Typee Chapter 11

from The Herman Melville Library · host Herman Melville

In which the narrator, bedridden and restless, reflects on his perilous situation in the valley of Typee, where he encounters a dignified warrior chief adorned with elaborate tattooing and a venerable native healer who administers a harsh remedy to his suffering limb. As he is introduced to his household, he paints a vivid picture of the native habitation and its inhabitants, from the faithful and grotesquely tattooed servant Kory-Kory to the graceful and scarcely adorned Fayaway, whose natural beauty and gentle manners contrast with the savage surroundings.
