't suggest doing a daily one. A weekly one. Yes. Most of the ones that I see out on YouTube are weekly podcast and they're quite good.
So if you want to do this. Take the, you know, information that I just gave you and run with it, get more information, really research cameras. That's going to be the big thing. You want to look good.
And if you've already followed my instructions and passed, you're already going to be sounding good because you got a really good microphone. You got an audio interface and you're kicking butt and you're taking names. So you have all of that. I don't know if I'm going to do a video podcast or not.
I got all the equipment. Why not? It's not going to be a daily one. It would have to be a weekly one.
And I'd really, I would need help. And right now I don't have that. But I would need help. I wish my daughter would help me.
But she's not going to. She's got three kids. She's busy. Her own podcast.
