Hi, I'm Holly and I'm Hailey. Welcome to Mountain Mysteries Tales from Appalachia. Hello. Hello friends.
Yeah, it's a it's real stormy here. It's it's a dark and stormy night. It is a dark and stormy night. You brought the weather.
The lightning is flashing, the thunder is booming. It's pretty crazy. It is. There was a tornado warning in the town that I live in the other day.
That was real scary. I'm sure it woke me up from a dead sleep and the alarm went off and I went Amber Alert, which like I should take note of. Yeah, but also it's usually like one that's like three or four counties over. So I'm like, there's not a lot I can do about it right now.
Well, also it's usually like, you know, the dad or the mom. Yeah, you know, kind of thing. So I rolled over expecting it to be an Amber Alert and it was not. It said tornado warning.
See shelter immediately. I mean, that'll do it. So I got up and was headed towards the basement and then it passed over and I didn't need like have to go to the basement, but it was real sketch. Well, in your basement is creepy.
My basement is really scary. I did go down and scope out the basement in case I had to go back because there was another round of storms that came through and there was a lot of water down there. So because our basement floods. I still want to know if there's a body down there.
Oh, 100%. There is. I think absolutely. Before you ever move out of that place, we need to just do some digging.
Yeah, I mean, I don't own the place. I mean, you could rent to own. Yeah, do I really want to own that? Well, I love the location of the house.
The location is stellar. Amazing. I mean, would you buy it? Um, there would have to be a lot of conversation about the entire house has to be rewired because it's not up to code and it's probably a pretty major fire hazard.
But you know, it works for what we need it for right now. And then there's like plaster that is cracking. Okay. And stuff.
So it just again, it works for what we need it to be. It's not perfect. It's but the house was built in like the 50s. Yeah.
So with that character, it's got character. It's got faulty wiring. It's got dead bodies. Yeah, the roof leaks on occasion.
How exciting. There's a guy that my landlord calls and he comes out and fixes random things. So sometimes he rolls up in his pickup truck and he's on my roof. That sounds real shady and you don't know he's coming.
No, not often. He'll just roll. One time he rolled up and cleaned my gutters out. I mean, that's nice.
So yeah, it's still shady. I was like, Hello, his name is Michael. Gotcha. He's a lovely.
He's great. We got a tree fall. He rolled up and cut the tree. Great.
Amazing. And his little pickup truck. I mean, you know, hey, he's here to do work. Is it delightful?
That's great. Yeah, it's also shady. I will say that Haley got to meet Jake, who is the new, uh, gate manager. I don't know what they call these people.
I don't know either. It feels a little more formal than Randy at the guard. It's not really a shack. No, this is more structure.
Yeah, pretty house. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a gatehouse.
Yeah, I could go inside of it if I wanted to. I think he would like throw you down. Okay. There's like an in there's like a bathroom.
Yeah, there is, but I mean, like a vending machine look like going with that like going with that like going in his office. Oh, like into the actual, like, like the little ear. I guess it's probably where people meet like realtors. Yeah, that would be my guess.
Yeah. Because it seemed real nice from the coffee. Look, I got in there. Yeah.
It's so good. The window is looking through the window. It's just peeping through the window. Heavy breathing.
Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah. Um, he is definitely got a whole different vibe than Randy.
Randy, Randy saw things and nom. Um, the Randy had been around the block. Yes. Jake is a little more fancy.
Where's the suit? He looks like the men in black. He kind of does. I keep waiting for him to like pull the shades down.
Um, so I thought his name was Charles. And so anyway, he never corrected me. So I would be like, bye, Charles. Goodbye, ma'am.
Have a nice day. Like same to you, Charles. I mean, introduce himself. I mean, through, I just learned the same as Jake.
Like, well, with the rest of you, I didn't know until someone said, yeah, well, you know, you know, Jake at the gate and I was like, Jake, never one that rhymes with those. It sounds like a children's book. And number two, I was like, Oh, it's not Charles. Pretty soon I'd been buddy with him.
I'd be like, what's that Chuck? You know, I'd be like, who is this lady? What is wrong? And so I feel like I went from Randy, who was like, you know, I've seen things and then to go to this guy.
He did have kind of like a little bit of trauma behind the eyes. Yeah. A lot of trauma. I loved him though.
Oh, same. He was my favorite. I think he like secretly hated me, which is fine, but I love it. I think I finally wore him down with my like repeated attempts at love.
You tried to love Bonham and everyone. And everywhere I could. And he rejected you in every way possible. All the way.
Now, Jake, I'm not, I don't know about Jake yet. I'm not sure how I feel about Jake. He asked me for something that initially like kind of sent me back a little bit. So he said, and who will be coming today?
And I told him your name, and he said, do you have a photograph of this individual? And I was like, that feels shady. And I was like, why? And he was like, well, you know, we just want to make sure that whoever comes through that, you know, matches this person.
I know to show my idea. Well, I know, but you know, it could just be a random ID. Like he was so I'm like, okay, this is very formal. So Haley, I asked her for a pick.
She sends me one that looks like a glamour shot. And now, while I do appreciate a gorgeous headshot, which this truly is, it was outdoors. It's lovely. I think it was one for my engagement.
She's missing is like a boa, like a feather boa, my God. And so I'm like, I can give this to him, but you don't show up to my house like this. I'm currently in full sweats. My hair is in a bun.
And I think I have yesterday's makeup on. Yes. Yeah. I have my hair frid.
And in my, I took my son to the baseball game look. So yeah, but I was like, she's not gonna look like this. So all right. But here you go.
So I don't know. I guess it's just protocol. I'm learning renewed to this neighborhood. Yeah.
You know, I don't want to make waves. It was fine. I mean, he just asked, he was very kind. He just asked for my ID, asking where I was going.
And let me through. There was no pat down, which I kind of missed a little bit. I was ready for that. Or anticipating anticipating.
There was no, I did not have to get out of my car. So not look around my vehicle and then check for bombs like none of that. Bring the dog out. I never do with Randy.
Sometimes I had to get out of the car. Sometimes I didn't. I feel like you're trying to get across the border. I was in the passport.
And what's just crazy because like the neighborhood you live in now is so has so much more like tech and security. Whereas your other neighborhood like yeah, it was gated, but it was just Randy. And he was like so intense about it. Yeah, he was.
And I was like, Randy, this is a lot my guy. We've sort of moved out the stamp in our luxury. So I mean, you pay for it, but it is it is a very nice neighborhood. It's very fancy.
And so I mean, there's like there's like screens in your house about all the cameras outside. It is true. Like I said, I like to watch Haley just drive on in. I mean, I knew you were coming.
Yeah. Still it helps you know to be able to see who's pulling into your driveway. Yeah. So, you know.
Meanwhile, I have faulty wiring in a bid body. Yeah, no, I don't live in a gated community. But you know, we have a lot of them. It's suburban enough that like if somebody to hear me scream the good, would they do anything?
Probably not. No. But I also live with two very large men. Yes.
So. And a dog. And a dog and several firearms. Yes.
I mean, I actually like, I have now I'm really like not comfortable with guns. Yeah. But when the hurricane hit and things are getting a little crazy, I have like a little handgun that's like in my bedside table. So I can I can't fight right.
But who was I? I can't remember. Yeah, during the hurricane. And you know, people were going crazy and they were talking about looting.
And so somebody was like, you need to get yourself a gun. It's like, Oh, that sounds scary. Well, and our thing is like, we we don't have kids that are housed like ever. So it's one of those like, you know, if you were to come up with your kid, they would have to be like, Okay, everybody, let's lock all this stuff up.
We're locking everything. But only we only have I think the one downstairs, remember, they're has several, but they're all locked upstairs as they should be. We are very safe. We are very safe, conscious.
Yeah. In our home. It's safety, conscious, except except for the faulty wiring and dead body. Yeah.
Yeah. And roof and and here's a thought. Here's a thought. If the faulty wiring does catch on fire, the roof leak can put it out.
You know, you know, we put up camera. We have outside cameras, luckily we're pretty safe. You're good. And if someone should perish in your home, well, you've already got like, we've got one grave grave going on down there in the basement, just a row another end.
Why? You know, you know, and the decaying body smell will be pretty wiped out by the smell of burning house. So, I mean, you know, you know, you know, it could be a win-win. It really positive reframe.
Positive reframe. I like that. You're welcome. Yeah.
Cool. Well, that's a story do you have because we only come to you once a month now. We do. So we are going to talk about occult score.
It's my favorite topic. We've talked about this before. Holly, would you have joined a cult back in the day, you think? Which day?
I've had many days. You know, in your teen years, like if you would live a different life. Could you imagine yourself being a cold girl? No.
Could you imagine me being a cold girl? I imagine you being the leader of cult. Oh, thank you. You're welcome.
It's the highest compliment. Wow. I could see you being a leader of cult. You know, like, like a lot of people sort of connect with you because you have that, you know, boots on the ground.
I'm here to help you mentality. Yeah. But then you're also wickedly smart. So what they think is like, oh, yeah, she gets me as you saying, drink that cool, baby.
No, I love a cult. I think it's great. Would you have joined a cult? Absolutely.
I've joined a different route. In my teenage years, like if I had decided that getting good grades was not for me and I'd gotten on drugs 100%, I would have been a cult. And a trap house. And a trap house.
Yeah. Great. Absolutely. Great.
I 100% would have been a cult. I because I would have had that, like, if I did not have the support of people in my life, I could have seen myself easily being like, I'll drink that. You could have had a significantly higher A score. Yeah.
I mean, gosh, you know, but you can't have regrets. No, I know regrets. I'm glad that I had really supportive parents and chose not to do drugs or get aligned with cult or get aligned with a cult. Yeah.
The opportunity just didn't present itself. Me either. If it had, I don't know, who knows RVD. I mean, I think you would be running your own cult.
There would be a documentary airing on Netflix or Hulu right now about me. Am I cold about you and your cold? That's pretty interesting. She started out as a simple teen who grew up following.
I was a weird teen. So maybe, okay, see that. So I found this. I've heard of this cult.
Have you heard of the 12 tribes? No, cults. I mean, the 12 tribes was real, but you know, the 12 tribes, cult, not the cult. Okay.
So I have clearly it's religious. Yes. Yeah. I've heard of it before, but I didn't really fully understand the connection to Appalachia as much.
So what we're going to do is we're going to talk about the origin, history, all that good stuff. We'll call it see where we are on time. Oh, because there might be a part two to this episode. The thunder hit at the perfect time.
Could be a part two. We'll see. We'll see. Okay.
So the 12 tribes can be traced back to what's called the light brigade for Jesus Christ. And it was in 1972, like teenage ministry movement situation. They operated out of quote, the lighthouse is what it was called. And it was a small coffee shop that was actually in the home of Jean Springs and his wife, Marsha.
So it's coffee shop. Coffee shop. Coffee house that's in somebody's house that's in somebody's house that started a ministry situation. So all that is happening.
So the people who are coming to this coffee shop, church ministry situation, then decide like, Hey, let's all live communally and live together. And then they decided, Hey, you know, it would be really cool as if we opened a restaurant also. So it's called the yellow deli. Let's bring in a bell.
Not yet. But all I think is they're like next thing like, Hey, you know, instead of being waiters and waitresses, let's just like have groups X. You know, I think we get there. I mean, I think it's gonna get I hear cold time here.
I mean, I think it's group sex is kind of probably where my mind goes probably where it's been. So they start these restaurants and they're called the yellow deli and there's several of these. I was gonna say he's a plural. Yeah, several of these all from like Tennessee, Georgia, Vermont, like all up and down the Appalachian Trail pretty much like those states.
They also have like a European sector that also it's very it's bizarre. So they open these restaurants. Okay, the food is like pretty good. Oh, great.
To Reddit. I mean, Colts can make some pretty tasty vegetables. So they open all of these restaurants and all of its members are attending like different churches. So people are attending different churches.
This is kind of like the youth group that people go to. Okay, but it's not really like it's not just for like teens. It's like everybody. So it's like the it's like the after church group, or like in between church group.
So people like meet there and they decide, you know, hey, all of us that are attending coming to this yellow deli restaurant to like talk about Jesus or whatever, we're gonna all join the first Presbyterian church. Okay, that was in our area. And they're like, cool, cool. Yeah, let's all go there.
So they go to and this is in Chattanooga, Tennessee, pad area, this is all kind of starting. So sorry, I'm choking over here. Okay, so they decide everybody's gonna join the first Presbyterian church. And they're like, great, we're all gonna be press materials.
So they are now affiliated with first Presbyterian, but friction is starting to be like cause. There's there's some friction that's beginning. And it's not just the group sex. It's not the group sex.
We're not there yet. Oh, friction is pause there. Yes, got to use lube. Evening calls.
So they are going here, friction is starting to come up because the members of the light brigade, which is what they call themselves, is inviting literally anybody is willing to come with them to church, which is like lots of people kind of, you know, the idea of church or should be, but not in 1975, it was not. So the light brigade people, they are inviting anybody and everybody. So they're inviting black people. They're inviting people of lower socioeconomic status.
They're inviting literally anybody that will show up and come with them. This was not really cool in 1975 with the first Presbyterian church. They were like, maybe not. We still want to be a little segregated here.
You know, it's what it is. So they're like, not great. On January 12, 1975, the group goes to first Presbyterian for a service and they find out that the service has been canceled due to the Super Bowl. It's Super Bowl Sunday.
I'm sorry. Jesus doesn't work today. It's Super Bowl Sunday. We're not doing it.
So like, okay, well, that's cool. So if you want to close for the Super Bowl, we're going to start our own church and they started the Vine Christian Community Church. Okay. So so bizarre.
So this church now decides, hey, we're going to go around and plant different churches. Like we're going to start all these different churches in different areas because we want this with the Medtogro. So to do that, they open yellow delis everywhere. So they open it with the restaurants.
So they open them in Dalton and Trenton, Georgia, Mintone, Alabama, and Dayton, Tissy. Quick question. Yes. How are they funding all this?
I don't know. I don't know. Because I mean, it's not like you can just quickly just open a place. I mean, you don't have some money.
I guess some of them had money. I don't know. Okay. It's very strange.
So they were opening all these yellow deli restaurants that are also acting as like church meeting spaces. Okay. Yeah. So they start kind of withdrawing from religious mainstream ideas.
And there starts to be a like, people start thinking, mmm, this is a little culty. Like this is feeling a little bit like a cold. So they begin to hold their own services, which they call critical mass in warmer park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While they're there, they are appointing elders.
They are baptizing people outside of any denominational authority. So because you know, each like section of Christianity kind of has its own original adaptism. Yeah, there's a sprinkle. There's a dunk.
There's a we're dunkers. No, I come from a sprinkle. Come from a sprinkle. I come from a sprinkle of oil.
Yeah, we're a we're somebody puts a cloth every face and dunk you down in the water and then lift you back up. But see, you know, they could use that in the cult when they want to get rid of somebody like, oh, yeah, they're like, let's baptize Johnny here. And then Johnny's fighting and they're like, don't fight the Lord, Johnny. Johnny.
Yeah. Until Johnny just I was fighting. I was baptizing a little baptismal. Oh, clog up the face and wow.
That feels intense. It's fine. I was an infant and, you know, yeah, yeah. Other son, Holy Spirit.
Yeah, there you go. So these people, I don't know what they're doing. I don't know if they're dunking. I bet they're dunking.
I bet they're dunking. Because that's a lot more, you know, kind of brings an audience, you know, and that's what they want. Yeah, yeah. So they are, they're baptizing anybody and everybody.
They're starting to kind of have a deterioration in relationship between their group and the religious community of Chattanooga. And they actually attracted the attention of the parents committee to free our children from the Children of God, which is another cult. I knew someone who was the general. And the Citizens Freedom Foundation who was the first ones to kind of characterize the group as a cult.
And they described the leader Springs as a co-leader. So starting in the summer of 1776. 1976? Yep, 1976.
Wow. I can tell you that. The vice-antennial. 1976.
Anti-cultist Ted Patrick begins a series of deep programings, which is what people kind of have to go through when they leave a cult to come back to reality. It's sought to convince these 12 tribe members to leave the community. The group pretty much ignored them and all the negative press and were like, you know, whatever we're going to continue doing what we're doing and they continue to operate their businesses. Thanks for your help.
You want to sandwich? Yeah. They opened the Arab Poggis cafe and a second yellow deli in downtown Chattanooga. So now downtown Chattanooga has got two yellow delis and another cafe situation.
Could you imagine if you really went there and you like the food like on your lunch break and you're like, yeah, I know they're a brain wash cold, but you know, the ham sandwiches are delicious. That's a great soup. Exactly. Exactly.
Have you tried the tomato basil? Just saying. So in 1978, Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga and Covenant College in Georgia near Chattanooga issued edicts banning students from going to the other deli. Like it was that intense.
They were like, literally, don't go there. Like, this is a cult. You shouldn't go there. Hey, Lee and I go there and, you know, we got our sandwich were free.
Now we had to have sex with a leader, but dude, I mean, it's a great sandwich and it was free. Oh, my lord. Okay. So top of the morning to you, Haley.
Okay, sorry. In 1978, they got an invitation from a small church in island pond Vermont for their leader, sprigs to minister there. They're like, hey, will you come up here and spread your word? They originally declined the offer.
Smart. But the group began moving kind of in stages to this rural town in Vermont and named the church there the Northeast Kingdom Community Church. There's a lot of community churches happening. It's a lot.
Okay. It's a lot. So there's some more deprogramming going on. It's not going great.
No, because they're expanding. They continue moving. They actually closed down all of the yellow bellies and associated churches except for the one in Dalton. And they later reveals that the group was in a lot of debt.
And then they moved, they closed adult in church and then moved all the members to Vermont. Everybody's in Vermont now. Wow. What a change.
Georgia to Vermont. They decided, hey, we're going to go to Vermont. So they moved to Vermont. There's all this economic hardship.
They have a lot of the members leave. The Citizens' Freedom Foundation kind of follows them to Vermont and they're like, hey, this is a cult. You don't want this. You don't want this.
Drop the sandwich and come with me. Leave. So they've been making a lot of allegations of mind control and that kind of abuse in Tennessee. But now they start making accusations of child abuse.
So in 1983, there were charges brought against Charles Eddie Wiseman, who was an elder in the group for misdemeanor simple assault and combined with multiple child custody cases. So with that, they are able to get a search warrant. And on June 22, 1984, the Vermont State Police and the Vermont Social Rehabilitation Services, which is like their Department of Social Services or Health and Human Services, they go in and they take 112 children from this church. 40 cases are dismissed because parents refuse to give the names of their children.
So they just dismissed 40 of the cases. And due to what finally comes out to be this big misunderstanding of events and the members start to kind of form these relationships with neighbors and they're like, hey, this really isn't like we're not as bad at saying we are all the stuff. The other child's cases get dropped. So all the cases are dropped.
Seems like something straight went down for sure. Two months after the initial raid, the case against the original guy Wiseman falls apart after the main witness recants and says that he was actually under duress from the anti-cult movement. So they put him up to making all these allegations is what he's claiming. So the cases dropped, the judge ruled that he'd been denied right to speedy trial.
What's interesting though, is his public defender named Jean Slonko, who had been present during the raid. Like he'd go on, I don't know why the public defender was at the raid. That seems weird, but was at the raid. Was his public defender for trial?
Didn't even let go to trial. Everything got dropped. This public defender later joins 12 tribes and Mary is Wiseman. Here's the thing.
I mean, you come for the sandwich and you stay. Apparently for the love. Stay for the love. That's right.
Yeah. Wow. Yeah, it's a lot. They're good.
They're really good. Yeah. So the group then becomes a little, they become really isolated after leaving Chattanooga. So they're like, realizing now after this allegation and everything that maybe being isolated isn't such a great look.
So they start trying to build more formal relationships with outsiders and the local authorities. And that seems to be kind of successful. Like they are all kind of just living. Everybody's like, yeah, those are just weird people.
But they're like friends. Yeah. They're like whatever. That's being nice in the sandbox.
It's just really weird. Yeah. Where things start to kind of go a little wild is in 1985, as you know, things do. That was a wild year for me.
So Jean Spriggs, who was the leader, he receives a revelation about the book of Daniel. Okay. He believes that his community will bring about the return of Jesus. The group starts to believe that it was like the spiritual Israel.
And about this time the community begins referring to Jesus by his likely name in Hebrew according to them as Yeshua. The members of the community started being given Hebrew names. So they started naming each other in Hebrew. The group also starts to incorporate Israeli dancing and folk music into their traditions.
And in the summer of 1997, the entire community in island pond was baptized in a ritual that a particular scholar wrote, quote, wash themselves from the perceived flaws of contemporary Christianity. So we're diving into real like fundamentalist stuff, I would say, at this point is where it's going to start getting a little wild. Here's a question. What would your Hebrew name be?
Did you be like Miriam or, you know, I don't know for something like crazy, probably something wild. I would too. Yeah. Something cool.
So I'm going to chat GBT. Okay. A good Hebrew name for you and I. Okay.
I'll get back to you at the end of the podcast. Okay. Well, we're there. Oh, we've arrived.
Because I am going to do a part two. Yeah. Because things are starting to get a little wild and it's going to get even crazier. Yeah.
And then we're going to talk a little bit about some of the encounters that people have had. What do you mean? Oh, encounters with them. With this poll.
Yeah. Yeah. So I mean, we have a plethora of it. Really, you could be I like yay, or yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yay, yay.
Yeah. Yeah. Mountain goat. That's powerful.
You could be Esther. That means star. Yeah. Shira means song.
Tamar means date palm tree. I love it. But Zahava means golden. That's lovely.
I actually really. Yeah. I mean, really. I want something for you though that feels, I know, just more intense.
Yeah. Yeah. We'll come up with one. Okay.
Maybe in the next episode. Yeah. Maybe we'll have figured out our our cult Hebrew names. Love that.
What's your favorite sandwich? We'll have them make it. Oh, yeah. You know, I really like like an Italian type sandwich.
I'm so I'm running you some salami. That's good. I love the creasy. Oh, that's a pretty safe.
Yeah. But you know what? I was actually looking for a Reuben because that's in line with like Israel and you know, so there's a lot of wild stuff going on over there right now. So yeah, so sandwich, we got our Hebrew name.
You know, what would you do in the cult? Like what would your job be? Probably some form of like body disposal. I could see that.
Like if somebody killed somebody, I get called. I also get called to like handle the dead body. I get called for cleanup duty. So we come as a pair.
Oh, yeah. I mean, because that's how we came in the young, we came together, we came together for the sandwich and we stayed for the murder. Yeah. We didn't commit it.
Right. We're just, you know, it's there after the fact. It's alleged that someone else has, you know, been the perpetrator and we simply are handling the situation you are removing and disposing of the body and I am taking care of the crime scene. Yeah.
I mean, they need us in this cult. Yeah, for sure. And I'm one of the wives of the cult leader. Oh, nice.
Yeah. I'm like, like 96. So I'm like low on the totem pole. But at the same time, he loves me.
I see him, you know, once every three months. It's great. Yeah, I was, um, I was cut from that position. Pretty quick missionary.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's why you were cut.
Yeah. Yeah. You got to get cowgirl. You know what I'm saying?
I just can do it. Well, that's why you're not as liked as I am in the cult. That's why they call me when there's a dead body. Exactly.
They're like, we're just going to have to take care of the dead body. But I get to clean up the blood. Whoa. I know.
Watch out. And I'm moving in on wife number 95. So, I got a Miriam. Watch your back, Jack, and take you down.
Oh my God. Me and Zebadiah. He is hot. Elderly.
Elderly. He's elderly. You know, he's got arthritis. Althritic hands, but it's fine.
It doesn't matter. He knows how to use them. You know what I'm saying? That's what's in matters.
You can make a sandwich. Nobody's but this. Okay. We got it.
What? We got to go. This is amazing. Okay.
