Un-Protected

The idea that men are "protectors" sounds noble until you ask a harder question: protected from what, exactly? In this sharp, unsettling conversation, Nix and Tons dismantle the myth that standing at the door with a bat equals real safety and expose the deeper harms that women are still forced to navigate. What starts as a challenge to a familiar gender script becomes a much bigger reckoning with control, responsibility, and how easily "protection" turns into coercion. Nix pushes beyond the fantasy of the heroic male guardian to argue that real protection means preventing harm, confronting misogyny, believing women, and changing the conditions that make people unsafe in the first place. Tons brings the perspective that many women already understand: the constant risk management, the false sense of security, and the emotional burden of having to protect themselves from men rather than be protected by them. You'll discover: Why "I’d step in front of a bullet for you" is not the same as actual protection How protection gets confused with control, from dress codes to curfews to silence Why women are often blamed for harm they did not cause What real protection looks like in everyday life, at home, at work, and in politics How men can challenge other men and use their influence to make women and children safer The conversation goes further than personal safety. It gets into the mental load women carry, the failure of narrow definitions of masculinity, and the way a single false story can leave both men and women trapped. If men are told their worth depends on being protectors, what happens when protection fails, or when the threat was never the one they were watching?Essential listening if you care about gender, safety, power, or what it really means to look after the people you love. This episode doesn’t just critique the myth - it offers a better definition of protection, one that actually helps.
