ULTIMATE TOMIKI AIKIDO MASTER

from World of Martial Arts Show · host Sport Social Podcast Network

ULTIMATE TOMIKI AIKIDO MASTER Bob Jones, a renowned international and UK Tomiki Aikido sensei, talks to Andrew Staton at the Doncaster Martial Arts Show 2026. Few individuals have had a greater impact on the development of Tomiki Aikido in Britain than Bob Jones. For more than five decades, the Leeds-based instructor has quietly shaped generations of martial artists, combining technical excellence with a passion for teaching that has earned him respect across Europe and beyond. Whether on the dojo floor, in the coaching corner or around the boardroom table, Jones has become synonymous with the growth and success of competitive Aikido in the UK. Bob's martial arts journey began in judo in 1966 before discovering Tomiki Aikido in 1972. Drawn to Professor Kenji Tomiki's innovative blend of traditional Aikido principles and structured randori competition, he quickly established himself as one of Britain's finest exponents of the style. His competitive career spanned more than two decades, collecting regional, national and international honours, highlighted by European Team Championship gold in 1983. Those achievements provided the foundation for an even greater contribution—as a coach, mentor and ambassador for the art. As Senior Instructor at Ichiban Dojo in Leeds, Bob has developed countless students, from complete beginners to international competitors. His influence stretches far beyond Yorkshire, with many of today's leading British instructors tracing their technical lineage directly to his teaching. His ability to break down complex techniques into practical, understandable principles has made him one of the most sought-after seminar instructors in the Tomiki Aikido world. Jones has also been a driving force behind the organisational development of the art. Serving as Chairman of the British Aikido Association and playing a leading role within the Worldwide Sport Aikido Federation, he has helped guide the evolution of Tomiki Aikido while remaining steadfast in preserving its traditions and technical integrity. His seminars throughout Europe, North America and Japan have reinforced his reputation as a thoughtful technician whose emphasis on timing, balance and precision reflects the very essence of Professor Tomiki's vision. Now holding the rank of 8th Dan, Bob Jones remains one of the most respected figures in British martial arts. His legacy cannot simply be measured by medals won or grades awarded, but by the thriving community of instructors and students who continue to carry his teachings forward. In an era when martial arts are constantly evolving, Bob Jones stands as a reminder that true mastery is defined not only by personal achievement but also by the generations inspired to follow in your footsteps.Find his book here: www.ichibanleeds.co.ukInterview filmed by Dean Meadows of Pentagram Pictures With thanks to Bob Sykes, Paul Barnett and the UK Martial Arts Show.
