June 4th, 2024, not White Sands in New Mexico. Welcome to... And Twin Peaks. Dan and Rob, Twin Peaks the return.

Part eight, got a light. It sort of has a double meaning, when you say. I suppose. The light of the cigarette and the blinding light of...

Well, you might say the beginning of the end of the world. Yeah. Or the beginning of some crazy as New World, man. Yeah.

World's collide, man. This is sort of, we were talking about Furiosa right before we started recording. This is like Bob's Furiosa. This is kind of like Bob's Furiosa, yeah.

Yeah. If Furiosa was burned out of like a... A crucible of Hellfire? Hellfire crucible.

Some entity within vomiting up. A bunch of stuff. We'll get into it, alright guys. That's all gonna make sense in about 60 minutes.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the Antwin Peaks promise is you'll leave here with no... Questions about the show. Right.

We'll explain it all to you. Yeah, this is like a big episode. I remember when this, I wasn't watching the show as it aired, but I remember when this aired, like the internet, Twitter, like probably the AV club at the time was like, you know, everybody was just like, heads exploding like, what the fuck? This is the best thing I've ever seen.

It's really good? Yeah. I mean like the CG stuff is a little shoddy in spots. You know what?

It doesn't. You're right. It's time to watch this and watching it this time around, it didn't bother me at all. This I think is gonna benefit from the passage of time in the way that we were talking about Inland Empire being shot on a handheld camcorder.

It's like the farther you get from that being like close to the peak of the technology, at least like for TV, you know, on their budget or whatever, the better it's gonna look, it's just gonna feel more stylized. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So like that being said, I compared this to, we were texting about it.

I said, this is like on par for me with the Stargate in 2001. Like it's as sort of like visceral and like profound. More so I think because it's like it's something that actually happened. Well sure.

Yeah. I was thinking about that to what you said about being like the birth of like the Star Child at the end of 2001. This is kind of like, this is almost the anti 2001 in that like it's this destructive thing. And it's also birthing something sort of evil and destructive.

Yeah. Even though with you know, 2001 being like, you know, birthing some sort of a, you know, evolved whatever, we don't have to get into all the mechanics of 2001. But something, you know, a better, a higher life form of human being. And then this is like we're giving birth to Bob.

Right. It's like, this is like a war on humanity. Yeah. It's like, instead of humanity evolving, humanity metastasizes.

Yes. I guess tumor would have been better than a war. But yeah, I like that a lot. So the opposite of the number 2001 is 1945.

There you go. Simple as. Yeah. I mean, really just like a breathtaking kind of sequence, especially like, oh man, the, so I remember a few episodes ago when we were first, when Cooper was still in like elsewhere that like other dimension, you said the, maybe with the benefit of hindsight.

No, I'm seeing it again. But like you, when you saw the purple ocean, you were like, that is terrifying to me. Yeah. And like, I still think it's kind of beautiful.

I mean, it is beautiful, but also fast. I guess it's scary in the way that the real ocean is scary too. Yeah. And also like the sequence of the cameras zooming in through that like sort of metallic, like, it almost looks like a mercury, like liquid mercury zooming in through that orb at like an incredible speed to get to that other place.

That was like, that was like, sort of just like the scale that it implies. And like, yeah, this is something that I got to let you know I've been watching ahead. I can't help myself. No, I actually, I know you've been watching it.

No, you saw this. I can't help myself. I know. But this is something I think that gets kind of recreated later to is like, people are walking from place to place in these other dimensions.

Like when Cooper and Cooper's doppelganger go through that like long dark corridor to get to that like motel that where Jeffries is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

So that well, I mean, it's crazy to be watching a recap about a show from this long ago. I mean, it's only out knowing what seven years ago. It's not that long ago. I guess I'm just watching for the first time.

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Anyway, you know what I mean? Yeah.

The so I just, I didn't know there was a term for this, but I just heard this term like a few weeks ago, the liminal spaces, which like liminal spaces are like these in between sort of places between like dimensions. There's like there are videos online of like, you know, people, you know, digitally creating like these back rooms or like it'll be this empty, what looks like a shopping mall, but it looks like it just goes on forever and like every turn there's just more to it, that kind of thing. Yeah. The liminal space thing really sort of gives me the heebie-jeebies.

It's a bit stressful, isn't it? It really is. Yeah. This is it forever and I'm lost.

This is it forever and it's just like a space without purpose also. Yeah. Right. No discernible purpose.

And if you've never seen a liminal space, Rob, I think that's good. It's like an in-between kind of thing. So for the listener who's not familiar, just sort of like imagine if William Mackenzie, Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland and Jake Hartwright were a space of physical space. I don't know who those people are.

Those are the characters from the British sitcom The In Between. Okay. Okay. All right.

That'll do. That'll do. Every week, every week you show back up. I'll never understand.

Not a choice I'd make for myself, but you do you, brother. Before we get into all this, all the black and white business, all of this creepy stuff from the past, we got to deal with some stuff from the present. All right. Yes, we do.

That's the other thing about this episode, man. It's just like every bit of it hits so fucking hard. Yeah. Yeah.

Like you get so much. You do get a lot. Yeah. I mean, it's a big, it's just a big episode.

Even the musical act is probably the biggest name. That appears on the show, you know? Yeah. The Nine Inch Nails.

I love that. I think it really feels too like Dave calling his shot by being like, I'm going to put the fucking Nine Inch Nails on. And then I'm going to hit you with like the most haunting piece of music you've ever heard right after that. Like the most powerful sequence ever put on TV.

Yes. Yeah. So the show opens with, well, we pick up right after Rey and Mr. C have left prison.

We saw them in the last episode. They got a car. They, the warden got them out because Mr. C had some sort of a, some black male them somehow knows something we don't know yet.

Something about a strawberry. Something about a strawberry and a dog leg, et cetera, et cetera. See someone on the Patreon was talking about that. The dog leg?

The strawberry. I did. They said it was a term for some sort of unsavory thing. I wish I could remember.

Well, well, moving right along though. So they're driving. Rey is the one driving. It was, I believe, Corey M was the one who said something I learned recently, a strawberry is a slang term for a full time crack whore.

Interesting. Which I was unaware and I want to know how Corey found that out. Yeah. Sounds like Corey is hanging out on the wrong side of town.

That's right. Corey, I'm only going to say this once. Get it together. You got, you got to get your life together.

Sort your life out. All right. Do you think it works the other way too? Could I add a farmer's market?

Ask for a basket of CWs? Let me get a basket of crack whores over there. What? What the hell did you just say to me?

Crazy farmer. So they're, wow, I shouldn't have gone to the crazy farmer. These people are rational. I got to go to the normal one.

I went to the crazy farmer's market. These guys are crazy over here. All right. So Rey and Mr.

C, they're driving. Mr. C says that they put three trackers on the car that they're driving. He has some sort of magic phone or something that like, yeah, well, he's also magic.

Like he's tapped into electricity, right? So part of me is just like, is this a normal phone, but in his hand sort of like when Harold Potter holds a certain stick, suddenly it's a very powerful device. I don't know. I don't know anything about it.

Is this show as good as Harry Potter? This show? Yeah. Or Twin Peaks, or sorry?

Twin Peaks, or sorry? Oh. Well, I mean, yeah, they're very, they're very different though and their attitudes towards trans people. Yeah.

No, you're right. And also like one of them is super cool about it. The other one, no chill whatsoever. Yeah.

Actually, actually Harry Potter, they're not doing any other groups of people of favor. What other groups? Well, you know about the bankers, the goblins. Oh, no.

I'm not. Yeah. I'm not. Look it up.

I don't look it up. It's not good at all. I can only imagine what you're talking about. Goblins, maybe golems.

Is that we're kind of getting out there? Maybe some like, are they are they wattos? They're wattos. Yeah.

Yeah. All right. Yeah. Not a Harry Potter guy doing read the books, dancing movies.

Don't know anything about that boy. What he's been up to. It's for babies. So, right?

Yeah. I was very into the books when I was a baby. Right. Yeah.

There's like a, you remember growing up, you'd like read a, I don't know if you had this experience. I was a voracious reader. Well, yes, of course. For example, when I was like super, super young, I loved Captain Underpants.

Dave Pilky's classic series. I have like a distinct memory and I had this with a Harry Potter book like years later, I like read it really fast. Like I just got through it really fast. I was like, I'm too old for you.

This isn't capturing me in the same way. I'm just plowing through it. Right. I need, I need Moby Dick.

Give me that dick. I walked up to my mother. I said, mother, I'm ready for the dick. I need some of that Herman Melville dick.

Happy pride, y'all. So yeah, this is not a Harry Potter cast. We're not getting into all of everything that I guess is wrong with those books and those movies. But the boy who lived, go live somewhere else.

You only appear. Ron Weasley, not weaseling your way into our podcast. But I do want to just say really quick that I am a Hufflepuff. You seem more like a Gryffindor, Dan.

No, I'm a Slytherin. No, all right. I'm conniving. These are the only Harry Potter words that I know just through like Osmosis.

Do you know what it means to be a Gryffindor Hufflepuff? Of course not. No. Or Slytherin.

Slytherin's are very ambitious. Gryffindor is their like basically like dumb jock with a heart of gold, like charismatic, pretty good at stuff. But like there's basically like it's I would say it's the most neoliberal. It's like it's like competent without any real ability, I guess.

And then was the other one Hufflepuff? That's the dud one. That's like the Ralph Wigam house. No, no.

You put yourself selected to be media. I just got self-oamed right there. Damn. You're just like Chris Evans.

In that movie we watched. Oh, got cell phone to sell. OK. All right, that'll do.

Don't take a sip. No, I'm taking sips. I was in a fluctuation. Yeah.

I got to have a drink with a straw from now on. Yeah. It takes a big sip and then it goes. Yeah, there he goes.

I'm like the tin man with his oil cane. Hey, speaking of the Wizard of Oz. So we're back in it. We're back in it.

So they're driving along. Mr. C says there are three trackers. So he disables them.

And then I guess he enters in the license plate of a box truck that's in front of them. So I guess that the tracker will now follow the box truck. They have the. I don't really understand how that works.

Me either. And out of all the things in this episode to not understand, that's probably the biggest one. Yeah. They're driving.

And so it's like Ray is like, hey, I hope you're not sore about me running off like that. But whatever. I give some bullshit excuse. He asks about Daria.

And Mr. C says Daria is waiting for us to call her when we're someplace safe, which we know is not true. Daria is dead. She is dead.

And then it raised like. So where are we going? And Mr. C says, well, I bet you'd like to go to that farm.

And he's like, Ray's like, well, I was kind of thinking that. And we are heading in that direction. So they're heading to a farm. We don't know anything about that yet.

They pull off the highway. They're going through like back roads. And Ray says, hey, I've got to pull over. I've got to take a leak.

And he's like, go for it. Gets out. Mr. C opens up the glove compartment and sees the gun.

That's obviously in there. Yes. There's a gun that's obviously in there. It checks it.

Make sure it's loaded. And he gets out. And he says no, he doesn't check that it's loaded. He does.

He does. OK. No, I took note. He definitely does check to see if it's loaded.

Something with the gun. I don't know if the hammer is like filed down or what. But it does definitely look loaded. That's so smart, isn't it?

You got to be so smart to be a crime dog. It'd be a crime dog. Well, I guess McGruff is a crime dog. OK, a criminal.

Well, say. A crime hound like you're you can't get enough of this stuff. You can't get enough of what I mean. Yeah, a crime hound.

So Mr. C walks up behind Ray and he's like, he's got the gun, whatever. And Ray is like Ray turns around. He also has a gun.

And Mr. C pulls a trigger. It just clicks. Nothing happens.

And Ray calls him like, or he says like a trick to you or whatever. And then he shoots him. Ray shoots Mr. C dead.

And then he's just standing there like standing over the dead body. And then something very normal happens. Bunch of little guys show up. A bunch of dirty woodsmen show up.

Yeah, these are the guys we've been seeing. We saw one in Matthew in the cell next to Matthew Lillard at the frickin' place. We saw one in the hallways of the morgue. Morgue, whatever that building would be.

So these guys, they're around. They are around. We've seen them before. And they come out and they're like, it's like they're spirits or something.

They're sort of transparent. And they, you know, there's a bunch of them. And some of them are like dancing around in a circle, around Ray and the body. And Ray and they are freaked out by all of this.

Sure. As you would be. And they're sort of like to borrow the parlance of a horny internet user re-ranging his guts. Ha ha ha ha ha.

He is having his gut rearranged by, now you compared these dirty fuckers. Yup. To the flying monkeys? Yeah, so there's that scene in the Wizard of Oz when the flying monkeys are attacking the scarecrow specifically.

And they're like tearing him apart and like ripping up his stuff. Well, they took his arm and they threw it over there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then they took my leg and they threw it over there.

Man, that was the funniest thing you could possibly say in like the 1930s. Oh man, it fucking blew everybody's mind. People were dying of laughter. Literally dying of laughter.

But yeah, that's what they've seen in the Wizard of Oz monkeys are like tearing the scarecrow apart. And this, it seems like they're all, they're putting them back together. And they're just like, it's so weird. Like it and not clear how it's all sort of happening, which I like, you know?

It's just like three or four of these like woodsman spirit ghosts or whatever. And they're just sort of like messing around with him. And like smearing his blood. Yeah, right?

And this happens again, this happens a second time later on. And the same thing, it seems like part of it is smearing blood on his face. That aspect of it reminds me almost like a birthing thing, right where he's like coming out covered in fluids. Sure, yeah, yeah.

But like what a, I don't know, you see this sort of thing in other shows and movies and stuff. Like a character who just like can't be killed. And like a lot of times it's depicted as like the blood getting sucked back in and just the wound closing up with CJ. And this is so much, I'm sure it's so much cheaper and so much more interesting looking.

Like obviously you need to set up these dirty fuckers. Like not every show's gonna have these dirty fuckers, but it's just like, it's such a, it's such a more compelling way to show this. Very unique way to show that this guy can't be killed by normal means. Another important thing here is as they are rearranging his guts, they also, we see a big black orb with Bob's face on it.

And it sort of looks at Ray and Ray looks at it. And he's like, I don't like that. I don't like that one bit. So he leaves and he's driving and he places a call and describes what happens.

Like I killed him, I think he had some help which is such a funny way of putting it. He's like, I think I killed him, but he had some help. So I'm not sure. And he's like, but I'm going to the, going to the place.

And if he follows me there, I'll be ready for him. And who's he's heading to on that phone call? What? None other than FBI agent, Philip Jeffery.

That's right. He's talking to Jeffery's on the phone. I'm so interested, even knowing where it all goes, I'm so interested in like Jeffery's story in all of this. Yeah.

It's, you know, obviously like the depiction of Jeffery's that's coming down the road is a consequence of, you know, certain factors outside the production's control. Yeah, yeah. But that does make me curious to know that like, what was the vision originally? What happened?

What was he just always going to be a tea kettle in a motel room? Maybe, maybe, maybe never know what these guys. Yeah. So, so that is a right.

Right. Ray talks to Jeffery's tells what happened. And from there, we're about 10 minutes into the episode. From there, we go to the roadhouse where the MC introduces the nine inch nails and they play the song She's Gone.

Or She's Gone Away. And yeah, the song. They're so good, dude. Are you a nine inch nails guy?

Have you ever gotten into it? No, that's the thing. And every time I hear a nine inch nail song, I'm like, this is the coolest thing I've ever heard. I think it's, I do think there's like a way people who don't know about nine inch nails think about them as just being like the cheapest version of themselves.

How's that? What do you mean? The cheapest version of themselves? Like, if you're not into it and you don't understand it, it just seems like, oh, they're just like dark for its own sake, like that kind of thing.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Like any other sort of, you know, I kind of feel like what you're describing is kind of like Marilyn Manson. I like 1 million percent. Yeah.

I think like, oh, it's just this guy who's like his shtick is that he's like super dark and whatever else. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah.

Exactly. But like, I mean, first of all, nine inch nails musically so much more interesting. I mean, extremely talented. Like Trent Resnick, obviously, like the dude, him and Atticus Ross, who is in the band, he plays the bass.

The two of them. Is he like the original basses? Like, is he always been in the band? OK.

No, no, no, no. The band, it's funny. If you go on their Wikipedia and look under like past members, there's like 50 people. It's like the wind and fire.

Exactly. The only person I think that's really stuck around the whole time is Trent Resnick. It's really his project or whatever. Well, that's cool that he found another guy who's him.

Yeah, I know. It's even just like looking at him. I'm like, oh, you're like another sturdy ass, like Raven Black haired music freak. Trent Resnick is like, you go back and he's, you know, it's a lot of electronic music or whatever.

His personal life, like early on, like total mess, heroin addict for decades, you know, just really like dark kind of shit. And he cleans up his act. He's married to she's in this band here in the in the episode. She's like one of the backup singers.

And he's like, now he's like, I mean, really, for the past like 15 or more years, him and Atticus Ross have been like scoring movies and then he makes albums on the side. He's doing great. I just watched him. What is the challengers, right?

Oh, yeah, they he did. Or they did that one, right? They did score for that one. Any fucking rules.

It's so good. They're so talented. That movie is really good too. I would recommend that.

I haven't seen it. I it's I don't love who don't you love? Look like what I mean. Oh, yeah, yeah, I gotcha.

I mean, but I think I've only seen the one we watched Bones and All. That's actually same. OK, I don't love Bones and All. Yeah, yeah.

But maybe I'll maybe I'll check it out. I mean, it's a super horny movie, but not graphic at all. It's just like all told through churros. Basically, yeah, it's all these tennis matches.

They're sort of a it's kind of sort of an analogy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're I think they're not actually playing tennis if you know what I mean. Oh, that's interesting. But all that said, the nine.

Yeah, I also yeah. The song also is kind of long. It is. It's like six minutes of experience or something.

Yeah, pretty long song. And it's like, I think the placement of it in the episode. Yeah. And like when you realize that they're not going to cut to a scene at like a table or something, which is something that's happened before, I think it kind of lets you know something is up.

Also, it's the way it's shot like the lighting is so much more intense and elaborate. I think then the acts that have come before it totally. It's more of a little performance that they more of a show. There's like there's strobing lights and stuff, which we will see more of later on in the episode.

Yup. And lyrically, do we think there's anything any relevance to the song she's going away? Yeah. I don't know what lyrics.

He said she's gone away. Well, do you think that there is? Well, let's go through it. There's not a lot of lyrics here.

Yeah. So verse one, you dig in places till your fingers bleed, spread the infection where you spill your seed. God, they really just got their finger. All right.

You dig in places till your fingers bleed, spread the infection where you spill your seed. I can't remember what she came here for. I can't remember much of anything anymore. Then the chorus is just she's gone away.

Verse two, a little mouth opened up inside. I was watching on the day she died. We keep licking while the skin turns black, cut along the length, but you can't get the feeling back. So obviously like plot wise, like a mouth opening up, that that's going to come up.

But in general, it's just about like someone dying, it sounds like. And the sort of like on the toothpaste being out of the tube on that, which is what this whole episode's about. It's about a loss of life, a loss of innocence. It is about digging in places till your fingers, or till it's covered in blood.

They're covered in blood. Yeah, a lot of that going around. Yeah. So yeah.

So that's all I would say a nice teaser for after the break, wouldn't you? I would agree with you. So guys, we're going to take a break. You know, if you want to listen to the rest of the episode, head on over to patreon.com slash kimmypod, you sign up for $5 a month, you get one free week, you can test it out.

If you like it, you stick around. If you don't, no harm, no foul, baby. Well, we'll be devastated, but that's it. Yeah.

That actually doesn't matter. You won't feel that at all. And you know what, since your boy is unemployed, why don't you think about signing up? Why don't you kick in a few shekels for Robbie?

Otherwise it could go on with me. Frankly, I'm going to need to borrow some money from you guys to pay him. No, boy. Oh boy.

Yeah, we'll talk, we'll go in deep on this atomic bomb sequence. Yeah. We'll talk about 10 years later in New Mexico. Let's go.

All right. Well, we'll talk about the water, the well. No, boy. And what have you.

Sure. All right. We'll be right back guys. Bye.
