I ought to just get rid of these. No, no. I should get rid of these. Why do I take my...
I'm the one who goes over the episode details. I know. And now you have notes too? I only took them.
How long have you had notes? Have you had notes since our first podcast? I only took them because I was just trying to make sure that we were thorough. Not because you're new to the rest of the world.
We are thorough. Substandard. You didn't think my notes were thorough. Or beyond ridiculous.
I just wanted to be thorough. I feel like... I mean, look, our notes are the same length. We probably...
But my notes have more time. And I've hated the same important events. No. No, I actually probably got the most important things.
It's okay though. Go ahead and... No, my notes are so hurt. Honestly, dude.
I'm supposed to be the one that recalls the episode. I know. And then you add comment as necessary. You weren't really supposed to see these.
You weren't really supposed to see them notes. They were supposed to. I know they're on a music stand. I know they're on a music stand.
Oh my God, dude. You just screw this podcast up every week. Every week. You've got to talk into the mic, dude.
You're talking to the mic. I'm talking into the mic. Well, okay. All right.
Where's the box set? Where's your secret? Look, look, I got something to make it up for you. Look at what my lovely wife gave me.
Hey, I'm Lindsay. Silver. It says, Jack Orbs, you saw it. What is that?
A pigeon on it there? No. It's a bird of some variety. I'm sure native to North America, but I'm not exactly sure.
Oh, it's an eagle. Oh, okay. Did she really get you this? Yes.
Yes. Stop. Stop adjusting my mic. Oh my gosh, I can hear myself just fine.
It's not about you. It's about the list. Oh my God. Anyway, so there's another prop for us.
What do you think? Since you hide all the props, where's our other prop? Okay. Where is it?
I'm looking around and I'll see you. Here's this one's loud. There it is. It should be center stage every day.
Okay, it's lovely since you nice. I'm gonna drop this just bit Okay, because it's in my face. It's supposed to be it's a microphone. Don't like it there.
Okay, so welcome everyone. Hi This is a Josh and Sarah from the jag podcast we should we really should apologize Sarah was sick for like three weeks in a row I know it was a 48 hour we lost two weekends because of her no Don't talk over me. I will Go ahead. I'm living you some airspace.
Oh, I appreciate it. Okay. Say your piece. I will I was I apologize listeners I was ill I was on my deathbed literally I thought I was gonna die it was a 48 hour thing I don't need the small violins.
I don't need it I just wanted to say I'm sorry and I just couldn't do it I couldn't do it, but Josh decides to take a family fun cruise for three weeks with his family so that delayed the podcast I'm sorry to all of you who just were waiting, but you were sick that weekend breath. I was not I was like one weekend Well anyway, so we are here we're here. We're here. No, and me no no I'm next to me dude.
I make the podcast That's not just a listener's no I'd wake him up because he was passed out next to his son I was not I was like what is really relaxing my I'm sorry do not take 35 minutes They do if you gotta put your heart and your soul into these things and that's what I'm doing so I went upstairs and Feel free to criticize if you want with a little guy, okay, jeez. All right, so you're awake now. You're good. I'm good.
I'm ready I'm talk about this what Oh, we do we break down the episodes episode three. Okay. Yeah, it was so good Um, gosh, I'm so excited finally a good episode something that I would watch and say this is a damn good show. Oh boy, okay?
All right, so this is a episode three. Yeah desert son erd October 7th trying to sound a little bit more excited. You sound like Walter. All right, sorry This is episode three desert son erd October 7th 1995.
Yeah, yeah, okay So with that bit of excitement, I'll turn it over to you for really you're gonna turn over me while you have notes there I have just take the listeners through the episode and I'll just add my comments are the corrections Shall we say to yours as you go along? But I'm sure yours are fine. They're typically okay, so let's go ahead. Yeah, all right.
Let's talk about it So we are coming from you live from 29 palms US Marine Corps base in California I don't know if they really filmed it there. I'm starting to think they didn't because if they did I never want to be stationed at 29 palms What a crappy place every building every hanger every ounce of ground was crap No, the commissary look pretty nice. No, you don't see that. Yes.
You did in the episode because lieutenant Gomez or whatever his name was No, that's where they met him in the parking. No. All right. We should go ahead.
So 29 palms were in the middle of a training exercise with the Marines I think it was a desert Sandstorm you know what well I was trying to read ahead because I anyway Yeah, and so you're looking at this this humby There's a lieutenant in it and somebody else is driving and the lieutenant's doing a call for fire on an enemy position And the person that's that's relaying the information from the lieutenant Relays it to the fire control center to captain captain or lieutenant I'm really sure captain read I think anyway While the radio was having problems from the lieutenant on scene So he relays through another lieutenant lieutenant boom who relays to the fire control center the fire control center that initiates fire Where the guys like No, here you go again. Okay, here we go again. Let's talk. Let's just what if our listeners didn't watch lost now They're like I'm sure they did why are we talking about?
Well, I'm just because every time I hear a boom I'm just like boo because it lost but go ahead all right, so it was booing in lost. What's the ball guy? No, it was not the ball guy. You don't even know anyway So we're doing a call for fire and the fire control center Here's the coordinates.
They input the coordinates into their large cannon thing and They shoot it and all of a sudden the poor little Marines on the ground of which I think there are seven are like Incoming and they just get taken out all seven Marines, so it becomes a they don't die friendly fire well several of them do I think there's only four that no they actually go to the hospital. No, not all Josh You know here we freaking go. What do your notes say? Do your notes break it down?
Let me see they do they basically say they do not You're our injured opening scene firing sequence where group of Marines gets shot with artillery. Okay, I covered that part Harman make me general butler and learn general Thomas Williams former comment on a Marine Corps It's a no different than mine notes giving my notes your notes aren't even in complete sentences I know because I only need bullets to remember Okay, so anyway, let's at least agree that many are injured well many are injured, but several are dead Josh are you Problem tonight. You're not even focused. I am focused Like a forward hand do you're not okay, so lieutenant Williams calls for fire on his own recon team via lieutenant boom You better repeat the coordinates to the fire control center somebody somewhere messed up because several Marines are dead others are in critical condition And we got to call a lawyer so who comes to 29 palms with a bag this time I might add I Don't know yeah, okay none other than the harm very good looking and harm and rapped and Meg Austin Who you know what?
I'm gonna say I loved her in this episode. Are you serious? I did I thought she was cute? I loved her little round glasses.
I loved her relationship with all of the north I thought she reminded me of Meg Ryan in Top Gun. She was cute. She was that cute I had an interesting not really but a teacher when I was in sixth grade named well, don't say Mrs. No neck I Had a different teacher.
We'll just leave a name out. No, he was he was Shall we say a monotone kind of speaker and that's what lieutenant Austin is is just a very monotone I find it funny that you say that because you're always a proponent of hers And I'm always the one who's bashing on her, but I actually thought she was great this episode And I really liked her. Okay, so who was your teacher because we went to the school? I'm not gonna say because this podcast is broadcast worldwide as you know and you know So anyway press on so they show up and they I'm so curious now.
Okay. Yeah, I'll tell you after I'll tell you after I'll I probably don't know I probably don't know anyway Yeah, so they show up harm has a double bag this time Which is a good thing actually because I think he's in 29 palms for a total of 48 hours and in that 48 hours He probably would have had to go through about four different sets of khakis because of all the different events that he had to go through While still on that TV why it was harrowing harrowing, but at least he got to pack his stuff So they get to 29 palms they run into a wonderful Gunnery sergeant and I don't know who played him, but I really liked him the gunny you mean sergeant major The guy with the way here. Yeah, yeah, he was a sergeant major and he was played by this dude named Dale died I really liked him. I'm cool character.
He is a you know believe it or not a war hero He in real life served in Vietnam. He earned a bronze star for valor and three purple hearts as a marine I believe so as a marine, but he also appeared in other things like band of brothers saving private Ryan under siege and under siege to JFK There was a wait wait wait there was an under siege to yeah, well to the first one was so bad with a shot No, it wasn't van dammit was Steven Seagal Steven Seagal it was Steven Seagal and the first one was on the mighty mo and I didn't even know they made a second one That was funny because the first one was awful, but anyway So this guy's been known far and wide as are some other actors in this episode which will which will which will I'm telling you I'm so excited that we can have this podcast and talk about episode three Which I loved and it finally made me say if I was a new watcher of jag it finally made me think you know what this show Don't be a jackass fine viewer this show might actually have a chance of making it big This is a great show. This was a great episode. Okay, okay great characters in it.
Okay, okay Okay, well, let's keep going with the plot. Okay, so so harm comes out with lieutenant colonel or lieutenant Austin. I'm sorry Are you talking am I talking who's telling the story here? I I think it's my job.
I'm just you were asking me about my notes I don't I don't like it. I'm unhappy that you take okay So harm shows up with a tenant Austin and they talked to a major general butler Marine Corps And he's like I square this away by the way the kid who did the call for fire Initially before it was related to another lieutenant was the son of a former comment out of the Marine Corps So you're here to do an investigation. We want you to be impartial But you need to get it over with completely impartial, but you need to get it over with immediately So harm and lieutenant Austin again who I loved in this episode and I'm not just saying that I really thought she was great I'm like yes, sir. Yes, sir.
You know, we'll take care of it Another lovely part of this episode was that Oliver North was in it as a cameo and I love to see him And he wasn't doing things quite in the lines either in the lines Josh Well, we haven't even got to how they got to see Ali Have we no I thought I was gonna bring the listeners in to Known for his tremendous role in Iran Contra Among other things to include his most recent stints on the Fox News channel You're stupid You just so like I don't even understand I try to you just Know so lieutenant Williams who called in the call for fire on On the fire that eventually kills these many Marines in several are in critical condition Clearly, you know, he's in a he's in a state right now Although his character doesn't sound even remotely concerned about the plight of these Marines that he's called in really a friendly firearm So we have to figure out or jag jag has to figure out between harm and lieutenant Austin, you know What really happened here did this lieutenant? Was he drunk at the time? Did he just make a mistake was the mistake for the call for fire coordinates made by the guy who relayed the message lieutenant? Boone Boone who's a By all accounts of stellar marine What exactly happened here?
Well, the thing about it is is lieutenant Williams admits that he's the one that General Butler says hey go talk to captain Reed and then go talk to he does and can I just say captain Reed what a dick Just a douche bag I didn't like him from the beginning and for the if you haven't had a chance to see the episode Captain Reed is the guy at the fire control center I think he was prior enlisted based on his age and and based on major general Butler's comments about him later in the episode Which were he's an experienced guy has been around the Marine Corps for a long time. He's proud to be a captain But but it's his guys that ultimately fired the the death knell for these other Marines And I just thought that guy was just such a jerk and he told all of his young Marines to not take part in any interview from jag Unless he was present which is obstruction obstruction of justice Well, so blatant the thing I didn't like the writing around captain Reed Why because it was like every time he talked he was had to say fire and so we'd be like well He was the fire control center fire the well there is an active exercise going on fire And it was everything every two seconds. He was saying fire and I'm like dude, man. Just have a conversation What I think fire he can't he's a fire control officer.
Well, I mean it just fire is in the It's like us having a compiler see and then I just keep talking I understand that if you are a fire control officer, you know what? I didn't understand hearing protection clearly not a mandatory thing in the 1990s. No that cannons weren't as loud back then They're talking like there's nothing going on. There's this huge like how it's her right there just Only like a hundred five millimeters.
I'm not that big dude. It was big. Well, it was big. Okay Also, anyway They go talk to him and then they go back and then they talk to Lieutenant Williams after they're done with Reed Yeah, well, yeah, and but Lieutenant Williams doesn't have a lot to say but the thing that this is where the episode kind of goes off the rails for me It never went off the rails dude.
This was a great. This wasn't any it should have been an Emmy nominated episode It was great. Well shouldn't he have had a lawyer with him who read the lieutenant which lieutenant if he didn't know Dude the guy that supposedly messed everything up Williams Williams shouldn't have had a lawyer there on his side while he was testifying or saying things to Harm and he has a skater's no cuz harm is impartial. No, he didn't need his own lawyer harm is impartial.
Okay, and so is Lieutenant Austin. No, he was just giving a statement. I You know what I didn't like so lieutenant Williams as we were saying He's looking like the guy that's a fault and I think he even admits to being at fault in this episode Like hey, I did it. Yep.
I must have been drunk. I don't know about on me Which infuriates harm because harm's like dude. Do you realize there's Marines dying in the freaking hospital here because of your dumb? No, no, it infuriated his dad because this is a classic Former comment on the bar.
Well, but you didn't you kind of took a long way around well I mean we do okay, so infuriated his his father former comment on the Marine Corps Who's like hey? How can you be like this when there's all these guys laid up in the hospital because of you know at the time? but I think the father was kind of Expecting that his son would be a screw up like that. I think his father will here's the background If you haven't watched the episode is that the former comment on the Marine Corps had two sons one Jay Williams Who is the one that's accused of this friendly fire incident and killing these Marines and injuring like four others?
And then Mike I think was the other one who was decorated two times for his service in the Gulf War Died a hero and I think Lieutenant Williams always felt like one because my dad is the comment on the Marines I have to one join the Marines and two I have to live up to this legacy that my brother left Which who can ever live up to that not me? I don't even want to be in the Marine Corps, but his dad's there and it just causes It was the classic way expectations of the father my son having to or thinking that he needs to try to live up with that Yeah, so so I found myself in a couple points in the episode feeling bad for Lieutenant Williams and thinking you know Maybe this guy really didn't do anything wrong and maybe he is covering up for his friend as we go through the episode We see that the recording of the radio communications from that incident have been stand by degauced is the word degauced as in Erased whatever happened to the recording of the incident. No one can find it Yeah, did you buy that? I could have by that someone would have tampered with with the quote unquote Somebody did somebody did but What's her name Tina at the bar?
Oh, no not Jesus Meg Austin was like wow, it's It clearly hasn't just been erased because if it was I could recover it well She is talented she proved that on the house which means nobody can recover it which kind of leads to the whole Oliver No, I know I did love that so yeah I mean where do you go when you need a specialist on radio communications that have been erased Meg Austin can't figure it out and I was trying to all of her north plays a role in this She meets him in the middle of the desert and I think he is he but is he her brother? No, no, he's like a family friend in the episode I think he's supposed to be her brother no because he's like your dad would be so proud no or no She didn't say your dad. He said dad would be so proud No, and then as harm sitting in the little humvee he's like I and I'm gonna take on your boyfriend No, and Meg's like well I think I wanted to think that because then he'll be envious or some ridiculous thing like that It's just it was it was poor writing but I thought Oliver North did a good job which fast forwards us way into the future of the episode Well, we're really trying to say is that we've got to get a hold of what was on tape and is now not on tape Meg knows a guy Oliver North whether he's related or not. I think he was supposed to be a brother or an uncle or something No, clearly he's gonna break the law for some cute lawyer No, either way, so this is again where it goes off the rails because when she goes and talks to him He's like oh, yes, I do know all about this classified satellite capability to yeah But you don't just talk about it in the open dude.
They were in the middle of a desert matter no He even said who's gonna listen in there in the middle of a live fire exercise my goodness and the whole desert thing What a crock that was why don't you just go to the dang Starbucks downtown? I mean It was so good I love how she looked at him through her spectacles and she's only like 20 feet away I mean Jones comes down the road and runs him over Jones isn't going to I thought it made perfect sense and I absolutely loved it I love the cameo from Oliver North. You know he does show back up later in the season He does he really I thought he did a great job. I really did I thought he didn't do a bad job But the circumstances and how they put him out there would just be on well I thought I was kind of weird too why he would be on a training range, but then I thought well he does work for the government Well, I mean I worked for the government, but I just didn't randomly appear no But maybe it's all about lieutenant's problem on a training.
That's why I think they were family. No, I think they were family Trust me. I think they were family anyway. It doesn't matter.
She gets the information She needs for them. She gets the tape that's got the actual discussions on it from the actual radio calls from the call for fire In it you can clearly hear lieutenant Williams relay the firing coordinates to lieutenant Boone who then relays the Incorrect coordinates to the fire control center the fire control center led by Read fires as they hear it from lieutenant Boone and these Marines are dead so There you have it and it feels to me like okay, we've solved the episode except except you Gonna screw it up while I screwed up. No, you didn't screw up. You just skipped around So so leading into them getting everything they need from from all over north Prior to that Boone had basically or Williams had set himself up as like this guy that was taking the fall He was a ball guy.
He admitted he's like yeah, I probably did calling the numbers wrong I thought that up so poor Boone was like well my career is basically and Boone is this up-and-coming Marine officer the Former comment on the Marine Corps is like boom is the only guy that I never liked he was the only one of Jay's friends that I ever Accepted yeah, he's up and coming in the Marine Corps, but now it looks like jeez. Yeah, boom Did you seriously? Through this up and even goes to captain read he's like I'm only gonna ever make captain out of this yeah and captain He's like dude. I'm proud to be a captain the Marine Corps What the hell are you bitching about why you little ass yeah?
But then the truth does come out exactly that way what I liked about this episode is that I honestly thought for the first 40 minutes That it really was lieutenant Williams because he's just this arrogant ass. I thought you know what it was you that did it Yeah, excuse me. Well, I mean I've had a lot of I Geez we did it into the mic Anyway, did I say I thought it was lieutenant Boone I thought it was lieutenant No, I thought it was lieutenant Boone the whole time. I didn't think it was Williams.
I was surprised when It was lieutenant Williams who did it after we heard the final recording What I what I liked was because you're making me go through this episode We're compartmentalizing it all and it's you're taking me backwards and forwards and I think the listeners might be lost But Meg and harm go out to the investigation site. Do you remember this and the sign is knocked down? Oh, yeah, this is another ridiculous sign is knocked down that says you're in a live fire area fires own in a free fire zone and Harman and I go I think we take a right turn here And they take the right turn and then the camera pans out and you see the falling over whether it was weather No, no, maybe it high winds out And the sign is laying there that says live fire area this way and of course That's the way that they just went so they ended up in the live fire area I mean there's bombs dropping everywhere arms running around all dirty and sweaty and That's getting hot in here as I think about that scene. Oh my god Man that's sweaty and khakis So let's let's let's recapge.
So we end up with lieutenant Williams basically being discovered as a guy that actually did Screw up Almost seems like no, but he admitted it and then when it turned out he could go in for manslaughter because he was under the influence Then he's like well, I got a frame. I I got enough to frame him He's just got to say look dude. Yeah, I'm gonna go screw this crap up and then all he comes in gets the real recorded version from some odd satellite and We find out indeed it was I think all of her north worked Probably one of the intelligence agencies. Well, that's a brilliant observation Josh.
I was trying to figure out Well, I don't know why specifically he would have worked for to be able to get that kind it's satellite communications. He was high up somewhere but anyways, so He provides the confirming evidence that lieutenant Williams is the man and of the hour who did indeed do the dirty Deane right so then Meg and harm and we're still in the middle of this operation sandbag operation Last sand blast we're still in the middle of this but boom who's like holy crap man I thought I was the one that's heard this up the whole time and and my guys are laying in the hospital Diane and now you have proof that it's actually lieutenant Williams that did this we're gonna go out and see him We're gonna go out and see him now So out they go to the range during this live-fire exercise Boone harm and Meg Austin and they go out there They know sooner stop the Humvee that they're in and boom takes a beeline to lieutenant Williams grabs him out of the old Humvee throws him to the ground and he's like you son of a bitch you freaking guy and and I'm and and as a Watcher as a viewer I'm like oh my gosh. This episode is awesome and Williams pulls out a gun I was like holy crap. No, well, I mean it was great so unexpected so You know I was unexpected because it was so Let's know no first of all he's like you think you think I'm gonna turn myself in what Mexico is so close So, you know what I did I looked up damn Mexico from 29 poms on my day in Google Maps and it's over three hours Way He could have done it he could have made the break for it and then the part I really liked is he's like Tell Tina I'll be waiting for in Mexico Barkeeper Oh my gosh, so he puts a bullet in a boon And then he puts a bullet in the radio and he's like well harm You're gonna have to drive him back now because can't call for a helicopter or whatever and Harm doesn't take it harm does not take that as an answer so Lieutenant Austin who I love how she's sprung into action immediate for self-adbody care for lieutenant Boone and the enlisted guy in the truck is like I can help however I can and but harm is like hell no dude you're asking going to Mexico I am going to catch you in that home beat so Williams is driving off this harm Is is well?
I mean I get that way sometimes when I get excited harm goes running after boot or run after lieutenant Williams in the Humvee catches up to him he's ass over teet cattle as they're going through the Yeah, as he's as they're going through the free fire zone the free fire zone and Harm gets into the back of the the Humvee and he's trying to subdue lieutenant Williams who's on the run Obviously to Mexico and there's a live fire. It's just bombs going off everywhere. But you but you they're not like wait wait How they go? But you but you okay?
They were and blowing stuff up. It was wicked cool And but it's it's one of the bombs hits the near the Humvee it rolls and harm of course is unscathed Still sweaty and khaki as he is and he is whole really like holding lieutenant Williams in his arms Oh, no, this part's a little bit sad and lieutenant Williams in his dying breaths with blood Spittled from his little mouth says why me? Yeah, and then he dies. No, it really wasn't thatic and I thought you know It is kind of sad.
I mean he had a bright he had all these expectations that he was gonna be the stellar marine Yes, he did he resented in the core But his whole he did resent being in the core But the expectation was that he was gonna be this great marine like his dead brother And he never lived up to that and he could never live up to that Man, I swear you wrote read a different book than I did I mean he didn't even want to be there in the first place. He was only there because of his dad this you the whole father son element What was a major part of this episode? Okay, I don't deny that he didn't want anything to do with the core But he was where he was and he wasn't trying to do a good job. He was trying to be probably didn't want to kill a bunch of But he really did seem a bit heartless when it came to the fact that they were dying and one of them at last words Or why me?
I mean I think because at that point I think he realized what a douche bag He was dying. I think he did realize what a douche bag He was and I think harm realized that too Which is why in the closing scene of the episode when the former comment on the Marine Corps getting ready to leave and harm and Meg Austin are standing there on the flight line and The former comment on the Marines says something kind of stupid like oh, I always knew he was a screw up No, no, he said something like general Butler was trying to tell me he was so ashamed of what he did Yes, blah blah blah. He's like but I think he's full of it and I want you to give it to me straight something like that Something like that. Anyway, so he turns to go get on his helicopter and harm Salute smartly and says sir I just think it's important for you to know that the last words that lieutenant Williams said where that he was sorry and The former comment on the Marines father of lieutenant Williams turns to harm and says well, I don't sound like anything My son would say and harm stifles a smile because of course, it's not anything that is somewhat of said and harm Well, that's what he said sir.
No, no, no, no, no, no the dumb comment on he's like well, thank you son and then Meg is like I did it harm's like well, that's the way I heard it Absolutely loved it. I thought I'm telling you no, I thought this episode was great this episode was really the start of when jag became Oh, you are just it's no, this is just again another week episode I thought the writing was terrible or the acting he would have I think he's on it because he's like hey There's a good pro military show on which which I could completely understand He's gonna support it. Did you think it was ironic though that all he north plays a guy in this episode who skirts the legal lines? Just a bit No, no, he didn't do anything wrong.
No, oh Following orders, he was following orders. Oh in the real world when you're talking about skirting things He was just a cog in the machine Okay So yeah, it was okay. It was it was so far from Graduated into a show that's worthy of no, I wouldn't call it the graduation episode I think it was I would completely disagree with you there I don't I you know it hurts me that you say that because usually you think I bash on it a little too much And I thought lieutenant Austin's character was very strong. I like to turn this episode on it.
Oh, I'm so excited about the party I mean it was just party No, that's a poor example because I thought she was cute Monotone no, she was not she was totally into it all episode and had it not been for her They wouldn't have got the real recording Williams would have taken the fall for Boone Williams wouldn't have really taken a ball No, Boone would have taken the fall no because Boone is the guy who the radio transmission finally proved the boom was the guy that screwed up No, I'm Williams. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah So what yeah the radio transmission proved Williams was the one that screwed it up. You're right.
Yeah, yeah Yes, I am right. Yep. So yeah, it was okay I mean it was better than the first two and you know It was far superior but we still haven't you know You say a graduation episode I would tend to disagree because you don't even have you still don't even know any of the other cast and again Do we need to know but I'm just saying in terms of the context of where the episode where the show is heading all the only person that survives Into the future series of jag is harm. So it can't really be the jet Though every one of these episodes has predominally occurred where the crime scene happened Well, we really haven't seen no, I know but we really haven't seen headquarters.
We really haven't got to know the people at the jag office Well, thank you for making my point. So we can't really be the graduation episode where it becomes good No, well, I just felt like this episode seemed like I could I don't know and the chemistry between harm and I honestly have to say I like Catherine Bell and I thought her chemistry with David James Elliot was really good way better so when I watched this first Opening season and I really only watched the first three episodes Initially, I was I just didn't want to like lieutenant Austin I didn't want to like her because I really liked Catherine Bell But in this episode I felt like there was chemistry I felt like they were it was cute. It made sense. It was an episode that I felt like could really happen in real life And I liked it and I thought the acting was good.
I thought that the sergeant major guy was cool I thought Oliver North was cool. I thought the guy that the general butler was really good. They had a The communications officer who we never even touched on lieutenant a hurrah Almost I don't know what his name was but he was played by Walt Goggins who's been in like a million things the shield justified Predators to hateful eight all kinds of other movies. Have you seen the hateful eight?
Well, of course. Have you? Yeah, I own it I never watched it. Oh, is it good?
Yeah, okay. Yeah, good writing quentarentine. Oh, I know he's great I know I just haven't ever watched it and I we've owned it. It's still in the cell phone.
Yeah, terrible Okay, we'll check it out. Anyway, so you have a lot of people on this episode that actually went on too much bigger and better He was in first contact. He got borgified. Yeah, I got borg and then remember in the captain Picard is like Delighted what we drawn here.
No father Such a classic scene breaks all the little ships. I love it. I love first contact. What a great movie It was probably the best of the TNG so I would say in terms of redeeming qualities for the episode for me It would be all the actors they would have gone on too much bigger a better thing They can't really argue that they did go on a bigger better things, but they were also good in jag I didn't think it was a cheese ball episode as Kind of the first two work.
Yeah, the first two. I mean you didn't have comic book I on the seven all that so it was better than that For sure. It was really good. Here's what I didn't like I I didn't like the jag theme music playing as harm and lieutenant Williams Lieutenant Williams is making the break for the Mexican border and they've got that Well, harm's ass over to you know, you know, I'm being trying to get this freaking lieutenant Williams to do yeah It was just cheesy with bombs going off It's 1995 Ah Excited about this great fight Well, I don't know I just feel like that was appropriate, but I have to say I loved it.
I loved harm I loved Meg Austin. I thought she was great and I thought you know what maybe she could maybe she could be a long time partner Well, she is for a season. Yeah, well then it made me wonder I wonder why because of course the first episode and the second and really the entire first season you have to give a Cast a little bit of time to get to know each other, you know How one plays off the other but I felt like in this episode there was chemistry for the first time truly between the two I felt it Did you not give me the feeling? I mean there wasn't like Like a wall like an invisible wall between them, but it in terms of that David James Elliott Part though where she's with Oliver North arms sitting in the car and she's with Oliver North and Oliver North says You're a partner up there.
It's gonna think I'm your boyfriend And she's like good and I thought she was trying to make harm maybe just a little bit jealous, you know I don't know I don't know I mean that maybe that's a girl thing I just I was like you didn't pick up on that at all. I mean I of course Experienced that moment in the episode, but I didn't think of it as anything more than it was I didn't read into it at all Like you know I was a little bit because I thought maybe they were trying to well, you know with harm and Mac there was always that sort of well there was a tension a lot of tension I felt like they were trying to build that yeah, it never works with her which I think is one of the reasons that they're like You're at it was cute though. I mean for the first time I can say I thought she was cute I just what I didn't like though if I and you may not remember because I know Spoiler alert you watch all the episodes from episode one and no you watch them research You may not remember this one But in the last scene of this episode after harm says a spiel about well You know he said he was sorry and they do it about face and they walk back to the hangar Harm walks first and then she turns around and walks and her pants are about as tight as 19 like Those really why even wear you do it probably a Google image search of 1995 Navy khakis on a no I work with a V I work with Navy every day and I Gratito females well there you go. That's your problem.
Actually. They're all boys. You got to look up to female They're khakis are not that tight. They're not like I can tell what religion you are by the khakis you wear I don't know they're not I didn't think it was beyond the pale.
I was just like yeah, okay, they're tight whatever and Really that's what you were like. Okay, they're tight. Well, I didn't actually focus in on that. I take away I focus I tend to be professional when I'm reviewing these episodes and researching That's you always professional It's just driving me crazy dude because I know you pick up on these I mean I'm a woman and I picked up on this well They were really tight, but I didn't think it was abnormal like I thought They're really I mean she did she was tough.
She was a good good girl Well anyway, I didn't think they were too tight. I thought they were you know the episode never really came back to answering what brought the sign out via free fire open fire Sign yeah, did you think that was maybe Captain Reed? I don't know I I I thought about it I don't think it was Captain Reed. I don't think Captain Reed would want to get anybody killed You know buy something dumb like that.
I don't think he would do that so my suspicion would be Williams, but then again, it kind of goes back to the realism of His friend Tina in a bar being able to do what she did to these tapes You know him being able to first get to the tapes take them get them manipulated and get them back I just didn't buy any of that and the episode skipped through all that like it just assumed it was a it was just a given in the Problem. That's what I loved about this episode though I love the fact that I couldn't figure it out because I really thought the whole episode I thought it was boom. I thought Williams was covering for boom the whole time Yeah, I didn't get that once I entered that father son dynamic thing into it. I was like, okay It's certainly not gonna be I'm sure you figured it out.
I'm sure you figured it out I can see how I can see how I can see how of you are like yourself might think Okay, it's the obvious because they want you to think no the obvious guy was Williams do and I never thought it was Williams I always thought it was boom Yeah, it's like Williams is kind of an ass He's the easy guy to blame because he's got no Feelings he didn't seem to feel bad for any of the Marines. I've ever been killed. I Really thought it was boom. All right, so You were wrong.
I was right and no surprises there. So How do you rate the episode? We're rating out of 10. I would say a solid 8.3 8 I love it.
I thought it was so good. I did I love Oliver North. I loved all the characters I thought the acting was great. I thought the characters finally melded for the first time I thought the story was believable.
Yes 8.3. Okay. I would say probably a Seven at the highest why give it for all the reasons I've just described There's just a lot of believability I just I just can't connect the dots in my mind as in terms of this stuff actually happening like this And so really you don't think you don't think at any point there would be a guy who's a screw up and not gonna make the military career Who decides you know what? I'm gonna take so I think they jump they jump the shark when he pulled a gun and shot his buddy Well at that point though at that point Somebody was going to jail well at that point.
I know but so he's not gonna go to jail So of course he's gonna pull the gun but his best friend. I mean he's gonna shoot him do it like it Was in the heart I didn't like the fact that he survived I mean to the chest one of the head baby and that was only one to the chest But it was right to the heart and that didn't was not what I just so they just kind of they lost should have died right there in terms of Episode he's just kind of lost me when he went that far with it I was like okay, that's a little bit But no really though because he didn't feel bad for the death of the Marines at all so well I mean it shouldn't surprise you that he's crazy well Maybe but I just I was like he's if he was gonna if he was gonna blow it if he was gonna lose his mind and go crazy It would happen way before then in my opinion. No, I don't think so Well, I mean someday you'll rise to my Genius You are retired and I am still Okay So I'm excited about jag I am you know that episode made me want more made me want to watch another episode did you? Oh, because I Know I didn't because we've talked about this.
I don't I don't want to be the spoiler alert I want to watch the episodes as our viewers watch them, but I really like this one. All right, excellent 8.3 loved it I'm on a jag train. Well, I'm glad that one turned you on I mean what's unfortunate for you after all of this is that when they actually do get good You can't give them past the ten so you're gonna think back on No, eight point three is not great. That's a point three.
What is a point three? What got it from a point two to a point two? I'm usually gonna go with an eight point. Oh, but then I thought no I think kind of a hard-ass and I've rounded my numbers I think sevens and whatever and now I'm like, you know, it's an eight point three Why not why not hate because we're not gonna do that because that's like an eight point four.
It wasn't that good. Okay, all right All right, is that it are we adjourned? Yeah, it's great. All right.
