Ukrainian Jewish Heritage: Interview—Paulina Zelitsky Part 2

After a career working as a civil engineer in Paulina Zeltisky retired and wrote her memoirs. Recently she kindly agreed to an interview on Nash Holos to discuss her book and share some details of her amazing life, including a daring and dangerous defection, running across the tarmac with two small children in tow, at Gander Airport in Newfoundland, Canada in 1971. In Part 1, Paulina described the dangers and indignities she endured as a Jewish girl growing up in the Soviet Union, then later working on a Soviet naval base in Cuba and accidentally becoming privy to top secret plans of the little-known Second Cuban Missile Crisis. She shares what led her to defect to Canada, where she knew not a soul and could not speak a word of English or French.In Part 2 of this interview, she describes her harrowing experiences surrounding her defection and adaptation to a new life in a strange country, surrounded by strangers. She also shares alarming news, not reported in the western media (although covered in Russian media and why recent developments in Cuba have convinced her that we are now facing a third Cuban Missile Crisis.
