UNCOMMON Flourishing
from Crosstowne Church - Sermons
Up until the 1500's, the common view of the universe was that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Along comes Nicolaus Copernicus, mathematician and astronomer, who formulates that Sun is the center of the known Universe and that the Earth and the other Planets revolved around it. Followed by Edwin Hubble and his renown telescope which showed that we're not only not the center of our solar system, our solar system is not even the center of our galaxy. Carl Sagan then writes book entitled Pale Blue Dot based upon a Hubble Telescope image of Earth taken Feb. 14, 1990, by NASA’s Voyager 1 at a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers) from the Sun, which leads us all to the face that Earth is not the center of the universe, and that, as observers, we don't occupy a special place. But it turns out, there is something better than being the center of the universe, and that's being a place where LIFE HAPPENS. Because in actuality, there are an astronomical number of things that had to be just right for any kind of life to happen on Earth. Clear atmosphere. The moon being just the right size and distance. Our position in the galaxy. The mass and composition of the sun. The habitable zone we occupy. Oxygen in appropriate the range. The internal heating of the planet. Plate tectonics to make magnetic field possible. A magnetic field to shield from charged particle radiation. Moderate axis tilt and the right size moon to maintain the tilt. Just to name a few. Because ultimately, it is not your position on the earth that defines you. It is your position in Christ that not only defines you, but also brings flourishing. Thanks for joining us today!
