Ukrainian Jewish Heritage - Interview with Dave Bloom

Dave Bloom is a member of the board of an organization dedicated to preserving the story of two Jewish communities and surrounding areas in Ukraine. One of them is called Drohobycz and the other is called Boryslav.Recently a synagogue was restored in this area, which had been destroyed by the Nazis during the Holocaust and left to ruin under the Soviets.It was built in the 1860s and was one of the largest synagogues in Galicia, spanning what is now Poland and Ukraine. At least a million Jews lived in Galicia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Now, after the Holocaust when most of the inhabitants were murdered en masse or sent to death camps, very few remain.The residents of Drohobycz, along with friends from Israel and other parts of the world, recently completed a five-year project to restore the synagogue that once stood proudly in their town.Dave have kindly agreed to speak with us from his home in Israel to tell us about himself and about the project. (Transcript and photos here.)
