Episode Description
The United Kingdom has been widely condemned for ignoring a United Nations deadline to hand the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius. A six-month deadline to return control of the overseas territory came and passed with the UK refusing to recognise Mauritius's claim of sovereignty over the islands. The United Nations overwhelmingly voted in May to set the six-month deadline for UK's withdrawal from the Indian Ocean archipelago in a major diplomatic blow.
For more on this, Channel Africa’s Khumbelo Munzhelele spoke to Olivier Bancoult, Chagossian activist and leader of the Chagos Refugee Group. He says UK's refusal to give up control of the islands shows it considers itself to be above international law.
