I don't know what you're talking about. Michael Jackson? Yeah dude. And are you okay?
It's like his biggest. I thought it was like Eddie. It's Annie. It's Annie.
Are you okay? Who the heck is Annie? His woman I guess. Okay.
Well that's great. All right. So who's Eddie? I don't know.
I always thought it was Eddie. Eddie are you okay? Like Eddie Van Halen. No.
Like you felt. Annie are you okay? All right. I might need to check you on that.
All right. Well, good afternoon evening or morning everyone. Hello. Welcome to episode six of UCM jagged.
Special shout out to producer. Aria. Yeah, good luck over there. Better you than me.
You're a better man than I. Yeah, we are the world's I think only podcast that is systematically rating and reviewing each and every episode of the Fantastic and Wonderful and Terrific series JAG. Ooh, welcome our new listeners. Welcome our new listeners.
Do we have a new listeners? We do. Oh. Well, we're up to 91 now.
91 downloads. Well, I know. That's with my dad. Mike, why do you do that every episode?
Don't you sound so much better. Oh, it sounds better. Don't you do it at the end. Why do you drop down?
Because it shouldn't drop down. I scinted it. It's this piece. No, no, no, no, it's not.
Now it's too far. No, that's perfect. No, it's too far away. All right, so, um, have you had a chance to review the notes that you wrote for me?
No, no, so the problem is I was busy. I did do notes for the show, but I was busy today and in a rush to get out with the food, you know, I do Saturday night food over here. And in the midst of the packing and I'm trying to make my six o'clock time on target here and I forgot my notes. It was good food, but you didn't forget my notes.
But I did take it first, right? Luckily for you. But you don't highlight what I highlight in my notes. Well, well, I had a huge shout out to Meg Austin in this episode.
Really? I did. I really did. Okay.
All right. Well, uh, Hey, before we actually get going into this episode, I did want to say that I am also a habit follower of a couple other podcasts and one of them is a podcast for Classic Love Line, which is a radio show that aired on K Rock and around the world. It's anybody snowing like can we talk about Jack? Anyways, I'm getting there.
Let me close the circle, if you will. So they had an episode quite a while back back in the day, if you will, where Trevor Goddard, who played Brumbi. I know who died, right? I don't know exactly all the details will get to that and get to it.
But anyway, if you'd like to check him out, he has just a couple insights on JAG, what a pretty decent guy and he's on Classic Love Line episode 1111, which aired, well, she quite a long time. Doesn't he die in seven? No, no, no, because the series went through like 2005. I know he made it through the series.
But anyways, for you die hard fans, he is out there and able to be listened to if you're so inclined. So with that, I will turn it over to my broadcast partner. Well, I mean, I was going to throw a shout out to Les Landau who directed this episode. He was also famous for directing several TNG episodes.
Oh, excellent. I don't know if you picked one. Which one said he did? Oh, how did I know you'd ask?
I don't know. I didn't do the research. I'm not the historian. Hold on.
Hold on. That's your job. There's a couple similarities between JAG and Star Trek the Next Generation and at the first series. Well, the first season.
First season. Extremely. Poor. Extremely tough.
So if he was a head writer, no, he was the director. Okay, whatever. And he did many throughout the series. I remember most of the really good ones were him.
Oh, okay, good. All right. Well, excellent. And actually, I thought this episode was in keeping with his style because I thought this episode was really good.
It was a great episode. All about jointness and a joint strike fighter. It wasn't about that. It was kind of about how the Air Force had invested in this thing and the Navy had invested in this thing.
And yeah, it was kind of neat. Oh, no. Yeah. I mean, in general, for back then, they were thinking about such things that we still deal with today.
Right? Yeah, that was good. It was a good episode. So I'm sorry.
Did you say it was a good episode? Yeah, I mean, it was good. It had some issues. I mean, I had some I had one major issue.
Really? I didn't see where that was highlighted in your. Well, we'll get to it. We'll get to it.
I don't like the fact that you do your notes in this really small font. It's not very hard for me to read it. It's well point. It's the standard.
It's really hard for me to read these. Well, just read the top senses of every kind of chunk there. And it kind of pointed out where I remembered where I know how that so went down. I just watched it today.
Well, then tell me about it. Well, I mean, it starts out with let me see. Well, you see you have their call signs and I didn't. I have Lieutenant McKee and Lieutenant Pendry.
Yeah. They're in two different 14s flying off of a carrier. They're doing a training mission. The USS America.
I think. Okay. I stipulate. Fine.
Fine. So they're flying and Pendry's going in. It's a joint training exercise and he goes in and does does the first thing, takes out a couple targets and then the idea is that she comes in and she takes out the rest. Well, the whole point of the training exercise was to test out this new app turn auto precision terrain navigation system, which is like autopilot for low level flying and unfortunately, Pendry, he's going in to do his run.
He takes out the first target. He goes to the second one and something goes wrong. We presumably don't really know what happens, but the plane crashes suddenly and Lieutenant Pendry and his back seat are killed in its lieutenant Marcus and it's tragic. Well, it is.
Yeah, it is tragic. And nobody really knows why. So the whole episode is about trying to figure out was was it this new app turn device that they're testing out or was it pilot error and that's why we need the lawyers to come into play. But so he augers in to the ground and then we transition to kind of happy music after all that.
Well, no, it's not really happy. I don't know. It's not really. It's lifting thing music.
No, it's just like it's like, okay, we're going to get to the bottom of this funeral dirge opening. No, no, it's not. Anyway, great. So it starts out and then I think the first I'm not looking at your notes right now, but I remember that at the end of the day.
I remember that at the crash site. Harmon Meg show up in the Huey. Remember this? I remember.
And they're in their summer lights. Again, in the middle of the desert at a crash site. I wonder how many uniforms they went through on the show. I don't know.
It had to be hundreds. They kept the props department busy though. It had to be hundreds. Nobody else is walking around out there in their summer lights, but the jack officers are.
So harm immediately suspects that it's of course this. It's not going to be the pilot. You know, why it's not going to be the pilot? Why wouldn't it be pilot error?
How could it just not be pilot error? I think a harm is a little jaded. A little. A little.
I'm waiting for your insight. Because the pilot was his old buddy. Well, yeah, but you're not supposed to give that away yet. We're not even closer there.
Oh, sorry. Oh my goodness gracious. So harm is like, yeah, this is the system took my buddy out or at the time to lieutenant. But then this guy from the contracting company, Mr.
Reed, Mr. Reed, and he's like, not a chance. Like there's no way my system would fail or screw up or what have you. And so they didn't I mean, would you say they even have a judge?
I would you say they even have that James Reed was from macroplac. I don't even give a damn about that. I just remember that it was Mr. Reed.
Well, you're like, no, it was from macroplac. Well, at least you have notes. You're nothing. You know, I think you should give me you should cite me every time you use my notes.
Well, I just think it's stupid that you wrote that down because it really doesn't matter. Well, we said he was with a contractor who built the machinery that does this autopilot flying anyway, a precision. Yeah. Okay.
Okay. Okay. So, so then we start the investigation, right? That's the third paragraph section there.
I see I'm following you right along. Yeah. Yeah. And they're interviewing Pendries commanding officer Meg and CEO get that's what I wrote pushing the limits.
Yeah. They clearly don't see eye to eye. And here we have, I think the classic operator versus someone who has no understanding of what it means to actually fly one of these things. Well, and Meg, I thought in this episode and the whole thing really seemed kind of.
I don't want to say heartless, but I do. She was really trying to get to the truth the whole time and not so much passionate about she really consider the fact that these people just lost one of their very good pilots. Yeah. No, no, no, uh, trying to understand their feelings as well.
But I think that was good because because as hard as that is, one, she's clearly a neutral factor and two, she really kind of brings harm back to back to. I mean, I already did the spoiler alert where the pilot who crashed and was killed was one of harm's friends. And I think thanks to Meg, who says, you know what, you really need to be a little bit more objective about this and consider the fact that maybe your friend screwed up. Well, yeah, she eventually does kind of get around to that.
But I mean, shoot immediately after the scene with the CEO, she goes and talks to Lieutenant Tess McKee. Who was who was flying name. Who was Pendries Wingman. Who was Pendries Wingman.
And, uh, and she gets all in her grill as well. And so immediately she starts off just kind of turning me up. But apparently it didn't turn off Lieutenant McKee that much because they went to the officers club together and we're pounding them back a little later in the episode. So I don't think it offended her too much.
Anyway, we're going off the rails. We're fast forwarding faster than we should. So we should talk about. Well, no.
And then so now, harm's like, all right, well, I see we talked to the CEO, we talked to the wingman. Let's go. I'm going to go talk to the spouse. And he does that one alone.
And he does. He does this one solo. Did you like the flashbacks? No, no, I didn't.
I mean, I did. So it was, I guess, important for the series in terms of, um, No, I'm forcing this thing that happens with his father. I mean, it, that kind of arc takes literal seasons of the series of him going through this whole thing with, uh, with his dad and how it kind of impacts him on a daily basis. But yeah, so he has the flashback at the house, which is when the Navy dudes first showed up and informed his family.
What happened? Which was at Christmas. Christmas around in 1969. I remember correctly.
And for me to question, but this is where the reveal where Annie opens the door, recognizes harm. Yeah. She's like, Oh, if I would have, I feel like calling out to a penry and saying you're here so we can all, you know, have a beer and whatever. And so immediately, you know, in my mind, I'm like, okay, this is a definite conflict of interest if we continue along this route.
Yeah, because harm didn't disclose this when he took on the investigation. He did not disclose it when he took on the investigation. And I'm pretty sure that that's a mandatory disclosure. If you have personal attachments to the deceased.
Yeah. Yeah. I think absolutely. It would be, it would be a make.
Tell Meg. And he apologizes to her later for not telling her. She accepts that pretty well. Old Meg.
You know, the more the series goes, the more I like her. I don't know. I didn't really care for so much in this episode. I mean, I appreciate what you were saying.
Well, not so much what you were saying, but I appreciate. Really? Why? Because I said it?
No, no, I mean, because it came from me. Exactly. Somebody else said it. Exactly.
But it's just stupid. But she doesn't, she doesn't, I mean, you need a little bit of empathy in times like these and she went about it like a rookie basically in my mind. And harm wasn't a blameless either. I mean, he obviously is going into this with clear.
Well, he says immediately that there's no way that Pendry screwed up. There's no way. He says immediately. He says immediately that he had to be a reason that Pendry was inverted.
Yeah, yeah. Pendry was, you know, not trying to beat the system. He wasn't competitive like that. He wouldn't turn this dog on machinery off to try to fly and fly the aircraft himself and beat the scenario.
Yeah, he really needed to be, he really needed proof that that his buddy was not to blame and he was. Yeah. Yeah. So they, he talks to her.
They hug it out for a little bit. Now she doesn't seem, I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but she didn't strike me as like overly shook up about. Not really. And I thought maybe she's just a bad actress, but her eyes weren't all puffy as though she'd been crying for days.
And she's just like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she's like, she yells at her son for not like, like, hey, I thought you were supposed to be cleaning your room. Who would care about that? I'm not sure at a time like that. At a time like that, whether your kid was cleaning his room was something I really care too much about.
It was just kind of odd. And she never really seemed, I was never sold on that. She was absolutely heartbroken. No, I wasn't.
This whole episode. I was. I was. I was.
I was. I mean, I think we learned a little bit about why as the episode unfolds, but why she's really not as broken up as we would have thought she was. Yeah, maybe a little bit, but still. I mean, she, she says flashing forward that out of their eight years of marriage, they spent two together.
So they didn't spend a lot of time. Yeah. I mean, I think she's really seen where she's like, he wouldn't have been sleeping with Tess McKee because. Because that was rumored.
I was his and he was mine or something weird. Well, that's a good argument. Yeah. But so, you know, whatever.
So anyway, he's getting back to the show. Harman Megan up going to a simulator. Yeah. And arm works through all the motions of everything.
Which was really cool, because didn't you think that he was really flying? So I was totally fooled. I was not fooled. Of course you weren't.
Because you had the whole damn episode figured out. It seemed to say it. No, no, no, sir, it just takes a little deduction. So I thought for sure he was it I thought I was just why I thought no way that they would just let him get in this plane And test this thing out of her pilot just exactly and he doesn't have apparently was flying He doesn't have any currency so they're not gonna be like not only are we gonna send you up in the plane But we're gonna test out every single deficiency and see if you could work your way through it in real time There's no way so I'm sure the writers thought there are viewers like my Well and they kind of played it because you could tell it was a cutscene for a commercial after he crashed Yeah, yeah, you know you can tell that was and I was thinking like wait a minute No, I know he doesn't die because the series goes on for ten years.
Yeah. Yeah, so nonetheless he Does do he's like hey, I'm badass enough to try this inverted myself. Yeah, see if I can do this scenario blah blah blah and of course that's where it crashes the the sim and cut the commercial and Your average viewer what they are was probably killed and they have to rewrite the whole series. No, I just it does make it It's a head scratcher.
Yeah, it's a head scratcher. It's a head scratcher. So Hate that you think that you just know everything about the show. It just drives me crazy No, did you know that the uniform that those guys were wearing when they got the helicopter when they arrived at the crash?
I was called summer whites. Did you know no? You didn't I only know that because I work with Navy So I'm not totally clueless. I have worked with Navy as well.
Yeah, but did you know it was called summer whites? Okay, you got me. Okay, great. You got me.
You got me. You got You think else you want to throw my way? No, I just hate that you think you know everything about the show It just drives me crazy because you don't so but the important thing other than the fact that you were fooled by the crash was that the contractor guy Mr. Reed reveals hey See that's no way Well, and also I hope the fact that he calls out harm for being in flight school with I read that quite a bit of research.
He did quite a bit of research to try and clear the old app turn system Yeah, he really did. Well, can you blame him? It was probably worth millions? Well, it probably said would be they just need to fix it But so yeah, so he calls him out So now everybody knows that harm has not been playing straight with everybody and then we go to a scene in a bar where Orify they're hanging up Henry's picture This scene was really horrible all the way around because I don't know any military person that their old tap tap tap And not the taps of the bar but tapping on the nail to hang old pinaries picture up on the wall and their little wall of great people that have come from this base and served at Miramar and I think she says they're Marines, but the guy looked like a navy guy that was giving her a hard time That was saying you know that weight that walls reserved for heroes only heroes and of course that makes lieutenant McKee the the Women would you say your name was Tess?
Yeah? Yeah, so she gets she gets defensive because I was a friend and our wingman So she's like you son of a bitch and she clocks him clocks him in the face. Yeah, she was good Oh, she was not happy So then he comes back at her But he doesn't hit her but Harman's up hitting him and then both of them roll out of that bar as fast as they can and head back to Miramar But I have to tell you that when they go back to Miramar and they're stopped at the gate Did you as a security person I really paid you? And he leans back in his seat as though he's not gonna talk for another five minutes But when they stopped at the gate and to produce their ID cards to be allowed entry into Miramar to the naval station there There was a century who was out in the road a century not a century.
Well a century a century We'll go with that well anyway The poor little man was standing in B. D. Who's in the middle of the street no lights on it? No nothing was just Waiting to get ran over.
Did you know you didn't notice that you didn't even take notice? I noticed those things drop down barrier no force I know they would have tried as best they could in jag I think to mirror what real life was like and I just can't even I mean I came in the air force before 9-11 but But not long before 9-11 and man the Yeah, force protection was whoa, wow, but weak. Wow. Yeah, see I did not I mean you got me I did not clue in on the security forces Wow features although, you know going back I do remember those days when I was standing in traffic waving waving in the so okay, so it's fine Well, but this was at night.
I mean you couldn't even see the guy well as a safety hazard I mean now we'd have lighting he'd be wearing a dog on well He wouldn't be wearing a reflective belt because I would be stupid, but he wouldn't be standing out in the middle of traffic anyway well something I noted maybe it was just the Normal viewer probably not pay attention to something at a cliffs or something at the time No, I just thought maybe a drop down barrier is better than standing on the street Well, all right, let me try and get us back on track as fascinating as that admittedly was You don't care this bothers me because you don't seem to care about any of my inputs into the show you only care about your Inputs into the show and your research what it what it shows I Feel like you don't care about any of my I really try to add a little real life. That was good. That was really good I mean for those of us that wonder about the ins and outs of no now. You're just being condescending now You're just being condescending.
No, okay. Well, maybe I'll just let's just talk about the funeral It was good wasn't it was pretty good. It was a nice funeral. Yeah, except again I'm not sold the widow didn't sell me on the fact that she was actually look pretty sad Black dress They're smiling at the kid the whole time because I think because I think wouldn't he be kind of broke it up too He was but I think he was trying to be strong for the little kid because he knows exactly what that little kids going through I mean harm was about that same age when his dad died.
He went through this He understands more than anybody else what's going through this little kid's head And I think he just wants him to know like hey, I'm here for you I Got it to be kind of touching the whole thing the missing man. I thought the missing man was cool I thought the scene was cool. Yeah, 21 guns I got relatively General service was really nice now. I don't know where Miramar is I thought it was inland but they were right on the beach I yeah, I don't know.
I well either way. You don't know. Did you say you don't know? I did research.
I didn't research. No, I didn't. I mean this was your question So if you're so curious about it well, I mean you knew how far they were from the Mexican border three episodes go To where Miramar is the motivation of the character relied on him saying that this is just a scene and you don't know where the cemetery is It might not even be the well, they do lovely cemetery out at Coronado Island. Well, maybe that's where it was I don't know these things.
I don't know these things. Okay, but it was a nice funeral. Okay. It was a great funeral And even a contractor was nice to the wife well and harm got mad at it.
He did You're not sincere blah blah blah. I was very sincere. I mean you didn't I thought something was supposed to say exactly it's like he showed up and then he gave his respects and then he wasn't like some long drawn out Thing with the wife. Yeah, he was fine.
I actually yeah, and then so but it's at this point harm apologizes to Meg Mexter Yeah, it's like dude. I should have time and he should have he should have well. Yeah, I'm a big harm and ramp and but I like I said This first season he's kind of pushing my limits. Well, he's kind of annoying me there.
They're always writing him like that though He's written as a character that pushes. I mean you remember the machine gun in the courtroom I mean that's to come but well, then I'm sure I that's why I would remember it Josh Come on you know because I'm going in order like we're supposed to go I haven't watched the series in years But he's always one that kind of pushes the bounds pushes authority a little bit in every main scenario that he goes through Yeah, I'm trying to really been heavily reliant whether he knows it or not on Meg and the work my favorite ship Yeah, but he's been heavily reliant on Meg and I don't even know that he realizes how much she's contributed to the success of Their cases that they've had all season long. She's been the workhorse. She's been the one that's while harsh sometimes She's the one who solves the cases and he's emotionally invested in every case and I mean So this is the problem the Mac has with him.
Oh my goodness gracious, but Mac had her own problems with the alcohol I Know Meg ass harm she's like hey man. I think you're a little too close to this. Yeah, and I'm of course is like no And he gets on her ass a little bit about that. Well, I come on lieutenant square yourself away I know how to separate my personal feelings from from work.
Yeah, but so this whole funeral scene Yeah, this is where my beef with the episode comes in and and what I want to do is take a few minutes here to memorialize The character that was completely ignored the entire episode his back-seater who tented Marcus. Oh, does nobody care? I too You think poor Pendry is the only dude that got wasted in this episode But he has a guy in the backseat and he's mentioned once when they go to the crash site No, they're like hey, we cleaned up the bodies, but there's no body parts over the place So watch out don't trip so I think you know, you know, I'd like to just take a moment Marcus and his contributions to The problem you didn't really contribute to that we never even saw him well, I know but it doesn't make any sense They never even refer to the fly crew that was killed. They just call it well lieutenant better He's the only one that died maybe Marcus was like a test guy Or maybe he was just contractors send people no They don't call the contractor So anyway Service and anyways, all right, so I Can't believe you wasted three minutes of our podcast to talk about a guy we never saw or heard from Yeah, well, so and then so harm and may continue to kind of go at each other make a cutest arm of grasping at straws to try and Prove it is it really looks like he is it really looks like he is the more we go into the show the more the contractor system seems Infallible it doesn't really appear that that had anything to do with the crash and yet harm is just Insistent that there's no way that his buddy would have screwed up there had to be a reason Yeah, he thinks there's no way his buddy was too good and I think there was a light in there about how As pilots when they get children and whatever they fly even more cautiously than before so since he had a kid and whatever It was very unlikely he was hot dogging or trying to prove himself in some odd way or whatever so after the funeral Harman's up going back to old Annie's house and Has another flashback and we get the angel music.
What's up with the angel music? I don't know I think they want you to feel like they want you to know that it's a flashback for one and by the way I didn't think the kid in the flashback looks anything like harm and rabble to look as a kid they got like fat kid Yeah, he was like he was like beaver's friend now. You know he was he was the kid in the first Harry Potter movie Dursley's kid the fat kid they got like 37 presents for Christmas or only 36 or something like that 36 36 presents 37 presents the previous year 36 it was a problem. Yeah, so that's uh, that's uh, that's uh, that's who he was But yeah, I didn't look anything like it wasn't really I wasn't really buying it and the angel music I think was just to let us know that it was a flashback in case anybody well They put it to black and white so I kind of got the clue about that.
They gotta make sure the choir You know, I think jag had a an older audience you think so like geriatric older. I think so, yeah Their demographic is like they probably did and I wanted to make sure the granny and the nursing home knew that this was a flashback Maybe maybe but um before maybe not maybe it's just a horrible choice of music. I don't know so spoiler alert here Annie comes back. This is not the end of harm in Annie If you thought there was a I thought in any way shape or form like the starting of a spark between them I did feel that.
Did you feel that? Of course That's because I know what's coming back the second time to the house I'm like I get it the first time because she was married to your best friend And you need to show support and he does I sort of understood the second time because when he went back He sort of wanted to talk to her about the possibility that Henry was had an affair either with Mickey or with somebody else or many somebody else's But it just didn't seem professional to me that he would go back to this grieving spouse or Or hang out with a kid. Well or partially grieving It's just didn't I just didn't feel right to me and I did feel a little bit of that Hmm I wonder if there's a little bit more to miss Annie than yes, so she does come back she comes back I can't remember if it's like as her as her hair and Josh. Oh Yeah, yeah, very underutilized name in the acting character community by the way Josh You don't see that too much.
I think there was a movie like where someone was mr. Joshua like a point break or something like that Yeah, yeah, underutilized name it came across very well Okay, so and we're so now now we're back with me Are we were we talking about the second visit to any? Yes, the second visit to any is that are we done? Oh sure well, I mean I hold on to be determined if you can actually add to it Well, I know but when harm's visiting her for the second time and they're sitting out there having a couple cold ones on a little Bench yeah, and Josh comes out and he's got his little broken little airplane and harm had gone and fix the plane And when harm was going through and explain the lift and how a lighter works and everything I kind of thought he was gonna have a What was that show with a Colombo moment where as he's explaining the principles of flight to this little kid?
He would be like oh oh, I never considered that this might be the reason that Pendry went down that he would have solved it all through the little Also a plane oh oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I thought maybe because otherwise what was the point of that whole because I think it's um I mean lord knows how much of this first season was written before they actually went through and and did accomplish some of these episodes But I think it's kind of foreshadowing a future relationship between harm and him and any and whatever Wait a minute do they date? I don't want to give it away Especially since you said I'm gonna date his best friends girl. Well, you know a song anyway. He's not gonna There's like my best friends girl.
It's a song. Yeah, she used to be mine. Yeah. Yeah, yeah Anyway, he doesn't really date her well, you'll see you'll see but why would she come back if not I'll just leave it at that I don't know maybe another Another guy So you know I was telling you can we just break yes?
Yeah, you know how I was telling you about how I've been kind of reading all this Titanic stuff lately because there's a big Titanic exhibit in town Yeah, well, I want to go see the exhibit, but I want to do my research first and then that way I'm sure they have things that explain everything when you're there. Well, no well sometimes But I have to do with post reports with yeah, I'm sure they do but I just I don't know spark my interest I'd like to read up on it before I anyway I there's the story that I uncovered today on the internet about how there was this you know They had the survivors or whatever and there was this little baby while there's a woman and she was pregnant She was coming home from her honeymoon or going to her honeymoon one thing or another She's on the Titanic because of her honeymoon. She gets rescued But her husband dies but she's pregnant with you know, her husband's kid but her husband doesn't make it off the ship So she goes back to England and she ends up marrying a guy who was another survivor of the Titanic Isn't that crazy? Yeah, yeah, that's a weird story.
That is a weird story Yeah, anyway, so we talk about Annie and harm and and Annie's husband was an F 14 pilot who died flying up 14 And wouldn't it be crazy if she actually engaged in a relationship with harm Yeah, because he's an F 14 pilot and her best friends best friends You know, you know why the thing with um lieutenant Marcus makes me mad too is And what you're saying kind of keep me in on this is in top gun they make a big deal Boosting his spouse or girlfriend or whatever she was she was Meg Ryan and that she was destroyed I mean that well, they had a son she was probably in the movie for two minutes Maybe a total screen time and she sold me. Yeah, whereas this lady's half the episode Anyways, but she did not seem broken Again this this thing Made that clear that they didn't have a lot of time together when they were married She wasn't love with her husband. They didn't have a son But when they when they all the affair talk came up, she's like oh no that would never happen. Yeah, we were so in love Fairly defensive about that, but not too defensive.
Oh super offensive. She can kick him out of her house Which I think most women would do well, that's because harm is very tactful. He did not just come out and be like hey Were you you know, he sort of did no swing he sort of did he's like, you know, there's talk about well Yeah, you know, there's talk not hey I need to ask you if you were I was pretty obvious and she did snap back at him because remember when she sent her son in To go wash his hands and then her son for dinner or whatever and then her son comes out You probably don't remember this little Josh comes out and and hands over hands over ha ha in the pun I'm like shows her shows her his hands to make sure that they're clean and she's like You wouldn't even let me finish. Yeah, she's like well, you're gonna have to show those to harm because he's the inspector tonight Kind of implying that yeah, I get that you're questioning me about My husband again back to the love theme because he's like there's something about a man's voice I'm just saying there's something about a man's voice, especially when it's yours harm.
No, she didn't say it She did she totally applied it not totally implied it. So I think we end up back in the bar and the contractors like hey And I would have had the name of the bar it was like I don't think they did yeah, yeah, yeah, or ty been no It was like tight not anyway, no UT like a nautical. Oh, okay. That's pretty good.
It was kind of catchy brass brass Not that's what it's called brass not Wow, that's great Ah, so but they get confronted by the contractor who brings him this fake new paper. Oh, man It's how he was about to hit him too as he saw that yes You don't go attacking my dead friend yeah, and that's exactly what this contract was a contract wait Wait before you if you look at the date look at the date on the newspaper and harm sees that the date is actually tomorrow's day And then but then we gotta make clear the paper was accusing What's his name? Hendry of having an affair with the key and she had a no dude There was blah blah blah blah blah blah your just gonna blah blah blah blah No, that was quite Just that Pendry had had an affair with McKee. This is what the newspaper article would have implied that he had an affair with McKee.
She got pregnant. Good enough for me and my Bobby McKee. And she had an abortion and And yeah, that's what it was gonna say. And it would have discredited Pendry.
I mean, let's just put the whole aircraft incident aside The fact that he made have had a relationship with his wingman got her pregnant and then she got a miscarriage No, completely destroys his credibility after he's dead and harm does talk to the contractor about this later Oh, no, he talks to the commanding officer It's bad enough this kids got to grow up with a father who died in a 14 crash But you're really gonna discredit his dad and make his dad seem like he's a father's child Really? Yes, you you saw you you can't handle the truth man. I know the truth dude. You're you're having relations With one of your one of your squadron Junior officers.
Yes. That would have got him drummed out of the Navy drum faster than you do a drum I don't know really where that term comes from I think they used to drum literally like it. Yeah, like if you read the book the Citadel if you read the book the Citadel There's a it's about the citizen probably and anyway Someone people are literally drummed out like like to a jump like when they're kicked out for honor code violation or something Wow still today. I don't know.
I didn't go to the Citadel, but this is a Interesting book. I think there was Pat Conroy for those interested You you um, why did you read this book? I read it while I was a cadet at the esteemed United States Air Force Academy Wow such good times you had there. I recall at least I got a really good book every now and then Yeah, yeah, great.
Well, I can't wait to Actually is a page turner. It's pretty good. It's pretty good. So now we find harm our hero in the cockpit of a real Sometimes he's he's back, you know since episode one He is now back again in the seat of an F-14 which reminds me really flying right really fine Okay, so we should explain I know you have something important you wanted to say But we should also tell the listeners that harm confronts the commanding officer And we skipped over the part that I wanted to say that was in my notes about Meg when Meg is talking to her Oh, Jesus when Meg is talking to harm and he's in the jet, but he's not flying He's just sitting in a jet on the flight line and she climbs up there.
I'm surprised hold on I'm surprised I don't get a comment surprise. I don't get a comment on Your thoughts on David James Elliott sitting in all his dress whites or whatever summer whites in a cockpit of an F-14 with his Ray Bands. I'm surprised. I'm not hearing something about that.
No, you look good. He looked good, but I I mean he always looks good at everything. He's hard and rad. I mean come on the guy just he's wonderful attractive and everything Sexy, but anyway, I bring myself back to reality He's sitting in the plane and Meg is like, oh can I approach and he says?
Yeah, so she climbs up the little ladder and they're talking and And if you You made me lose my train of thought just like I knew you would He should be thinking about harm and rab instead of what she said Oh, no what I appreciated about Meg was that she is the one who told harm originally that She thought there was some hanky-panky going on Between Pendry and McKee and she says you know McKee was pregnant She did have a miscarriage and harm says well who is the father and she said you know I'm not gonna tell you because I really don't think that it makes a damn bit of difference in this case So that's for me. She called it privileged information. You know, I thought she was kind of protecting a fellow Female yeah, I don't well yeah, we're partners Thanks for telling me that you knew Pendry and getting us involved in an investigation that we should have never been a part of because It was a complete conflict of interest don't try to put this on Meg Don't I mean I really like harm But you can't I thought what she did was really great there And it didn't take harm long to figure out that the father of the baby that was Miss carried or whatever it was was actually the commanding officer of the squadron if it wasn't for those damn kids I mean it couldn't really be anybody else because there was only like that was the only other guy in the episode besides the contractor guy I'm a squatter and a flier. So could have been anyone of those guys.
They weren't on They only check in the squadron. They didn't get the what? Only check in the squadron. Okay, sir.
Yeah, never mind. But anyway, so what I wanted to say What are you looking at? I'm trying to talk to one another and you're on your cell phone. No, I'm not on my phone Critical notes about this series and the reason I was excited to see harm in the old 14 again It's because it reminded me of all the different aircraft that he gets to fly over the course of JAG and so it's sort of like So far but he also flies a C-21 a C-47.
Yes, World War II vintage. Yeah, so I don't Terrain the aircraft a steerman by plane Remember the yellow plane that I don't skip ahead I just get my head. Why are you telling our readers about all the things that he flies? I'm surprised you don't appreciate this because you're such a harm fan.
I mean, I am I am you put I say a historical fact as I was talking to you about how rude I think it is when you look at your cell phone Yeah, you're talking to me on the podcast. So I purchased this book of late called 101 things that define America that are stationed or displayed in one of the many Smithsonian museums that we have here in Washington Yes, and one of the things that we have is Helen Keller's watch her little watch And it was actually designed by a guy who didn't actually make it for her He made it for himself But it was a pocket watch and it was a watch where he always felt rude Looking at his watch when he was in a meeting with somebody else because he thought that they would think that he didn't have time for them Or that he was bored or whatever it might be the same feeling I get when you look at your phone when we're doing this podcast or when we're just talking in general which happens all the time Yeah, anyway long story short the phone or the watch by touch you could he could feel it in his in his pocket And it would it would turn and it had these little elevated little pieces on a brass face that would turn with the hour And he could feel where noon was supposed to be and where the little arrow was presently pointing and he could do it all I feel anyway Helen Keller of course she would thought that was the coolest thing on the planet So we gave it to her years later now it's in the Smithsonian Tell you that because Well people even long before iPhones thought that it was rude to pay attention to other things when they should be paying attention to People that they were interacting I thought you were telling you that because harm Was looking at a watch when he figured out this whole thing with the app turn system He wasn't looking at his watch. Oh, so it doesn't have much to do with this episode It has to do with you being trying to be multitasking and being rude No, I'm telling us about spoiler alerts that we don't care about because we don't want to spoil earlier because we still We don't watch the episode no look I think you should have some a appreciation for the fact that I have tallied I've done enough research. We can talk about those individually as we progress No, but you want to know the totals right?
I know he's not even gotten into any general than the F14 fine. All right, I see I see how it is I see how it's what we're looking at there We're looking at notes that you would put on I I systematically tracked the aircraft that he flew in over the course of the series And I was just merely trying to share that with you. You're so nerdy factoid I know that our listeners are like, you know, I really like this Sarah girl because she's actually funny, but Josh just What are you talking about? I just nerd straight out information knowledge.
That's what I bring. All right. All right So so now now harm decides. Oh, so we go through the hole.
They're sitting there talking in the cockpit like you said Yeah, and I'm like this is just like this movie named fate is the hunter where The coffee on the there's yeah coffee on the control panel and they re-applicated every single aspect down to the type of high heels The stewardess is wearing and Meg's like well, I don't think I had coffee and is that 14 harm? Nice try and he's like that's not the point and so all this leads puts in C to motion a series of events it does which leads to Harm being in a cockpit of an F14 to replicate every single thing that Henry did prior to this and did you feel that he did you feel that harm blackmailed the CEO yes to get into the jet? Well, he just played on his emotions. I think you blackmailed him a little bit.
I don't think so I think he's just like hey, man If you don't let me do this then your career is over. No, no, no No, I think what he said was if you don't let me do this then you are going to let his wife and his son live with the shame of This paper being published which said he has an affair with McKee and you name it and so on So well, you're a good dude, but in a broader sense Maybe that would mean that your career a commanding officer is over no because the paper was gonna say McKee had an affair with Henry so harm is appealing to it better Whatever is whatever is whatever is the better part of his self such that he will say okay fine Do what you got to do to try and clear this guy? We really got to work out this arrangement For you on a weekly basis And it's a couch it's so uncomfortable like I'm just so I'm smashed So perhaps we will be all right. I mean producer Carol over there saying hey you should sit in this rocking chair It's very comfortable work.
No, but I could just orient this equipment to fit that I feel like I need a You have well you can get him it I Anyway, so Ends up in the in the F-14 he's like hey, I'm gonna do everything this guy did everything that guy So what did that include that include the traps on an aircraft carrier by prior? And so he does these and who's this backseater Tess McKee and she's like doing the step he's I'm sorry time they planned you suck at flying these things you can't land for crap Yes, and and she's like boy one more of these and I would have joined the air force or something like I mean just terrible terrible dig at the best service So they he does all the traps successfully somehow after not having any certifications for a number of months or years or whatever and Well, you know, okay. I mean they successfully get better okay, and so they start the mission they start the mission and Harm he does well. I mean he he does fine He takes out bravo and he goes on to Charlie and yeah He turns it over to the machine He does notice though on the last trap remember on the last trap There's like that pause as he's looking at the instruments and he's realizing something's not right But I don't know if he didn't put it together, but he's he's looking at the little the attitude indicator Sure, yes, and it's off kill her just a little bit and I think there's a point there where he's kind of like huh That's I mean, it's not bad because we're it's okay, but it's not where it should be right and That plays into the rest of the episode.
Yes, so he's flying this mission and he's doing everything that lieutenant. Can you? Henry well, you need to reprimand me. I mean I can't always remember talking about it for hours Through his whole funeral.
Sorry. I remember Marcus for what it's worth good Anyway, the backseater So anyway, yeah, so he goes through and the same thing happens He harmed disengages his own self from the plane and he allows the ad after Machine to take over and the same thing happens that happened to Pendry However, harm was able to get out of the situation probably because he knew in advance. He knows what happened to Pendry So he can yeah, basically what happened was you know what? Okay, well, I'm just saying he survived and well, yeah But you didn't really say how so basically when he did all those carrier landings it jacked up the afternoon such that when he Was flying after and thought that he was already inverted so it tried to correct So it tried to correct him to actually be invert it and so it correct so he figured it out and voila And he tells the contractor and the contractors like okay, so my only question about this whole wait Let me guess what about lieutenant Marcus?
That's my notes. Yeah. Yeah, what about poor lieutenant marks? But we already went over so we're gonna question so my other point was How do we know that harm's terrible traps weren't the things that screwed up?
Apturned like you have to presume that the traps that lieutenant colonel Pendry or lieutenant commander lieutenant Pendry did were probably pretty good And not near as harsh on the aircraft as harms so can we actually conclude based on harms terrible flying that did harm do all five traps? In the same aircraft well, he did them all in the same aircraft But what I'm saying is he was very much no, I know but did he do we know that well? Because if you have a different aircraft we have to assume it's the same aircraft because he did it exactly like the lieutenant did but what I'm saying is is if he was Doing the traps and very hard on the equipment then he could have broke it versus Pedry might not have broken it because he did it Well, I would hope that the machine was a little bit better built. It was kind of a poor test In the end based on well, I am sure that they would do future tests.
I'm sure that's not the only test that they would do well They didn't though. So anyways food for thought As we press on here, so what were your thoughts on this? No, we're just one of our viewers that one of our listeners had told us we need to keep it an hour No, we're we're doing fine. Okay, so what I give This episode I thought it was really good I would give it I think an eight that was good an eight.
Yeah, I really enjoyed it Yeah, I was probably I mean relatively speaking to everything we've seen to date I would almost concur with with an eight But I'm not I'm gonna give it a seven and a half Because I gave it an eight. No, there were there were some fundamental kind of flaws What what the logic like we just discussed with a using harm as though thing that validates the conclusion when he's a terrible pilot at this Boy, I think it just it was a cause for pause. I don't know that it validated it, but I think it was Josh, I think it was a good counter argument to what could have possibly happened I think it was a good it was good. It was good It just if I was the contract that's what I would have given on was a you're kind of a crappy pilot right now So right so then you would have said let's give it to a more season Yeah, which is presumably what they did There was a security flaws that you pointed out You're just using those now to justify your ridiculous 7.5 rating.
Yes, and then there's of course I have to deduct points for Half the air crew ridiculous Acceptable I can't even believe that that would figure into your calculations for the grade of the show Well, yes, it must because I'm not gonna forget and neither should you or Marcus it was that was Kirk's son. Yeah, so I was thinking dr. Marcus. Yeah But he got killed by a Klingon.
Yeah, I know Anyway, yeah, so I wouldn't forgot because the name is I mean what you did forget Well, I didn't even clue it. I wasn't I didn't have an attachment to him So we had a couple good references in the show though over the lion Marcus. I mean always it's just like we've always talked about everything in life Tides back. Oh, it's dies back to everything everything.
It's all the lessons you need to learn about life for now Movie yeah, everything's there love hate jealousy what might have been oh friendship loss. I feel young Anyways, all right, so I think that covers this episode for the week Unless you have any other commentary on the security procedures Procedures I yeah, I thought this was good. I feel like the more like I said the more episode The more episodes in season one that we go through the more that I like Mac or oh Yes, see Meg Meg, you know, it's interesting we go from Meg to Mac, right? Yeah, yeah anyway I liked me.
I thought she was good in this episode. I like her for the last few I think she's she's pretty squared away And I hope I know that you've seen how this ends between her and then we bring on Mac is next right as his next partner Yes, but but the problem is it doesn't end tragically no, so this is the deal the interesting thing between seasons one and season two is They set up a cliffhanger at the end of season one that season two does not resolve because of the cancellation of the show After season one and then the transition to a new network in the season two really so it's very interesting They try to clean it up with sort of a flashback episode Yeah, mid or three quarters of the way through season two just kind of Basically at the end of season one if I remember it right harm is about to get in some serious trouble for something and And so on and so forth and they never really resolve it they start season two like season one never ended like it Yeah, it's very really weird because the show went from what NBC to CBS yeah, yeah, yeah Wow, yeah, so some more you guys really oh My god, oh that is so rude for our listeners. I Hopefully didn't hear much of that. They've heard at all, but anyways, um, yeah, not good for NBC No, no, it wasn't the NBC it was the the following network.
They should have tied it Got to hang on to the show for another eight seasons. Well, no, I know but the point was just the cliffhanger that kind of went unresolved My point was it was ridiculous for NBC never dropped the show first place. Well after this season are you really? Sure about that.
I'm really ready to bring on Mac and the rest of the JAG team I really want to see Admiral Chegway again again because he doesn't come up for till the end of the season I think he doesn't arrive so we see a lot of some I'm gonna work for him. Yeah, yeah, except right. I want to report actually report in every day All right, so okay, so basically appreciate Because of some very defined and Good well either way at seven and a half is good. All right, so yeah, we'll see you next week Next week hopefully some you don't get sick or whatever again.
I won't all right
