Unbroken Chain
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
The sermon reflects on the Gospel account of the feeding of the five thousand, the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. Rather than focusing solely on Christ's power to multiply so little into so much, Fr Thomas highlights the "unbroken chain" of ordinary people behind the miracle: the boy who offered his lunch, the mother who packed it, the father who provided for the family, the fisherman who caught the fish, and the baker who made the bread — each playing a small but essential role, illustrating a synergy between God and humanity. The central message is a call against self-centeredness and the temptation to feel one's contribution is too small to matter. The homily urges us to look around at the hunger, loneliness, and struggles of others and respond with generosity rather than indifference. Practical applications include reaching out to estranged family or friends, forgiving grudges, teaching children generosity and selflessness, and staying engaged despite isolation. Fr Thomas also commends the congregation's recent community care donation drive as a living example of this "unbroken chain," closing with a reminder that love is shown both through generosity and through spreading God's word.
