An umbilical hernia arises when fat or a portion of the intestine pushes through a soft spot in the abdominal muscles close to the belly button. This condition is most common in infants, especially premature babies, but it can also affect adults. In babies, the hernia often appears as a soft bulge under the skin and may become more visible when the baby cries, coughs, or strains. Most infant umbilical hernias close on their own by age one or two. In adults, causes may include obesity, heavy lifting, multiple pregnancies, or previous abdominal surgeries. Unlike in children, adult hernias are less likely to resolve without treatment and may require surgical repair, especially if they cause pain or an increase in size.
