Unchain My Heart - (Rev. Tamara Lebak)

from All Souls Unitarian Church · host All Souls Unitarian Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Ray Charles was a border walker. He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business." The influences upon his music were jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and even country. His piano playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles. Criticized and beloved, Ray Charles’ influence stemmed from his capacity to embrace and adapt without losing his identity. Come explore what we can learn about how to live our lives through the lens of this incredible musician. WANT TO LISTEN?
