U.S. Leads International Coalition to Endorse Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science

from The White House In Audio · host Instaread Podcast

At the 23rd Annual STS Forum in Kyoto, the United States and 16 other countries endorsed the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science, a joint commitment to accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen global research systems. The vision focuses on three main priorities: Modernizing research institutions: Encourage flexible funding models, including long-term grants, rapid funding, prizes, and new institutional structures, while using metascience to improve how research is organized and funded. Using super intelligence (SI) for science: Expand access to advanced AI and computing tools, autonomous experimentation, scientific data, and experimental facilities to accelerate research and enable new forms of scientific inquiry. Developing scientific talent: Invest in students and early-career researchers, provide greater freedom for ambitious research, and expand hands-on technical training, fellowships, doctoral programs, and research partnerships. The initiative was led by Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. It aligns with the U.S. report Science: A New Golden Age, which proposes major changes to how the United States conducts, funds, and evaluates research. Overall: The Kyoto Vision calls for international cooperation to combine AI/super intelligence, innovative research institutions, flexible funding, and investment in scientific talent to usher in a new era of faster and more ambitious scientific discovery. Countries endorsing it: Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, UAE, UK, and the United States.
