Undersheriff Resigns Amid Confidential Reasons | Spokane News

Kootenai County’s Undersheriff Brett Nelson has stepped down after six years with the Sheriff’s Office, following a 34-year law enforcement career that included retiring from the Santa Ana Police Department in 2020. Appointed undersheriff in May 2022, Nelson submitted his resignation effective immediately — the reason remains confidential. In his farewell email, he thanked colleagues and pledged continued support. Captain Kevin Smart, a 30-year veteran of the department who started as a detention deputy in 1997, is now serving as acting undersheriff, bringing decades of leadership experience to the role.
