Er zijn momenten waarop je als saxofonist zou kunnen besluiten om op te houden met spelen: bijvoorbeeld als je rechterhand uitvalt of als je kanker krijgt. Gelauwerd saxofonist Ties Mellema maakte het allemaal mee en bleef er verrassend nuchter onder: hij moest door. Toch maakte hij na zijn laatste ziekte een radicale keuze: Na 20 jaar verliet hij het roemruchte Amstel Quartet om een nieuwe muzikale weg in te slaan. Radiomaker Arno Peeters volgde Mellema bij repetities en optredens, in de hotelkamer en in het ziekenhuis. Ze spraken over alle uitdagingen die achter hem liggen en de nieuwe mogelijkheden die in het verschiet liggen.
