Op 3 augustus 2015 verdwaalden twee studenten in een Limburgse mergelgrot. Ze zaten 21 uur vast in het pikkedonker, en kwamen anderhalve kilometer verderop–in Vlaanderen- weer vrolijk naar buiten gewandeld. Sindsdien is van het stel nooit meer iets vernomen. Kenners van de mergelgrotten vinden het verhaal ongeloofwaardig, omdat de meeste mensen onder vergelijkbare omstandigheden overvallen worden door doodsangst, waardoor ze volledig verlammen en –áls ze het overleven- zwaar getraumatiseerd raken. Radiomaker Jan Maarten Deurvorst ging op zoek naar de studenten en naar andere grotkinderen, die nooit eerder over hun ervaringen hebben gesproken, om te begrijpen wat er met je gebeurt als je de dood in de ogen kijkt, en wat je in huis moet hebben om de angst te overwinnen.
