The History of Graceland Graceland's story begins in 1939 when Dr. Thomas Moore and his wife Ruth built the Colonial Revival-style mansion. The property was named after Ruth's aunt, Grace Toof, and originally spanned 500 acres. In 1957, a young Elvis Presley, already a rising star in the music industry, purchased Graceland for $102,500.
