Paul Ehrenfest stond bekend als een briljant fysicus. Maar ondanks zijn prestaties was Paul Ehrenfest diep ongelukkig. Op 25 september 1933 bracht hij eerst zijn vijftienjarige zoon en daarna zichzelf om het leven. Aan de hand van brieven en gesprekken met kenners maakte radiomaker René van Es een portret van deze bijzondere hoogleraar, om te achterhalen hoe het zo ver kon komen.
